My scratch & dent Latitude has given me some trouble. First off either the LCD hinges are messed up or the chassis is bent. But either way, the thing is a piece of junk. Lock ups happen within 30 minutes of booting up, no matter what. The audio crackles. Not a big fan of the screen either.

So I called to tell them I'd like to return the laptop, and I was ready to do so until they gave me a great offer. They were going to allow me to exchange mine with a freshly built one... which would be:

    P9500
    Nvidia 160M
    1x2gb
    80gb 7200RPM with Free Fall
    LED WXGA+
    Bluetooth 370
    Base wireless
    Vista Business

for the outlet price that I paid, $850. Pricing it out, it would cost around $1,400 new with the discount.

BUT, I really don't want it. I've decided I want a Studio 17 with WUXGA instead. Someone talk me out of this!

You'll always feel like you picked "the best value" instead of what you want! You could take the exchange and then sell it...

Yup take the exchange and sell it. You should get a decent amount of cash out of it.

But I thought you weren't allowed to resell Dell stuff? They always make you check that little box that says the purchase isn't for resale. Also, how would the new owner get the warranty? If it's anything like the current Latitude I have, he/she will need it.

Plus I'd feel bad for reselling it... I like Dell as a company and don't wanna hurt them lol.

Get the one that will make you happy or you will end up regretting it as long as you own it.

Personally, I would take the exchange and keep it. The latitude is a better made machine than the Studio line. Of course, in my opinion!

    I agree with that 100%

I use the Latitude D430 on work and private and i am 95% satisfied.
my wife use it everywhere [about 14hours the day]
    - via docking station and dual monitor at the workplace
    - wireless [e-learning] in her leisure time [sometimes even on the beach]

only negative impression is the heat after intensive usage.
and with the U7600 processor i miss a little bit more speed sometimes [i know: i shouldn't use 3 windows of firefox plus outlook, Photoshop CS4 and usenext client] with windows vista ultimate and SP1

Ok, so I got the replacement. It actually ended up being a refurbished unit, with a 1x4gb (who orders that, honestly??), 250gb HD... but it had integrated video. Also, the screen was crappier than my first one, and for some reason the fan was always on. Definitely going to return it.

    hey gauden, couple of questions.....

did they talk you out of the replacement originally offered ? was it no longer available ? or what ??

did they send you the replacement before you sent back your original unit ?
    how did that work ?

i recently purchased a latitude thru the outlet and it has some issues, considering the return/exchange but kinda worried thanks

after returning two Latitudes because of warped screens and water marks I went looking at new Dells. the models offered with XP have a glossy screen (not a good choice for me) and are widescreen. so I'm going to try again for a refurbished since I like Windows XP and the Latitude line.
