New Dell strategy? New Precision models aren't directly retailing in Asia, Australia anymore. The American consumer is still king.

Just talked to a Dell rep about release date :

"Sorry but right now we still haven't got the motherboard and chipset orders from Intel so we can offer this model line, in fact all 4th gen models we currently carry are offered as a fixed build due to shortage of parts.
latest word from Intel is they will fulfill all backlog orders by the 1st or 2nd week of October, this is actually not just us here at Dell but other manufacturers as well."

so looks like about a month.

Interesting, so all these delays are from Intel? I wonder how far down the food chain Gigabyte will be from getting product? I'm guessing the bottom.

I still don't understand why Dell does not provide more info on the model. It would make easier for some of us that are hesitating between the M3800 and M4800. It is very tempting to just get a M4800 at this point but shedding 2 pounds on a lighter model could be nice. There is still some uncertainty on what the M3800 really is, concerning among others battery time/size, and configuration options. Even on the M4800 (sorry to digress here) most of the unavailable options have nothing to do with Intel shortage. Late October or even November for delivery is ok, it would be just nice not to be left in the dark. It is not like the MBPr where there is an existing model for which the manufacturer wants to protect its current sales.

What I really would like to know is simply how much the cheapest QHD+ equipped M3800 is going to cost. Namely if they're going to offer it for under $2K (or rather, they're not going to force me to pay for a 256GB SSD because they only want to compete directly with the rMBP and not offer something cheaper but different in costly areas like that).

You're adding complexity where none exists. If you like the rMBP then the you'll be interested in the M3800. If it helps use a car analogy: one is a compact the other a mid-size.

I doubt it. Its the Precision line, with premium feature like QHD+ screen, don'y think it will be anything south of 2000.

There have already been sites citing $1699 for the cheapest base model, which presumably is the 1920x1080 model. I'm just making the point that I'd like to see them offer a one-up model mostly identical to the base except for its inclusion of the line's primary selling point: the QHD+ display -- be it $100 or $200 extra, rather than forcing other upgrades on us too, driving up the cost of the cheapest QHD+ display model.

In other words, if the $1699 model is 1920x1080, i7-4702MQ, K1100M, 750GB HDD, 8GB Memory, I'd like to see Dell offer a $1799 or $1899 model that is 3200x1800, i7-4702MQ, K1100M, 750GB HDD, and 8GB of memory (or maybe small low cost changes like bumping the memory or HDD capacity) -- separate from a "fully loaded" model presumably exceeding $2K.

Is there anything special about QHD+? Or is it just better resolution?
