As expected, the fan problems have returned with my 3rd Latitude:

    They wont do it.
Ive been trying to get that for the past six months so I can just buy another with the Intel and maybe a P version chip to minimize energy consumption/heat output.

Ive spent hrs on the phone with various reps and they cannot seem to get authorization to refund my money after 30 days.

I'd just like to post here to tell akwit and others with similar problems that I'm going for the same route: first ask for a replacement machine (I won't keep it unless it has better temperatures), and then ask for a refund.

    Will keep you posted...

And with summer approaching with the associated increase in ambient temperatures (for those without air conditioning) then general hardware temperatures will also increase and the noisy fan mode will cut in more often.

Can Dell fix the problem by adjusting the fan rules to raise some of the temperature thresholds. I would like to raise that 50C chipset temperature.

akwit, have you tried playing a game or something like that to see what temperatures you reach?

If you don't reach very high temperatures (over 100ºC), Dell might not want to do anything about it. It makes sense from Dell's point of view (why replace the thing now, they can just replace it if and when it fails), although it sucks for us users.

If you do get high temperatures and the GPU downclocks from the heat, then you do have a valid claim.

I dont play games, but I have reached the 70's just from a movie.
My fan seems to kick in at or about 45/46, but during the cool down process, will not shut off until it goes below 40.

I literally have a problem concentrating and/or working for long periods of time when the fan is going at high speed. If I have paperwork to do, I have gotten into the habit of hibernating during that period of time, just to get some peace and quiet.

I guess you already did that, but have you tried pressing Fn+z to reset the fans while they are cooling down?

I got them to allow me to return my Dell outlet unit after passing the 21 day return period...I just had one exchange, and talked to a rep along with a customer care rep and an escalations rep for a few hours. That netted them allowing me to return the unit in question without the re-stocking fee as well.

How long after the 21 day period and why did you return it?

It was about two and a half months total time wise since I ordered the unit. I returned the second one because the bottom chassis was bent. Also, my experience with Dell Support is up and down...sometimes I'd get a good rep who'd listen and follow everything I said. However, half the time I'd get a rep who'd listen and say he/she would pass it on and push the request through...but ended up not doing it until I called again to get another rep to follow through.

You might just have to keep trying.
