    Alright, I ordered the QX9300 with 12MB L2. Its showing up as Q9300 which apparently has 6MB L2. Installed the Intel CPU Identification Utility, see the pics, what do you think?

    It's not reporting the cache from the cores? Look at the CPUID data, its got 2x 6MB of L2 cache anyway. So whats the story?? Open a can of Nerd Rage at Dell or is it picking nits?? WTH is going on?

    Q9300 = Desktop CPU = 2.5 Ghz 6mb l2 cache

    QX9300 = Mobile quad CPU = 2.53 Ghz. 12mb l2 cache.

    Seeing as to how the Covet doesn't support desktop CPUs in the first place, and that the other information reflects the QX9300, I'm going to go with Intel CPU utility identifying wrongly.

    Give CPU-Z a shot too.

    Look closer at the picture, it is 12MB (2 x 6MB). Each pair of cores is sharing two separate 6MB banks.

    The Intel chip can only report 5 digits and the QX9300 has 6 digits to report to the BIOS. This is a known Intel issue.

    I started this thread on the Dell forum, but they keep deleting my replies, so figured I would ask here. What is the difference between the Penryn and the Yorkfield CPU's? I have seen CPU-Z outputs for QX9300's with both code names - not sure if this is a version difference in CPU-Z or what. In any case, my "replacement" M6400 arrived today - and it too shows a Q9300. I spoke with a Dell tech support person and after several periods of being put on hold she said that it should show QX9300 - but this was clearly not first hand knowledge on her part.

    So my question - does anyone with a Quad ore QX9300 actuall show "QX9300" in BIOS or other identification tool - or are we 100% sure that the Q9300 is correct?

    Ya, I am paranoid - as 4 out of the last 5 laptops I have ordered from Dell have been shipped to me with lower spec parts then what I ordered - so based ONLY on my personal experience, Dell is out to screw you when they can. If this is right, then GREAT. It is a really hot laptop and I am pleased with it - just want to make sure I have what I paid for. I really appreciate your input.

    Chris
