Dell Precision 7540 and 7740 Owner's Thread

I ran it in docked mode using the 240W adapter and Monitors@Home

 

60% more cores than an RTX 3000, but barely 2000 points better in Fire Strike Graphics—that 80W power limit is really doing a number on the performance of the RTX 5000.

Next step is for some guinea pig to try flashing the 7740 RTX 5000 vBIOS which should raise the power limit to 110W, and see how that goes...

I am wondering why the GPU usage never hit 100%, only some to max 40% , but nost of the time just 15%.


Laptop is running without Throttlestop with Dell's preconfigured Windows

 

Maybe thermal throttling? You can see in my Timespy, on the last test temps get up to 100C and GPU drops significantly. On the other tests temps are around 74C and usage is 100%.

Here is Cinebench result using Dell preconfigured Windows and in 'Ultra Performance' for Precision 7540 Xeon E-2886M:

 

Have GPU-Z open while your benchmark is running. On the "Sensors" tab, there is a reading for "PerfCap Reason". It might give you insight as to why the card isn't running at max speed. (Power or thermal throttling will be reported there.)

I suspect that it will be power throttling a lot of the time. We know that this chip would like to draw a lot more than 80W. (It is used in desktop cards that draw over 200W.)

 

URGENT HELP NEEDED!! Hi folks. I upgraded my 7540 to BIOS version 1.7. Now my TB18DC dock has stopped working. It does not charge the laptop or do any thing at all now, as if it is not receiving power (which I have checked it is receiving).

I had the dock connected to the laptop when updating the BIOS. The lid was closed and display was available through the dock. The dock has stopped working ever since BIOS update was on to flashing new USB PD firmware.

Dock is integral to my work flow. Any help would be deeply appreciated...

Also, as an additional issue, my laptop is not going below 22W of power usage even when idle. Earlier it did sub 10W. I dont know what is wrong??

 

If it is urgent you should really call Dell support. (If you have ProSupport you should get someone local.) You can try rolling the BIOS back to the previous version but this does not always roll back all components.
