re: the docking station questions, does anyone have a monitor which supports USB-over-DisplayPort to see whether the machine passes the USB signal through the mini displayport AUX channel?

Hi everyone, I've been getting useful information reading through the 100+ pages of comments.

    I have one urgent question!

I have ordered the XPS 15 on Dec 27th and I am still waiting for it to arrive. But after placing the order, I discovered the M3800.

I am mainly in architecture, so I want to mainly use it for AutoCAD and Rhino 3D modeling/renderings. So, the Quadro GPU of the M3800 would better fit my use.

But in addition, I also do a lot of Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, Traktor DJing and Ableton Live music work. Will the M3800 be an allrounder as I expect the XPS 15 to be? If yes, I am planning on cancelling my order and getting the M3800 so that I can work on architecture, photos, videos and music composition on it.
Ah and from time to time, I casually play games such as LOL but gaming is not the focus here.

I can't make up my mind whether to just use the XPS 15 for the above mentioned purposes or to get the M3800 for better performances for architectural uses.

I'd appreciate any replies. Thanks all!

The XPS will probably be fine unless you will be dealing with very large or complex autocad files, or you think autocad will take up the vast majority of the time on this machine.

Either way, you'll probably be fine.

Biggest advantage of one or the other for you will be if you run into driver issues or instability in AutoCAD; K1100M in the M3800 has ISV-certified drivers available, 750M in the XPS 15 does not. I don't know Rhino3D but a quick look on their FAQs for Nvidia cards mentions the decidedly non-pro 9800 so you should be fine there. K1100M probably performs a little better for those, 750M a little better for games, but as alexhawker already said both should be fine for your needs unless you're really heavily dedicated to the architectural work.

Performance-wise, unless you're on a last generation (Ivy Bridge) high-end machine ("workstation" or not) already, either GPU will blow away pretty much any older machine, regardless of which workload or which GPU...

Other than the GPU they are essentially the same machine, and the price is also essentially the same.

Here are some pictures I took yesterday. The m3800 is compared to my samsung 870z5e, which has a lovely pva or maybe a pls-panel:

    Code:
    http://speedy.sh/5UWK8/iph.zip
Dell to the left, and Samsung to the right. Please notice that the color red is not 'orange' on the m3800, it is just that my 5s camera had, for some strange reason, a little trouble with focusing on the glossy display of the m3800. Also take a close look at the two pictures, IMG_0142 and IMG_0155. Is that 'light hole' normal?

I also did a video, but its too big to upload anywhere. I'll post that later
    Regards

No. If you are talking professional OpenGL applications, then the Quadros are not just "a little" faster. The difference is literally like night and day; it's the difference between "near-unusable slideshow" and "smooth as silk". If you are viewing and manipulating complex 3D assemblies in CAD/CAE apps, then a Quadro GPU is a must.
