Thanks, I'll think about doing this. Does anyone know if Optimus is enabled by default or not? (I don't remember but I think it is enabled by default?)

I'm worried that if I reset the BIOS to default, if the problem remains and Optimus is disabled, I won't be able to get in to do what I need to do to have the system boot properly :-\.

Without any drivers the generic win driver should take over. On an M6600 - Optimus is enabled as the default in the BIOS.

Edit: Early on in the M6600 BIOS history - a BSOD would disable/uncheck Optimus on restart. Although generally doesn't happen with newer versions a bad enough video driver crash will still cause this.

I was more worried about changes to the disk options, I'm currently running on AHCI so if RAID was enabled it might break my boot, and if I couldn't see the BIOS to fix it, that would be a problem.

Anyway, I found that Optimus is enabled by default in the manual, so I did what you said with the battery and nothing happened. Still the same as before.

I realize you have to be cautious because of your advanced boot setup.

I think you could reset BIOS to default, save, put setting for AHCI enabled, save. Exit to restart. I do this for M6600 and AHCI.

If you still can't get it normal - backup data, remove and reinstall video drivers.

    Aaron,

Problem is, I'm in a situation where I can't get into the BIOS to see anything. :p
Though it should be fine if Optimus were enabled.

Anyway, I spoke with Dell pro support and we tried lots of things and couldn't get it to work. They're sending me a new motherboard tomorrow....

    That's the pits :(

Wonder if it was bumped during travels. That you can see the OS but nothing in BIOS is weird. Might want to check all the video connectors before swapping the MB.

We'll watch for your updates to this problem.

I know with win 7, if I have my computer in the dock and the lid close, I would see the dell logo on external monitors but with win 8, I do not see the dell logo on the external monitors. Under win 8 in the dock and the lid closed, the monitors are off until the windows 8 start screen comes up.

Not sure if this helps any, but figured I would pass it along.

New motherboard. Problem fixed. Not sure what was up with it, but, working now so I'm good. :p

New problem with new motherboard: Webcam doesn't work. Error showing in device manager --- "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". Suspecting that the cable just needs to be connected better --- will check on it.

    Aaron,

    Good to hear! :)

Sounds like you did the work yourself?

As for the Webcam error I'd not have a clue. Loose connector sounds about right though. Then again I thought that might've been your original problem.

I don't think I used my webcam more than twice the entire time I owned my HDX. Still, if you ordered it, you should expect it to work.

I did a couple of systems checks and the only thing that didn't work is an accelerometer driver that for some reason won't install? I'm not sure its something I need for my laptop to work properly, but again, on a new system you should expect everything to work without issue.
