iPhone X Flagship Is An Incredible Value At $999 Says Apple CEO Tim Cook
https://hothardware.com/news/iphone-x-as-an-incredible-value-at-999-says-apple-ceo-tim-cook
"Undeterred, Cook answered in typical Apple fashion and justified the high cost:
Well, it’s a value price actually for the technology that you’re getting. As it turns out, most people are paying for phones over long periods of time. And so, very few people will pay the full price of the phone initially. Also, most people actually trade in their current phone, and some carriers throw in subsidies and discounts.
When you look at it, the iPhone in particular has become so essential in our daily lives, people want it do more and more and more. So, we’ve built more and more technologies into it to be able to do that."
In other words, smartphones are an indispensable tool that have become interwoven into our everyday lives, and you have to pay to play. There's no question that the iPhone X is packed with some potent high-end hardware -- much of which we've seen in previous Android smartphones (wireless charging, edge-to-edge OLED display, facial recognition, etc.) -- but the sticker shock is still palpable.
The iPhone X is priced at $999 with 64GB of onboard storage. However, Apple will make available a 256GB version for a whopping $1,149. The flagship device will be available for preorder on October 27th and will ship on November 3rd.

It seems Apple needs to license MSFT's continuum for PC like experience when you are paying $999. Or at least dual boot with Windows 10 on iphone because its x64 based CPU and has lot of RAM and storage.
@hmscott Now laptop will be priced $9999 since its more value priced for a OEM rather than manufacturing $200-3000 lappie. -
Why should a phone need to run Windows 10 and have a PC dock just because it has tip-toed across the magic $1000 threshold (that both Apple and Samsung have been pretty close to for years now)?
I expect high-end scotch to taste better than plastic-bottle booze, but I don’t expect it to have specific features that the cheaper stuff lacks. I expect a $2,000 shotgun to give a better user experience than a $500 shotgun of the same genre (say, comparing a Beretta over-under to a Turkish-made over-under), but not have fundamentally different features. Why is the same concept so controversial with smartphones? You’re paying for a phone with nice components and a nice user experience, but it’s okay if it still just does the same objective tasks as cheaper phones instead of something revolutionarily different.hmscott likes this. -

I read somewhere that Apple doesn't even include a turbo charge block (or whatever fancy name Apple might give to it)
For that price it's the least the least they could do is include the block, which prolly costs $5 to manufacture... -
Apple is introducing fast charging for the iPhone X ... but you'll have to pay extra for it
http://mashable.com/2017/09/15/iphone-x-fast-charging-price/#TXSVwH532mqV
"The fine print regarding fast charging on Apple's tech specs page for the iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus, says the following: "Testing conducted by Apple in August 2017 using preproduction iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus units and software and accessory Apple USB-C Power Adapters (29W Model A1540, 61W Model A1718, 87W Model A1719)."
But the iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus don't come with USB-C Power Adapters. They come, according to Apple's tech specs, with a "USB Power Adapter" which likely means USB-A. So users will have to buy a separate adapter, and the cheapest USB-C Power Adapter Apple is selling — the 29W model — costs $49 in Apple Store.
Worse, you'll need a new cable, too. The new iPhones come with a "Lightning to USB Cable" adapter, but you'll need Apple's " USB-C to Lightning Cable" adapter, which starts from $25 in the Apple Store. "Last edited: Sep 26, 2017Vasudev and killkenny1 like this. -

Apple snaps their fingers, and their customers cluck like "chicken's", pull out their wallets, and get plucked.
The will of Apple is to maintain product profit margin's, and including a "free" charger isn't going to accomplish that for them.
With a minimum MSRP of $999 Apple can't include anything else without bumping the cost over $999.
That's why there's no finger print reader home button included eitherLast edited: Sep 26, 2017Vasudev likes this. -

The shotgun has had decades of time to be perfected, and there the price differential is justified with ornately artistic metal and wood work.
The smartphone is still in the functional / features improvement stage, and that's more than enough to bump the price up far enough that margins begin to suffer. You need to keep the price down, features up, and there's not much room for profit - normally.
The exhorbitant prices are hidden by monthly payments now and long term contracts before. Even Apple's CEO admits this. Steve Jobs and Apple perfected this scam.
Otherwise we'd still be using flip phonesVasudev likes this. -
Apple's new iPhones can fast-charge, if you have the right adapter
You can charge the battery on the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X to 50 percent in 30 minutes.
https://www.engadget.com/2017/09/13/iphone-fast-charge-requires-different-adapter/
Hmmm, Engadget says the charger+cable is $85...
"There's a catch, though. In order to make this work, you'll have to separately purchase Apple's (or a third party's) 29-watt USB-C charger and USB-C to lightning cable; neither will come packaged with the iPhone 8, 8 Plus or X. The charger will run you $49, while the separate cable is $35 at the Apple Store (sorry, the Apple town square). Not an insignificant chunk of change, to be sure."Starlight5 and Vasudev like this. -

All that money... for a smartphone can't even record a phone call natively, ffs!

