    "(Reuters) - Sprint Corp sued AT&T Inc late on Thursday, saying it was misleading consumers into believing that they were using fifth generation or 5G wireless network, a technology that has not yet been widely deployed.

    AT&T customers were seeing “5G E” logo on their mobile devices in over 400 markets. Even though users are still on 4G network, AT&T is calling it 5G Evolution, Sprint said in the lawsuit.

    5G can offer data speeds up to 50 or 100 times faster than 4G networks.

    Smartphones running on both Android and Apple’s iOS platforms are sporting “5G E” for AT&T customers, even though those phones are not equipped to support 5G.

    Sprint said that a survey showed 54 percent of AT&T’s consumers believed their “5G E” network is the same as or better than a 5G network and 43 percent said if they buy an AT&T phone today, it would be capable of running on 5G.

    “We will fight this lawsuit while continuing to deploy 5G Evolution in addition to standards-based mobile 5G. Customers want and deserve to know when they are getting better speeds,” AT&T said in response to the lawsuit.

    5G Evolution and the 5GE indicator let customers know when their device is in an area where speeds up to twice as fast as standard LTE are available, AT&T said.

    AT&T's Chief Executive Officer Randall Stephenson said in an interview here with CNBC that the company's customers are seeing an increase in speed and performance on the "5G E" network and this is a step required to get to "ultimate 5G".

    Last month, Sprint said it plans to release 5G smartphones with Samsung Electronics Co Ltd in the United States during the summer, while rival Verizon Communications Inc in December also disclosed similar plans for the first half of 2019."

    How Samsung is Bringing 5G to the World | Samsung 5G Base Stations & CPEs | Demo | Digit.in

    Samsung has shipped 36K+ base stations featuring next-generation 5G RF chipsets. Samsung says these chipsets reduce 5G base station size, weight and power consumption by 25%.
    These base stations feature a smaller DAFE along with smaller 28GHz & 39GHz RFA chips, and smaller RFB chipsets as well. Samsung has commercially deployed 5G in North America with Verizon and Sprint. In Korea, all the 3 main operators there have also rolled out 5G services with half the country covered already.

    In this video you will see both Below-6Ghz and Above-6Ghz Base Station offerings from Samsung.

    For the Below-6Ghz Multiuser MIMO 5G base station, speeds on 4 real 5G phones being shown in this demo were between 690 Mbps and 760 Mbps approximately with the base station clocking an approximate speed of 2.9 Gbps. India is considering making below-6Ghz 5G spectrum commercially available.

    You can also see a 64-bit base station that Sprint is using commercially currently in Chicago to provide 5G services. The 64-bit base station also allows the operator to allot half of the bandwidth to 4G and the other half to 5G devices. This is called LTE-NR Dual Mode Support.

    On display is also a 32-bit MIMO unit but for a higher 200Mhz bandwidth which is more powerful.

    For Base Stations above 6GHz, Samsung provides Multi Carrier Aggregation.

    Apart from the larger base stations, Samsung provides a number of smaller CPE's and other connectivity devices that allow 5G to be deployed commercially in all kinds of environments.

    Here's What An Autonomous 5G-enabled Smart Store & Smart Kiosk Will Do | Demo by Intel | Digit.in

    Here's what an autonomous smart store - basically a popup shop that's 5G enabled - will look like in the future according to Intel.
    The idea is to make a more frictionless experience possible for the consumer. To enter the retail space, you take your 5G enabled mobile phone, scan a QR code and you're in. Then you don't need to scan any of the items. Just pick up what you want and walk out. Whatever payment information you have saved in your profile will be automatically charged. You don't even need to take out your wallet from your pocket. So no lines, and it's super-easy for the consumer.

    For the retailer, the cost of operations may be lower since this could be a store without any staff. Intel says that technology is advanced enough that if you try stealing something by slipping it into your bag, it will be detected and you will be charged for that item.

    Intel does this by using AI and computer vision to track and assess both consumers in the store as well as the individual items on the shelves. They are not using RFID technology so moving products from one shelf to another won't result in you being accidentally charged. Only if you leave the store with the product will you get charged.

    5G will have the bandwidth and low latency to allow for such a popup store to be hosted virtually anywhere as long as there's signal strength there.

    For example, at music festivals, or conferences like MWC. Cloudpick, which is Intel's partner in this, already has 30 such autonomous stores in China.

    The other 5G enabled retail experience that Intel is showing is their Smart Kiosk. Again, the Smart Kiosk uses AI and computer vision to capture your profile and help cater it's in-store services to better suit you and your needs.

    So if you are frustrated for example, the Smart Kiosk would be able to read your expressions and alert someone in the store who may then be able to come and resolve your issue, before you erupt in the store!

    How 5G Will Improve Your Extended Reality (XR) Experience | Demo by Qualcomm | Digit.in

    Here's how Qualcomm will leverage 5G to create immersive, high-end Extended Reality (XR) or AR experiences. 5G's high bandwidth and low latency allows fast linking - edge computing via the cloud to take the computing load off the XR device.
    This demo uses a 5G base station that transmits the 5G signal via cable to a 5G phone that's a prototype used for testing. This phone then connects to a high-end headset with 2K displays and camera sensors.

    The headset doesn't do any computing but sends the data the sensors capture back to the phone which in turn, sends this data via 5G to a cloud server that actually does the high-end graphical rendering.

