    Hi All!

I recently purchased a Dell Precision Workstation M5520. The machine has an i7-7820HQ processor, 32GB RAM, Nvidia M1200 Quadro, and an PCIe 512 GB SSD drive, and Windows 10. I noticed slow performance on the machine and decided to run some CPU benchmark tests - PassMark, GeekBench. My scores are dismal (~2500 on PassMark). I decided to complete a couple of steps and rerun the test:

    1. Updated CPU BIOS and disabled Intel SideStep
    2. Complete factory reset of the OS - no data or applications installed
    3. Set Windows Power Options to "High Power"
    4. Tests were run with a/c power connected

Same results on the CPU. In fact, as I am typing this message - I notice a significant lag between when I type information on the keyboard and when it registers on the screen. A significant lag. Any ideas on what may be happening?

    Thanks!!

Intel SpeedStep should be enabled or the CPU speed will be throttled. What do you mean by "updated CPU"?

Is the same typing lag noticed in other applications such as notepad or Microsoft Word?

Oops.. not sure what I was trying to say by "updated CPU"! Doesn't make any sense - does it? I guess I meant to say updated the BIOS and disabled SideStep.

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that SideStep throttles the CPU to reduce power consumption. I am not too concerned about battery life at this point. See http://www.tomshardware.com/answers...ntel-speedstep-technology-cpu-throttling.html. I do not notice the typing lag in notepad - however, I do notice it in other software like PgAdmin 4, pyCharm, or ArcGIS.

In any case, I tried re-running the benchmark tests after turning SideStep back on and the results are basically the same.

    Thanks!

Have you already tried installing the latest drivers installed for the Intel chipset, Intel GPU and the SSD?

Thanks. Yes, all updated. I have Dell Command Update - that continually updates drivers and the BIOS. I am in touch with Dell but they have not made any headway yet. My HDD throughput is great. Can't quite figure out where the bottleneck is!

I've never trusted commend update (or any driver update/recommendation tool).

Thanks. I did check the chipset driver version number between what was installed and what was available on the Dell website and they were consistent. I did not check the others. In fact, I installed Ubuntu 17.04 and have the same results on Geekbench. I think I have exhausted all software/driver issues. It is probably a hardware issue. I am hoping to hear back from Dell today - they are investigating the issue. I'll update the thread.

What score are you getting in FireStrike Standard? In comparison same spec but with Xeon I get 4125 (Graphics 4415 134mhz overclock - Physics 11207).

I would run HWiNFO, which has a very useful dynamic CPU speed indicator, and then run wPrime in order to ensure that the CPU speed is varying over the expected range with the expected number of threads (you can change the thread count in wPrime). I would also set the power plan to Balanced as the system is able to change its speed in microseconds to suit demand.

If the above shows that the CPU performance is fine then the bottleneck is elsewhere in the system.

Did you ever figure out what the issue was? Thanks.
