Sorry to bump an old thread, but does anyone have GPS working without a SIM card installed? Mine works fine when I pulled the SIM out of my USBConnect 881 and installed it in my E4200, but as soon as I pulled it the GPS refused to activate inside the Ericsson software.

EDIT: If it doesn't work without a SIM, does anyone know if I can just install an unactivated SIM? My card shipped with one.

Because I was going to sell the card to a friend if I didn't need it. I know someone looking for a new 3G SIM.

Anyway, I'm starting to wonder if there isn't something wrong with my card anyway. I put the active SIM back in there and COM7 lit up but I can't get a lock on any satellites.

For those that have this working, how sensitive is it? It's raining now so I can't go outside, but I tried sticking the notebook on the window sill and it can't even find a single one. I'm getting 4 out of 5 bars on AT&T 3G (which is actually better than I get with the USB adapter) so that's working fine.

I just tried mine with no SIM card, and with an old de-activated Orange SIM card, in each case the SonyEricsson Wireless Manager refused to turn the GPS on, I rebooted the laptop between each swap of SIM cards.

This seems wrong, I remember reading before I purchased that the GPS would function without an active SIM, perhaps it does with the DCP software?

Anyway, I put my T-Mobile SIM back in and it is happily reading GPS signals.

BTW the level of 3G signal you receive is not related to the GPS signal, though GPS is likely to be worse indoors than 3G, mine is usually happy even a few feet from the nearest window, less happy if there are more than one floor above.

I tested it on the way home and it worked once I got outside. I guess that's the important part, but I'm really disappointed that the GPS functionality doesn't work without an active SIM installed...

EDIT: I'll try it with the DCP software tomorrow. I'm almost hoping it doesn't help; the size on that thing is just ridiculous.

    hi guys -

i've just installed the 5530 card into my dell e4200, mobile broadband works fine using dell UCM.

However GPS does not seem to accquire any lock on the satellites. Before i installed the Dell 5530 drivers, i installed the mentioned Ericsson R198215 drivers.

It however, as you can see from the screenshot, does not seem to detect the wwan card?

Anybody have any ideas on how i can get my GPS working, do i need to uninstall Dell UCM to get the Ericsson app to recognise the wwan card on my system?

p.s. also, any idea why my GPS port is COM14 and not COM6 like the poster before?
    Thanks.
