Battery saving mode is now constantly on. This mode used to be only on when the battery was at 20% or less. What is going on? I cannot turn this battery saving mode off. Once i try this and i close the battery screen (from the Windows icon on the task bar) and then reopen it again the settings are still on battery saving.

I have the battery setting at the recommended setting in Dell Command Power Manager. Should i change this to standard? EDIT: this does not change the battery saving state.

The reason i post this issue is that the downloading of an Windows update was interrupted because the battery saving mode is enabled. I like to see the machine working as normal as possible so i don`t have to worry about things like Windows updates which are failing now.

I also resetted the Dell power plan settings to its default values.

Also i cannot fix this in the battery screen of Windows settings. I also checked the Nvidia and Intel settings.

EDIT: i did a restart yesterday and the issue is no longer there. I noticed this issue initially after i had recharged the battery a while back.

I'm now the proud owner of a 5510, mostly love it. Don't like 2 USBs, keyboard is just ok, and unfortunately I got the i5-6300HQ processor, but I got it for $350 in perfect condition off craigslist lol. Screen is amazing, Nvidia M1000M plays games very well, etc.

I DO have a question tho.

Has anyone put DDR4 2400mhz RAM in without a prob ?

Dell says it supports up to 2133mhz RAM

    Thanks

Welcome to the family, that is indeed an amazing price if it is actually in a good shape.

I am not sure about your particular CPU but I have the model with the Intel Xeon (e3-1505m v5) and I installed the 2666MHz G.SKILL Rupjaws on it early on and it worked just fine at 2667 Mhz since. I checked the Intel ARK page for your CPU and mine to see if there is any indication that it might not work but I couldn't find anything. That being said, it might not work for some reason unknown to me, so keep that in mind.

    Cheers.

I don't have the answer but you could check the RAM manufacturers' compatibility tables. The other place to look is in the XPS15 9550 forum as XPS users tend to try anything which might give a performance uplift.

I would also note that you need to check the RAM timings to see if the higher frequency RAM will actually be significantly faster as sometimes they come with higher timings. Conversely, if the computer decides to run 2400MHz RAM at 2133MHz then the timings may be lower than normal 2133MHz RAM which will give a small improvement in performance.

If you've got 2400MHz RAM then try it but I wouldn't specifically buy it. I'm a believer in more RAM will provide better benefit than slightly faster RAM.

Thanks for the welcome and info. I actually checked the Intel ark page for my cpu and it shows support up to 2133 ddr4. I can get ddr4 2400 a bit cheaper than 2133 but think i will play it safe and get the 2133.

I will read through this entire thread when i have time but for now if anyone can share their positive and not so positive experience with M.2 SSDs in this model it would be greatly appreciated.

I read somewhere Dell units have had issues and bsods with some M.2 SSDs.

I'm looking to see what works with no issues. Thanks

We have some 5510's in the office. They will BSOD with the stock Samsung NVMe drive if the Microsoft NVMe driver is used. They work fine if the Samsung NVMe driver is used, or if the Intel RST driver is used (if RAID is turned on). I think that RAID is turned on by default, so you shouldn't notice this with a factory image? (Just switching the SATA mode in the BIOS to "RAID" is sufficient, you don't have to actually create a RAID array.) Also, I'm not sure if Microsoft has updated their driver and fixed the problem, it's been a couple of years since I messed with this. This issue was widely reported with this model when it was new and it also affects the corresponding generation of XPS 15.
