Actually XGA 12.1" is more like 106dpi. WXGA on a 12.1" widescreen would be 125dpi, but mine isn't 16:10 aspect. Keep in mind that the D400 that I have came out long before your D420, and has a very different screen.

WXGA 14.1" is 107dpi and WXGA+ 14.1" is 120dpi. It makes sense if you think about it -- a 14.1" 16:10 is not much taller than a 12.1" 4:3, and at WXGA/XGA, they have 800 and 768 vertical pixels, respectively. WXGA+ is much finer than I'm used to, and I think I might like that. Still not sure.

Thanks for your advice though. I agree -- the M1330's resolution is a pretty good compromise. At 113dpi or so, it's right in between the D630 displays. I'd actually be shopping for an M1330 if it weren't for the relative price and other preferences.

    I have a hot problem :)

In power saving mode (idle) CPU temperature is ~55C, GPU: ~72C
In high performance mode when watching HDTV videos it jumps to: CPU: 80C, GPU: 93C.
    Fan is almost always on.

Should I get it checked? Or is this normal? :)

D630, T7300, Quadro nvs 135m, Vista SP1, forceware 174.31, Bios A09 (NO O.C., temperatures from Everest and ntune)

Does anyone know how I get the travel light module??

I'm about to buy one of these...but don't see it anywhere as an option.

It came standard with mine and was not listed as an option.

You can certainly get it over the phone.

    Hi,

I am an undergrad and my university recommends the D630. Can you give me the pros and cons of owing one.

    Thanks.

Cons: The D-series is about to be phased out in the next few months.

Also, while most laptops have a SD slot, no such thing exists on the D series.

Pros: Numerous, just read the rest of this thread. The big advantage, IMHO, is that the D630 is a business-class laptop, has a very rugged case, and since it was recommended by your university, many others (presumably) will own them. So if a part dies in the middle of the night when you're working on a paper, you can merely call up one of your classmates and borrow their laptop (just swap out the hard drive with 2 screws) with ease.

What can I say, I have a D830, and I'm going to be receiving a new D630 on Monday, so I'm pretty happy with them.

I was wondering if it is possible to change the wireless card in my D630 myself since I can not seem to get in touch with the person who made my order and no one else at dell seem to want to go in the system and simply add the Intel card instead of the default dell card. If this is possible, are there any sites I can get one from?

The cards themselves are a dime a dozen on eBay. To change the card, you'll have to remove the upper cover, pull 3 screws on the keyboard, lift the keyboard, and then the wireless slots are located on the lower left hand corner of the keyboard, underneath the ctrl, shift, and Z keys.

4965a/b/g/n's are ~$30-$40 on eBay. Good luck.

Okay. So I recieved my D630 in the mail yesterday.

I did not recieve a travel light module with it. How could I find one? Google search turned up empty.

I read this thread a while ago and some people were talking about fan issues. So far anyway, my fan seems to be constantly running almost. Is this bad? Anything I can do?
