At the risk of resuscitating this long-dead thread, (I'm not sure if this merits a new thread, after all, it's still the Latitude D830 we're talking about), I was wondering if anyone of you are running the latest Windows 7 Beta 1 release. I still can't get Aero to work under x64 Ultimate. I've tried the 64-bit Vista nVidia drivers from the Dell support site, I've tried the WDDM Pre-Release 1.1 from Windows Update (as recommended by nVidia on their own website) and I've tried forceware from LaptopVideo2Go.

My Aero Graphics are 3.4 and Gaming Graphics are 5.1 under WEI, but for some reason I can't even get my desktop to switch to 32-bit color mode. Any help would be VERY much appreciated. =)

Everyone here still happy with their D830s? Mine's still going strong, and after the recent A15 BIOS update, seems to be handling itself a little better thermally.

I've had issue after issue with mine, actually. There's been no end of problems to it. I sent my system in for yet another string of checkups and diagnostics. The following parts have been replaced:

    1. Motherboard (and the processor, video card, etc.)
    2. HDD
    3. Optical Drive
    4. LCD (I'll explain below)
    5. Display Hinge

The problem with the display was that a few weeks before Christmas, I noticed that I wasn't quite getting the same level of brightness that I was used. Now I know that the backlight will eventually fade over time, but dropping to what seemed like around 80nits at max seemed kind of excessively low for a 3-year old laptop. Eventually, the backlight started flickering and then it eventually died out. It would flash in and out, and I could tell it was just the backlight because I could see faint movements on the screen when I switched on Flip3D, the simplest way to see if the display itself had gone dead or just the backlight. True enough, in the right light I could still see my desktop.

So I had all those replaced yet again (and asked them to replace the screws and display screw caps they seem to have misplaced the last time around) and my system is now - just under a week later - ready for pick up. I'm hoping this is the last time I have to get this fixed because it's really at its EOL for me - I might relegate it to a server function or something.

Oh, and I haven't upgraded to A15 yet, but as of my last check the laptop was still getting extremely hot.

Thankfully, Dell helped to sort out my many issues with the local ASP and, for my troubles, sent me a free replacement battery (mine had long since been unable to hold more than 20 minutes) and a 90W adapter. I'm very happy with the after-sales service and support Dell itself has been giving me (particulary the patience of their CSRs) but something really has to be done about their ASPs.

Wow, thats awful freefisheater... Its almost like your machine is cursed :(. Mine's taken a new HDD (original Hitachi crashed), and a new hinge (case ruptured from metal fatigue). And of course, a new battery.

Mine's a July, 2007 build. So not one of the very first, but certainly one of the early ones.

Hi I'm considering purchasing a refurbished D830 from DFS. At the moment none of the machines have an OS loaded. What sort of problems might I encounter if I purchase a retail Win XP Professional package? Will I have to download drivers from Dell anyway? What about Dell Diagnostic software? From what I've read (here) Dell loads diagnostic tools into a separate HDD partition...

    Thanks for any all information!

Me too. From DFS I cannot see the panel type. I want WSXGA+, not WXGA or WUXGA. All I see is the sku in the description. Please enlighten me how to shop DFS. Thx.

Just to bump this thread; still running mine and loving it. Latest Nvidia drivers just released for Win7 x64 for the Quadro 140M seem to be more stable than ever (no flash crashing so far!).

The E6520 would seem to be the logical successor to this laptop, but quite frankly, I was quite appalled to see what Dell is shipping as one of its flagship business laptops, and think that new keyboard just looks horrible.

Anyone other than me just going to hang onto their D830 for a few more years?

And, other than another D830, what would be a good replacement? I guess I could do an E6510, those are pretty cheap now. Really like the Sandy Bridge hardware (have it on my desktop now), but the E6520 :(.

I'm still having mine as a Windows XP (32-bit) development machine. Works like a charm and has approx. 30 days warranty left. I've got E4300 with SSD last year which I liked so much that I was finally turned away from good-ol' D830. Yet I'm going to keep it till I do stuff for Windows XP. :)
