Ok, So I've found the thread about IDE channels causing hardware interrupts and that you can uninstall them and reinstall them and have it install in Ultra DMA 5. Well I do that, and it seems to run in DMA 5 for a day or two then suddenly, it has reverted back to PIO mode and I'm getting massive lag when watching movies or playing games.

    What gives?

    Specs:
    Vostro 1700/Windows XP home(yea :( I know)
    8600M GT/2gigs ram/160gig HDD/Core 2 Duo 1.8ghz

    How can I fix this?
    Its getting very very annoying.

Download HD Tune and do a scan on your hard drive. Maybe your hard drive is deteriorating..

    Scanning it right now.
But the thing is, the HDD is running in Ultra DMA 5, the DVD drive is what continues to revert back to PIO mode.

Right.. when I saw primary channel I assumed it was the hard drive.

In that case, what's the model of your DVD drive?

This normally happens when there are disc reading problems. See Microsoft's explanation.

How recent is your version of XP?

Well, I refuse to go to SP3, but everything else is completely up to-date on it.

I'm going to DL this HotFix and see if it helps.

Ok so the hotfix won't install for some reason it says that it requires SP1 when it clearly says that its for SP2....

I suspect the problem would go away if you would be willing to share your computer with SP3.

Otherwise, you could call M$ and request the hotfix mentioned here (it's the included in SP3).
