Dell Precision 7540 and 7740 Owner's Thread

The options on that panel depend on the Switchable Graphics option in the UEFI firmware settings. In other words, that option controls NVIDIA Optimus on this machine.

When it is OFF, the machine uses the NVIDIA GPU to render the display, and hence you'll see all the options in the NVIDIA control panel.

When it is ON, the machine renders the display using the Intel iGPU, and you'll see the display controls in the Intel control panel. I think Intel now calls it Graphics Command Center or something like that. The NVIDIA panel will only show the 3D graphics options, and even in there, some options would be neutered: you'll not be able to use Fast Sync, for instance.

 

Does anyone here own a Precision 7540 with the UHD display option? If so, could you tell me which panel it is, and the eDP cable's part number? Thanks so much.

 

If you have graphics switching enabled in the BIOS then the Intel GPU is driving the display. You need to use the Intel graphics control panel for this stuff.

This is an unfortunately common example of ODM cost-cutting. They get fans from different vendors. On these machines, I have seen Delta and an unbranded clone. I have found that the Deltas do have high-pitched bearing noise, but it's tolerable. The clones are really very bad and, in my opinion, not suitable for an office environment.

 

The track stick, track stick buttons, keys, and backlight, all connect to the system by separate ribbon cables. The connections can be inspected without removing the keyboard. Open the bottom cover and remove the battery (follow the service manual). Most likely the keyboard cable is not seated properly, or the connection is defective at the keyboard. In the latter case, it will have to be replaced.

 

Thanks for the replies. I've got the service call scheduled for Monday, so I'll let Dell figure out the keyboard issue. I really hate dealing with ribbon cables unless I have to, and of course the 7740 battery is connected with a ribbon cable. At this point, I feel that given the computer is new, Dell should fix it without me having to get too deep into the works. I would check the BIOS...but without a working keyboard, I can't get into the BIOS via the F2/F12 keys. I do have an outboard keyboard connected via USB, but it doesn't appear to be picked up by the computer until after the Dell splash screen.

My guess is that they just need to reconnect one of the cables. There's something like 3 or 4 cables coming off the keyboard, you've probably got some connected but some not.

I was surprised at the number of cables for the keyboard, I had assumed they'd implement it as a USB device (or builtin hub with multiple HID devices) with a single 4-pin cable. But no.

Please share stories of how it works out for you. And of whatever sanitary precautions they take to keep from spreading cooties, I'm quite curious how that works, now.

 

Do these 75xx and 77xx models allow the touchpad to be configured to use one-finger scrolling? Like the way you used to be able to touch the right-edge of the touchpad to scroll up & down on older laptops...

I have a disability that makes two-finger, etc, gestures impossible. Most touchpads in recent years - that I've tried, anyway - make things frustratingly difficult for me.

It uses the Windows Precision touchpad framework, so you configure it though the Windows settings app and the options would be the same as basically any other modern laptop. I'm not aware of a setting for one-finger scrolling.
