SMBus Controller is the Intel Chipset drivers. For some reason, the first time around it didn't install. Now to figure out the Broadcom USH.

EDIT: Broadcom USH is the Dell Control Point Security driver under the Application section of Dell's website. Turns out to be some Security Vault thing that has to do with the fingerprint scanner. I don't have the scanner, but evidently it is still needed.

Any idea, why on Earth is the driver for NVS 160m not working under Vista 64bit?

Did you make sure you downloaded, and are using, the 64-bit driver and not the 32-bit driver? Have had no problem with the stock Dell 64-bit driver...

If you are using that, what is the problem (ie: more detail, what is happening)

This may not apply to you, but I was getting that exact error message and the message "Device Closed" when I tried to use my fingerprint reader. I called Dell Tech support and they were sending me a new fingerprint reader.

After more research, I figured out that the "Dell Extended Battery Life Settings" turned off the security devices, which one of the is the fingerprint reader. The application didn't turn it back on, even though the check box for the security devices wasn't checked.

What I did to fix my issue.

Go to Dell ControlPoint Power Manager
    Click on Battery Status
Click on "Settings" button next to Configure Advanced Battery Life Settings
Check "Power down security devices", click apply, uncheck, hit apply

My fingerprint reader started working again.

I have been trolling this site for a few years. I find it very useful, especially when dealing with brand new model laptops.

I have a question I am hoping I can get some advice about. We purchased a total of 26 E4300 and E6400's (yup, took the plunge due to how our budget revolves around the fiscal year). For the past several years, we have deployed our desktops and laptops using Ghost and a Universal Imaging utility. This way, we only had to maintain 2 images for all our Dell laptops and desktops (one for laptops and one for desktops). This provides for less overhead in maintaining multiple images and ensures that our images are consistent. I should add that we still use XP.

The individual who builds our image has had issues with these new laptops and our universal image software. He is close to resolving the driver issues, but some of the utilities seem to be impossible to include on our universal image. They include the Dell Control Point, Dell Quickset, Roxio Creator, Intel Matrix Storage Manager, and Netwaiting. So at this point, we are essentially left with 2 options... create separate images for each of our new model laptops or install some of these applications/utilities after laying down a generic universal image.

So, my question is, how vital (or how trivial) are each of the utilities I mentioned above. Perhaps we can get away with installing none or just some of them depending on the amount of utility they provide and if XP does not provide the same utility inherently.

    Thanks!

ControlPoint you need if you are using the security features of the laptop, and to get on screen indicators for screen brightness, volume, etc. It is also used to enable special power saving settings such as turning off the optical drive, firewire ports and expresscard to save battery.

You need the Intel Matrix Storage Manager. Try and see if it is easier to work with the generic Intel ones here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2991&lang=eng

Netwaiting is for dial-up I believe, I don't have it as I don't have a 56k modem in my machine.

Roxio is for burning CDs and DVDs, you can still burn CD's in XP without it, but you will not be able to copy and disks or burn DVD's.

Dell Quickset is the older version of what is now ControlPoint. You don't need it.

I use the Vista HD audio driver. It really improved the sound output of the internal speakers. Problem is, I'd like to use those speakers to watch some movies occasionally. But they still crackle from time to time during movie playback.
Is there any way to suppress this?
