If you want to install the IMSM drivers go to device manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI-controllers -> ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI controller....right-click and load drivers manually there, it should work just fine.

Which drivers are you trying to load btw, and what version of IMSM do you have installed? Are you trying to install just the drivers...if so the package you downloaded should only be a couple of 100kb large. If the file is larger it is not just the drivers but the software too. As far as i've found the drivers are not supplied without the software in the intel site. Only on the Dell site you can choose the driver as a package without the software.

Give us more details on which file/version etc. you're working with

xp doesn't support the intel matrix manager
you'll be experiencing a lot of blue screens and errors [on DCP] also

    transfer to vista OS

complete OS + service packs + windows update
    chipset driver
    other drivers

Ah...lol...should've mentioned that earlier dude! MDR8850 is right, you can , however, install the drivers through the way i mentioned earlier. This way you can set your SATA operation to AHCI (in the BIOS) This doesn't have that much benefit compared to "normal" ATA except for when you want to use the eSATA/USB port for an external eSATA device.

edit: MDR8850 isn't right at all....IMSM IS in fact compatible with XP...it's weird it didn't want to install but, mind answering the earlier questions? lol

Is it advisable to save the OS packs and updates until after the hardware devices/drivers are initially installed and working and recognized by the system?

The E6400 clean install reference in my sig may be a useful general starting point for re-installing XP on the subject system.

Note that on the E6400, the Dell IMSM driver-only does not auto-install... it must be installed via Device Manager update.

Assuming your BIOS is set for IRRT/RAID or AHCI, and you already have a version of the IMSM driver installed, I would download the latest IMSM driver ONLY for your OS from Dell, extract it, find the sata controller device in Device Manager, and update its driver there using the downloaded driver.
