My understanding is "Certified Refurbished" don't have scratches. that would fall under "Scratch and Dent" I would presume.

Well, that's not necessarily true. Here's Dell's description:
    ***
Certified Refurbished: These systems are put through the production process again to ensure they meet all original factory specifications. We also retest each system to ensure excellent quality and workmanship standards. Certified Refurbished systems may have observable cosmetic imperfections, but they will not affect performance. Certified Refurbished Electronics & Accessories are visually inspected and, if necessary, retested to ensure these items function as well as new items.
    ***
I would think that a light scratch can be interpreted as "observable cosmetic imperfection".

I see that now. Hate to spend 900 bucks for a laptop with scratches. Its a crap shoot I guess.

No, it's not. You have great odds of finding a virtually new one. Every one I bought worked out great. The only problem I had was that on the XPS M1330 the keyboard was not flat. They overnight expressed a new keyboard to me, and that took care of it. And you can always return it if you don't like it.

    dakicka,
Wondering if you made a decision about whether or not to exchange? Are you enjoying it now that you have had more time with it. I am looking at the same model and am undecided about the graphics card and LED upgrades. Thanks.

Update, after returning my first one (problem they offered to fix, but decided to return it anyway) I reordered the latitude E6400. I really liked the laptop and in my shopping recently have not found anything I like better.

I did order a little different setup this time. I got one with a 128gb solid slate drive, 4 GB of ram and the NVidia Quadro 160. I only spent about $150 more and the SSD alone is a $200 upgrade.

I also decided I wanted the better graphics card even though it will lower the battery life an hour to 90 minutes. I considered the Lenovo t400 because it had switchable graphics and that's my one main complaint about the Dell. Still, my friend's new model lenovos they have at work break all the time while their dells have much fewer problems. And since Dell has a better warranty/return policy, I feel more comfortable reordering that one. Hopefully this one will work well and I can finally have my laptop :).
