Trying to connect my 7540 (rtx 4000) to 4 external displays via WD19C dock. The dock has exactly 4 ports for monitors: 2 DP, 1 usb-C DP, 1 HDMI. Connected all 4 of them but hdmi monitor refuses to show with the message: no hdmi signal from your device. When I rebooted, the following message popped up (see attached screenshot):
"The hdmi port on your dock will not function when the adjacent displayport over usb-c is being utilized for video"
I have C states in bios disabled (if that matters anyway) and nvidia is set as default graphics card

The USB-C display output uses the same lanes as the HDMI port. You can only use one of the two at a time for video output.

I bought 4 sticks of 32GB Samsung memory and everything is working flawlessly. Ideally, I wanted to get ECC 32GB sticks (I have Xeon processor) but those have been out of stock for a while now.

Great, Samsung is good brand too. Thank you for your input

I have another 7740 with Xeon and ECC memory, I am actually wondering if I should stick to ECC memory (that needs Xeon). I use the laptops for complex calculations (math and finance) where data loss should be minimized.

    Hi all,

I was planning on purchasing the 7540. The configuration I was budgeting towards is an i9 9880H, 8GB RAM, 500 GB HDD and the T2000 GPU. Budget is tight. Upgrading after few months of use will help spread the cost.

Had a few questions, which after reading ALL 103 pages, got most of my answers. Points of my interest in the forum were in the following:

    #333- undervolting

#615- undervolting and keeping things cooler

#631- eGPU since I may be underwhelmed by the onboard T2000

    #751- Heat and power correlation

    #845- worth revisiting

    #891- Windows Advanced Power Options

    #1011- Some of my questions

    #1012- And the answers

I do plan to upgrade to Crucial RAM, Samsung SSD.

I do use my M6700 as the daily horse as an interior designer, I use Rhino and VRay, Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom (would like to learn video editing someday). I have relied on the CPU alone all this while. The K4000m in the M6700 doesn’t get used much.

    1) My question to the CAD and 2D designers here, how bad can the T2000 get?

    2) Anyone using it with the new 7000 series?

    3) Is it possible to upgrade to the RTX3000 by purchasing it afterwards? How does the stock 180W PSU hold up to that? Heat pipes and all that.

I have read through several sites, YT videos of VRay and came across ONLY good stuff about getting a better GPU will be better creating the WOW factor, but when I read through the comments in reply sections, many have been irritated at GPU rendering.

    4) How has the experience been among the daily CAD users like yourself?

The 7550 is going to be launched soon. I am going to wait and see what’s out there before pulling the trigger on the 7540. I have been reading through: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/precision-7750-7550-release-date.831922/page-9

Yes you can upgrade the GPU, but you will more than likely not be able to purchase it from Dell. You'll have to find a third-party source (eBay, etc.) and the cards tend to be pretty expensive.

Pop by this post I wrote; if you're going to upgrade from the T2000, you'll need a new heatsink, too.

If you're getting the T2000 and want to upgrade, lucky for you; I have a spare RTX 3000 I'm selling :)

As for the 180 W adaptor, the 7540 is now offered with even an RTX 5000 (which I've got in my 7530), but the power draw is capped at 80 W (versus 265 W for the desktop GPU), so you'll see performance roughly on par with a desktop RTX 2060 SUPER or so, and the 180 W adaptor has no real problem. I do see slight drain from the battery, though, and I do plan to upgrade to the 240 W adaptor once I shunt-mod or VBIOS-mod my RTX 5000.

    Man, you guys are resourceful!!!
When I go through the dell page for the RTX 3000, I am prompted with a message : The 4-cell 64Wh battery is not compatible with the NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 Graphics Card. And asks me to go for the 6 cell battery instead. Would I still need a larger battery if I plan to stay plugged to the wall during heavy rendering?

You could probably get away without the larger battery but it would be an unsupported configuration. No telling what would happen if for whatever reason the RTX GPU wanted to draw more power while you were running on battery power. Ideally, it would just power throttle the CPU and GPU, but this isn't something that Dell tests for or expects you to do so it could cause system instability. I haven't heard any stories from someone who has tried it.
