    hi guys!
first of all i should apologize for my English, its rusty...

I bought the E6400 with the 1280*800 LED display...
Ive tried to tune everything i know and without success

the display is quite dark and the color contrast sucks.

    is that a known problem?

is there anything i can do?

    10x guys!

It's weird that you complain that the display is dark. The most typical complaint with LED screens is that it is too light, i.e., that colors are washed out.

If you have the Nvidia GPU, have you tried going to the Nvidia Control Panel (you can access it with Start --> Control Panel) and changing the color calibration, brightness etc?

Now that is weird. I have had the same problem on a CCFL (i.e., non-LED) screen in the past.

Try this: get a lamp, preferably a strong lamp, and point the light directly at the screen. Does that help it get lighter? If yes, it seems your backlight has a problem.

If not, post back here and we'll see what we can do :)

Also, you can call Dell right away: if we cannot fix your problem with simple things, that way they will go to your house already tomorrow. If you want to call tomorrow, they will only go on Monday...

It should do, it's reasonably strong.

By the way, some background: when I had the backlight problem on my old Fujitsu S6120, I had connected the cable that gives power to the backlight poorly so it didn't connect, and the backlight was off. When you shine a strong light on the screen, part of the light is reflected back to you, so it's some sort of replacement for a backlight. Of course it's not practical to do any work, but it's good for testing whether the problem is the backlight or the screen.

Hmmm OK. I suppose you have tried adjusting the screen brightness with Fn + Up Arrow / Down Arrow.

Have you tried disabling / enabling the ambient light sensor (Fn + Left Arrow)?

The other thing that comes to my mind is connecting the laptop to an external screen and see what you think of the image quality there.
