The reason why multitasking is so slow is probably because of the amount of your memory. I believe if you were to increase the amount of RAM you had and not upgrade the CPU, I honestly believe that you would see a greater increase in performance. 512 MB is not nearly enough for many of today's applications, even for Windows XP. Currently, your operating system must have a pretty large page file on disk that constantly swaps between disk and memory. As you know, the disk is much slower than the RAM, so swapping the page file and memory is a relatively slow process. By increasing the amount of RAM in your computer, you would see better performance in multitasking since more programs can be held in the memory at one time without spilling over to the hard drive's swap file for more space.

You can upgrade to any of these processors:

    Pentium 4-M 1.9 1900 512 400
    Pentium 4-M 2.0 2000 512 400
    Pentium 4-M 2.1 2100 512 400
    Pentium 4-M 2.2 2200 512 400
    Pentium 4-M 2.3 2300 512 400
    Pentium 4-M 2.4 2400 512 400
    Pentium 4-M 2.5 2500 512 400
    Pentium 4-M 2.6 2600 512 400

The fastest processor here, the 2.6GHz chip (SL6WZ), is about $50 on eBay and it may actually give you a small, but noticeable performance boost. The upgrade in memory will probably help more, though.

All of these will work, but only you can determine which one is "best". The 2.6GHz chip might be the fastest, but maybe $50 is too much for you. The 2.5GHz chip will give you a bit less performance, but may be a bit cheap and so on and so forth.

Nope. The C640 doesn't support 533MHz FSB processors. Like I said, those eight are the only processors to which you can upgrade. There ARE other processors that will WORK, but they are either slower Pentium 4-M or Celerons.