For what you are getting over the 8 vs. X, I would get the 8. screen is not that great with the horns, and it just does not give a compelling choice vs the ip8.

Because I don't think that X gives anything more for the money than what you get with the 8. The "horns" are ugly, no...FUGLY....There is no more horsepower, You lose touch ID in favor of FaceID, and for 1000 on a new contract...NOPE. iPhone 8 it is!
-
In this photo they seem to go out of their way to not show the use of the notch, to hold the phone:
IDK, I don't like the cut out of video's, but I appreciate the hold point, which if I were holding a full edge to edge screen my thumb/hand would be obscuring that portion of the video too - if I could touch that screen without pausing the video.
It's going to take some getting used to, but I like the idea of a grab point on the phone

Actually, It’s for the facial recognition sensors. But either way, the x is not worth the money vs the 8.
-
Oddly enough facial recognition is the reason I wouldn't get the iphone X, losing the finger print unlock when Apple dropped the home button kills it for me.Vasudev likes this. -
Why buy 8 if you have the money for Iphone x ? Easier + you will probably get better price for the old one next time you switch phone.
People don't want 8. If they get the 7 cheaper they skip 8. Apple have already undestood this... Thats why they now stop selling the biggest version (storage) of Iphone 7.

Does Apple Think We’re Clowns?
Good luck getting the most expensive iPhone ever
https://medium.com/@twittner/does-apple-think-were-clowns-fe92375a9c64
"The hype around the iPhone’s 10th anniversary edition is especially intense this year. The cycle this time feels even more circus-like, if that’s possible, and I wonder whether the new Animoji feature of the $1,000+ iPhone X isn’t the only thing making me feel like a clown. (You, too, can be a talking poo!)
Start with the fact that Apple launched not one model, but two, with the first one, the $699 iPhone 8, being only a scant improvement over last year’siPhone 7. Though it’s been for sale in Apple stores since Sept. 22, the new model is languishing, according to researchers quoted by the Wall Street Journal: “Many consumers have decided the improvements in the iPhone 8 are too incremental to justify the higher price tag and instead opted to buy less costly, older models or wait for the iPhone X.” And among those who did buy one, a “boomlet” in iPhone 8 trade-ins has already begun."
Crazy new trend: Small boom in iPhone 8 trade-ins... already
It seems that some folks who bought iPhone 8 devices in the last month or so now want to trade up to the iPhone X. It's gonna cost them. Next time, we advise just thinking through your purchase before you buy.
http://www.zdnet.com/article/crazy-new-trend-small-boom-in-iphone-8-trade-ins-already/
"Sometimes you just gotta wonder. The iPhone 8 was announced at the same time as the iPhone X. You would assume that a buyer would spend a few moments deciding between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X, and then buy one or the other.
But, apparently, there's a bit of a boom in iPhone 8 purchasers (and, in this, I include 8 Plus) who, after merely a month, want to trade in their newly purchased phones for the iPhone X.
There are definitely differences between the two devices. As I wrote in my iPhone 8 vs. iPhone X article earlier in the week, the X is $200 to 300 more expensive. For that couple hundred bucks, you get a bigger screen in a smaller package and a much better selfie camera.
Of course, there's one other attribute of the iPhone X that may be worth the cost to some buyers: It's the new hotness. If you want to look cool and show your bling, the iPhone X is the first new iPhone in four years that doesn't look same ole same ole. It has that new phone smell."Last edited: Oct 29, 2017 -

"... According to Howley at Decluttr, they're offering up to $500 on the iPhone 8 and up to $630 on the iPhone 8 Plus, between now and Friday, when iPhone X pre-orders will be accepted by Apple.
If you do the math, that means that iPhone 8 and 8 Plus buyers who somehow didn't think things through and want to move to the iPhone X are going to take between a $300 to 350 hit (at best), on the money they already spent on their iPhone 8 devices, plus the $200 to 300 more it costs to buy the X itself.
All I can say is wow. Just wow." -

According to The Verge, FaceID works best from 10-20 inches from the face, with the phone pointed directly at your face (bringing the phone up to the face a good amount), and it can be confused by fluorescent lighting (i.e., most offices). Not good news for a system that's replacing a fingerprint sensor instead of supplementing it.

iOS 11.1 looks like it improved the battery life on iphone 7, but I will do some testing and keep everyone posted.
-
Apple has really and truly messed up the pooch this time, and my guess is everyone is going to end up running with long unlock times or completely disable that security measure and go back to PIN ID - that still works, right? -
-
-
The headphone jack is one thing - that's just another dongle. Stupid, but not dopey.
Replacing touchID with locking your eye's gaze on a device every time you want to use it is going to cause accidents, and not just driving, but everything that requires focus attention - the Eye gaze lock will interfere with all of what people do all the time.
Pretty soon people will be complaining of sore necks and backs, from the whiplash effect of zipping their focus back and forth between what they are doing and back and forth to unlock their screens.
It's a dopey ideaLast edited: Nov 1, 2017 -
