Go to the Dell downloads and search for Win 8 X64 files for the generic M6700 rather than your own service tag. It's the Feature Enhancement pack, which is listed under System Utilities or something like that.

Download the "Dell feature enhancement pack" from the drivers section of the site, that's where the power plans come from.

1: Professionalism, it goes a long way in business meetings and an AW will never look professional. It might seem like something trivial, but it does matter to some. While you may not care if the consultant you hired has an AW or a Workstation, to some it will project the image that the consultant isn't serious if he uses a gaming laptop. It's an entirely emotional thing, but it still matters (even though imo it shouldn't), the image you project can sometimes be as important as the work you do.

4: It depends on the dGPU and the last time I checked when docked, the Precisions support 3 monitors + the internal when docked with a nVidia GPU if i recall correctly.

Add to that the option of a 10-bit RGBLED IPS display, not offered on the m17x, an encryption module and other security features that are useful for businesses (pretty much not needed for the consumers, granted)

The GPU is more than just the hardware, a Quadro or Firepro is ISV certified, a GTX or HD running the Quadro or Firepro drivers is not. Some CAD software vendors can outright refuse to give you support if you do not have a card that is certified compatible with their software.

You are comparing two laptops that are aimed towards completely different users, the m17x touts features that are wanted by gamers and the M6700 packs features that matter to the enterprise market, but not that much to consumers.

So far I have not had any problems. The Digital Persona FP software has many more features and is way better then the Broadcom front end software IMO. The web browser plugins work seamlessly with the FPR now. Scanning seems quicker too as before there was some lag between scanning and the system acknowledging it and doing the next action. I have the FIPS and not the swipe one

I have (had - I sold it) the M17x and M6600. I went with the M6600 for two major reasons, non-glossy IPS screen, and dock port. If Alienware ever comes out with both features (not likely), I would get the M18x for sure. I game on my M6600 docked to 2 24" monitors for 3-4 hrs straight sometime and it doesn't skip a beat. The only taxing programs I run are in Adobe Master suite. I agree on the professionalism point to some degree.

Allright I need some help here.

I placed my order and choose the second option, the 87WH/3-year warranty battery.

    • 9-cell (97Wh) Primary Lithium Ion Battery, (3.0Ah) ExpressCharge Capable [Included in Price]
    • 3 Year Warranty 9-cell (87WH) Primary Lithium Ion Battery [add $47.60]

The sales guy messed it up and ordered the 97WH battery.

When I brought this to his attention, he adjusted the order by adding a 3-year warranty to the 97WH battery. He says the 97WH is a quick charge & better battery, and that the 3-year warranty is attached to a lesser battery???

Truth or is he uninformed? Sounds logical, but...

I have no idea what the facts are here, but if the long life battery adds $47 to the bill that sounds like the better battery - unless the money goes towards honouring the longer warranty - but then why offer a longer warranty on an inferior product?

And FWIW my "long life" battery defaults to express charging in the BIOS, so it too is seemingly capable of being fast charged.

Yes, it's possible to get the extended warranty for the 97Wh battery, have a good look at your new configuration, it should be listed on there as a seperate option, or check the warranty options on your computer online, which you can check after you receive it.
