AMD RX560 MXM 3.1 card is on sale for $180 USD

Trust me, i've "dug after" those myself too, a few times, obviously to no avail. I didn't even consider checking the official channels, because i knew they'd be charging an arm and a d*ck...

It uses 45W...

RX560 uses 80W so I guess minimum 130W adapter would be necessary to run RX560 & CPU (45W). That's going to be lots of heat.

 

My m4800 came with an 180W one, so i'm not really worried there. I've actually browsed for 240W bricks for sale, but i'm not 100% sure that'd warrant the $50-odd investment. I'm actually still on the A06 bios, because they introduced that stupid "throttle if charger's under 180W" thing, which isn't too appealing for my 130W "travel adapter".

 

Yeah, I have 240W adapter as well. However I'm worried about heat problems.

A lot of people told me M4600 with i7 2960XM CPU has lots of heat. i7 2960XM CPU uses 55W. Only 10 more watts from ordinary i7 CPU (45W) could generate much heat that can disturb users.

In our case, we're going from m5100's 45W to 80W so I guess laptop can run pretty hot.
I think buying RX560 with a USB laptop fan could solve that issue.

 

I have a DIY cooler i built with my dad, a good few years ago - a laptop-sized piece of about 1/4"-thick plywood, and bolted onto the rear edge, this mains-powered nice and quiet crossblow fan (out of some old printer or copy-machine). As a side-effect, that also raises the rear of the laptop, so it brings the keyboard to a more comfy angle.

I "filled out" the edges with some duct-taped foam wedges, 'cause the airflow over my mouse-hand quickly became annoying, AND cold.

A guy on this forum is using 2GB version W5170m on M4600. 4GB version sounds enticing... although I don't know if HP card will work on dell. W5170 is an upgraded M5100... just a little better spec but 4GB makes it nicer.

 

Maybe, but 400$ for an extra 2gb of vram (which i'm not even sure i'd have any use for with this gpu) seems a bit steep.

The only "better spec" is the vram, otherwise it's the exact same thing.

W5170m is about 13% better than M5100.

So technically, W5170m is the best working card for M4600 so far... but it's too expensive for what it is honestly.

 

The difference comes from the +150-200MHz stock clocks the W5170M has - nothing a quick BIOS mod and overclocking can't fix (for free), so yeah - double not-worth-it.
