i have done 2D Autocad on dell precision NON-MOBILE workstations. never seen a precision laptop ( but i have M4700 on order ).

    i have a ~4 year old 13" macbook "pro" ( that i couldn't get Revit to run on ), a ~2 year old 27" imac, iPhone 4S and iPad 3.

i also have two windows boxes built from parts - an old one, and an ivy bridge 3770K one.

if you don't want to hijack your own thread we can talk about Apple in another thread ?

    wow this sucks ! @#$% ! on M4700 i don't have space for a 2.5" SSD.

i have a Crucial M4 on Sata2 in one windows box and Samsung 830 on SATA3 in another - the Sata3 box boots twice as fast. and now it looks like i will be back to Crucial M4 on Sata2 in M4700 ! ! !

when i was configuring M4700 it just said Sata3 for the Msata. there was no mention of Sata2 anywhere. that was really low of Dell ! iPad 4G LTE when sold in countries with only 3G cellular is sold as 3G not as 4G !

this really sucks. i dunno what they were thinking ...

where can i order a Samsung 256gb msata ? i will be ordering a 256gb msata within the next few days, but so far i only see Crucial. i believe Samsung to be better than Crucial based on Anandtech reviews and the fact that Apple uses Samsung.

You must be seeing Crucial on your order list?

The M6600 had a 128gb Samsung 820 series mSata. The M6700 has an 830 series Samsung mSata.

Looking at this review - Samsung PM830 SATA 3 256GB mSATA SSD Review - Ultrabooks To Gain Capacity and SATA 3 Speed - The SSD Review - it looks like the drive is a good bit faster in sequential reads, but the other measurements are closer between Sata2 and Sata3.

I also wonder if I could get better numbers if the drive I was testing was not half full.

yeah there are plenty of reviews for it ... but not a single result on google shopping.

at this point my advice would be to skip the M4700 and wait for lower end Quadros to appear on M6700 because this Sata2 msata business is a ripoff.

not only did they cripple the mSata but the 240W ac adapter on the M6700 appears to actually be thinner than the 180W ac adapter on the M4700.

basically my conclusion is that M4700 has been crippled on purpose to prevent it from cannabalizing M6700 sales.

this is a very sad state of affairs.

i already cancelled an in-production Alienware M17X before i ordered the M4700 ... i don't think they will want to cancel my in-production M4700 when it's due for delivery on the 20th ...

and i can't pitch an offer to them to upgrade to the M6700 because the low end Quadros won't arrive till the 21st ! HAHAHAHA ! damn ...

oh well, at least M4700 is cheaper ...

i think half full is fine as long as you just filled it up to half full, as opposed to filling it up to full and then making some space by deleting stuff.

of course if you were going to do some sort of definitive comparison ideally you would want to do apples to apples IMO.

i think it is *possible* that performance might begin to degrade as soon as you put the first fine on the disk depending on how pro-active the drive is in managing "garbage collection". if the drive is a workaholic maybe it starts compacting stuff right away even when the drive is 90% empty ?

on the other hand few people will be working on empty drives so 50% full is the more relevant scenario for real-world performance. if the drive is only fast when empty - who needs it ?

i intend to keep my SSDs half full. this way i hope to get at the same time good perfomance and good use out of them. my last windows computer that is fully loaded with software has 100 gigs used ( windows and programs only ) on the C drive SSD, out of 128 gigs, so since then i have moved to 256gig SSD for the C drive expecting to use about 100 - 150 gigs out of 256.

Many apologies. You are someone that will likely contribute a lot to these threads. Over the years so many people have dropped in and out of these forums. You are someone that does the kind of work that these workstations were built for. I am sorry I misread what you were saying.

Look inside the first picture, it's a Precision, at least a M6500 from that design, maybe more an M6600^^
(I don't understand why they change for a MacBook after^^)

    Edit: Or it's a M4X00 series^^
You can also look at the 360° view, with a Precision inside.

yeah i just noticed it - looks like a 15" precision when you look at the 360 degree view. even has graphics ports on the back.

it's 8 pounds however, so if you add another 8 lbs for M4700 and the AC adapter its already 16 lbs and some airlines have 15 lbs carry on limit ... otherwise it passes carry on regulations on dimensions.
