had 2 ram modules-haven't run any benchmark tests but as of updating the memory,i am quite happy with the performance.

One side question,John-since i got the Dell 2716 USharp display, the precision is lit closed. After rendering i noticed it was running a bit hot-hence my question.Do you think there might be a problem for the precision display because of the heat emitted by the laptop?Might sound stupid but when i opened the laptop the display was a bit hot.

    thanx in advance,
    bests,
    Ronnie

I think LCD techology is reasonably heat tolerant. Sensibly, Dell will have tested the notebook for this operating situation. Have you any idea how hot is your "bit hot"? Was it too hot to keep your fingers on? This issue was discussed a few months ago - see here and the next few posts.

I wonder whether the cooling with lid closed would be improved if the computer is on a cooling pad which blow cool air against the bottom of the computer. They are not very expensive and any reduction in temperature is good.

    Hi all,

I have the 56wh version with 2.5" bay. Is it possible to replace the battery with 84wh version by removing the 2.5" bay?

    Thank you...

Yes. Do you currently have anything in the 2.5" bay?

The difficult part is to find the 84Whr battery. Note that it is the same battery as in the XPS15 9550 which is much more common. You might need to also find two or three M2x4 screws unless this size of screw is also used for the 2.5" drive retaining plate.

No currently it is empty. I already found one on ebay. I think I can get one in January, I'll post the results here.

    Hi everyone,

I am about to get the Precision 5510 with Linux preinstalled (which is substantially cheaper).
Do I have any drawbacks when I install my own Windows license?
For example will the function keys for display brightness work with a non-dell Windows license?

    Thanks and regards
    Tobi

You can have a fully functional machine with your own Windows license. Function keys work properly. Very little software from Dell is needed, most drivers will come down automatically from Windows Update (if you are using Windows 10). Do make sure to pick up the latest BIOS update and also the Thunderbolt driver and firmware update from Dell.

For those wondering what any 5510 replacement might look like, see the info about the XPS15 9560.

    thanx for your answer,John.

I wouldn't say it's too hot but was just wondering if there might be any harm to the display. As you said they've probably tested that already and also the 4k display has the glass protection as well. What i do now just for some extra protection is inserting heat resistant fiber cloth between the display and the keyboard. After rendering some heavy scenes i checked the overall heating and it was totally ok.
