Dell Precision 7540 and 7740 Owner's Thread

did anyone get windows 10 1909 yet on their laptops?

 

I am fine with the price. Let's see what Dell can offer.

I have not. To be clear, it's not being offered when I check for updates.

I'm not in a particular hurry for it, and I've got enough other stuff going on that I can't really take the time right now to re-image the laptop from scratch although I'm sure I would be happier if I did. But I just did an online chat with Dell support while watching the Ravens thrash the Rams...at first the Dell support persons said that I should call Microsoft. I quoted them Microsoft's blog entry about

So they said that they would escalate my issue and get back to me within 48 hours. We'll see. In the meantime I decided to come here to see if anybody else had this

Hi, mine just arrived today and i'm having issues booting USB UEFI OS installer (windows or linux). tried 4 different USBs in both ports but the boot option for usb never shows up.
USB Boot is enabled and Secure Boot is disabled.
Any1 else had issues getting the laptop to boot from USB?

Ok figured out the issue... when creating the Bootable USB in Rufus it seems that the Precision 7540 doesn't like GPT, once i switched to MBR it booted right up... weird, none of the Dell/Alienware machines i had (1st to 6th gen) had this problem...

So you got the full 4x16gb sticks working?
I have exact same ram and i have problems booting the laptop with 4 sticks, doesnt matter which sticks are in, all work in a 3x16gb config, but as soon as any of the remaining sticks is added the laptop most of the time just greets me with 'invalid memory' led code

Edit: I've noticed that the rams are identical in everything except the memory chips... Could this be the problem, even though all are running at exact same settings?

So, I've been poking around the 51NB forums, and looks like someone's gotten their hands on a Quadro RTX 4000 DGFF:

If the card above truly is for the 7540, then there is little way of fitting it into the Precisions with the RTX 3000 and the P3200. I get a feeling the motherboard cutout has changed, too. Even the power connector is gone, and the screw holes are all different. Hmm.

 

I'm not sure what to make of this...

It is clearly a Dell card (JDGFF connectors), and a Quadro RTX 4000 at that (N19E-Q3-A1). I don't know what else it could be for, other than the Precision 7540.

The HDMI and DisplayPort connections are in the wrong place and in a different order. So they must have made a change to the chassis as well?
This also doesn't bode well for compatibility with future cards, for example whatever shows up in the Precision 7550. (I would think that they would update all of them to use this "new" form factor so that they don't have to have two different motherboard/chassis versions.)

I only just noticed this, too.

There's rumours at the Chinese forums that the form factor I posted actually is for the 7550. It makes absolutely no sense for Dell to churn out fourteen different types of motherboards for the two GPUs, given there are 7 choices for the soldered CPU (9400H, 9750H, 9850H, 9880H, 9980HK, 2276M, 2286M) and two different GPU form factors (RTX 3000 and below, and RTX 4000 and above).

If the RTX 5000 has got yet another form factor, that's twenty-one different motherboards, and three different chassis set-ups. It doesn't make logical sense, and yet I get the feeling that's what Dell has done, because there isn't enough space for 16 GB GDDR6 on the usual DGFF2.

Oh well, I shall know in a few weeks or so. I have forked out cash for the RTX 5000 DGFF2, and we'll see how it looks like. In the worst case, I shall ask for a refund, and I've saved everyone here the trouble.

Dell has actually replied with quotes (prices haven't changed), and I was about to prepare a set of Google forms and a Marketplace thread until I saw this. I guess I just saved about ten people from making expensive mistakes.

This appears like a hack-job—very reactionary, after they've seen Lenovo, Razer, Asus et al stuff RTX 5000s and 6000s into 15-16" machines.