    Once the data is rendered and the images created, these are then sent back from the cloud server to the phone, which does some further processing and transmits the processed image into the headset.

    The final prototype would simply be a headset and a 5G phone. Then the network operators would offer VR as a service. This could also fit into an all-in-one form factor where the phone fits into the headset and acts as the display.

    Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP) Technology for 5G Spectrum Sharing | Demo by Qualcomm | Digit.in

    Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP) is a new technology that allows data transmission from multiple antenna points at the same time over a 5G network running on a specific unlicensed spectrum band, say 5ghz in this example.
    According to Qualcomm, while this does require a central unit along with additional touch points, it's very feasible to setup in indoor locations or private networks like offices, factory, hotels and other private and public places for example. This demo uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 5G modems and the data is streaming in live from Qualcomm's San Diego warehouse where this has been setup. This 5G technology allows gains from 2X to 4X depending on how many modems are deployed and what the settings are.

    Coordinated Multipoint can work also when 2 separate networks are created in the same place and CoMP allows both networks to sync and talk to each other in ways not possible before.

    Another key benefit according to Qualcomm of CoMP is that there are enough antenna's left over to create spatial separation in additional directions. This could be beneficial for unlicensed spectrum and can allow network operators to get more out of the existing spectrum. In layman's terms, it means more devices could probably connect to the same network and there should be a better overall experience along with the expected increase in speed that 5G promises to bring.

    This CoMP technology is still in the research phase and has yet to be proposed to be included in the next 5G standard. What do you think of this technology? Let us know in the comments below.

    Who is paying for these 5G rollouts? Who’s given consent on behalf of the People? Who has done research to prove the new infrastructure’s safety?

    As usual, these important issues are being rubbished by the media and beneficiaries to big business. But they’ll soon see our wrath, as we now this ruling. All Hell is going to break loose in Great Britain and we’re going to take the fight to them. We will NOT be silenced, and you will not wilfully poison our bodies and our families bodies with Class 1 radiation – WE DO NOT CONSENT.

    The fifth-generation cellular network rolling out in America and other countries this year will revolutionize the way our devices connect to the internet and to one another. 5G is such a technologically important leap forward–without it the future smart cities we dream about where everything is connected simply wouldn’t be possible.
    However, there is one major–and unavoidable–drawback to 5G: It’s going to cost you your location privacy. Anyone with access to your ISP’s cell tower data will be able to hone in on your exact location far more precisely than they can today under our 4G networks. The reason for this is that 4G network technology has a wide coverage area when it comes to being broadcast from a single cellular tower. Matter of fact, 4G can be broadcast about a mile from a single tower.

    5G network technology, on the other hand, has a much smaller coverage area, and it can’t penetrate through walls to get indoors as well as 4G technology can. This means 5G networks will require many more cellular towers placed closer together. These towers won’t be like the old towers you envision that look like electrified Eiffel Towers, mind you, they’re just small antennas that will need to be dotted around on rooftops and street lights and inside shopping malls and other buildings. But at the end of the day, dozens and dozens of 5G towers will need to be placed around an area that a single 4G tower would have covered in the past.

    So how does this affect your location privacy? Each time your device connects to a tower, your mobile network knows you are within range of that tower. Under 4G networks, that means your mobile provider could pinpoint your location within about a mile’s accuracy–so your location was pretty well obfuscated. But since 5G towers will need to be everywhere and you’ll only connect to one 5G tower at a time, your mobile network will now be able to pinpoint your location much more accurately–even knowing which building you are in. On top of this, as you move through a city, your mobile network provider will be able to chart the path you take with a high degree of accuracy since your device will keep jumping from connecting to one nearest 5G tower to the next.

    Steve Bellovin, a professor of computer science at Columbia University, recently told the Wall Street Journal that 5G will raise privacy concerns when it comes to location data:

    5G signals in the U.S. will have a very short range and won’t easily go through buildings. This means there need to be many more cell towers. The main way that a cellphone tells where you are–as opposed to a website or an app–is, which tower are you talking to. Today’s towers have a radius of about a mile. If the new towers cover a much smaller area, it means that they know much more precisely where you are . . . You’re going to see a lot more indoor towers–in shopping malls, big office buildings, hotels and so on. So in that sense you are going to get far more precise.

    So what does this lack of location privacy on 5G networks mean to you? If your mobile network sells your data, it will be much easier for data brokers and advertisers to see your current location and target more relevant ads to you based on your location. This data can also enable advertisers and data brokers to see the exact routes you take each day and even which buildings you go into. And anyone with access to your mobile network’s cell tower data will now be able to track your movements in real time.

    But unfortunately, if you want 5G service, there’s no way around giving up more of your location privacy. Welcome to the brave new world of 5G.

    It's a trick within a requirement for implementing 5g RF signal "steering", required to service the high-speed 5G signal.

    Each antenna array in the larger installations is actually a single or dual / quad / more? split antenna directing an "aimed" beam - directed at each specific device - moving or stationary, that without knowing the precise location of the device the 5g service wouldn't be able to precisely aim the RF beam feeding it.

    I don't know that the purpose is the "tracking" side-effect of servicing devices, but it can certainly be used for device location tracking - as that is required to service RF to devices precisely.

    As the device moves the RF signal beamed to it must be handed off and moved to the next steered RF beam to feed the device - hand-off will happen much quicker and between multiple array's within a larger site feeding devices, or between sites as you move physically away from one RF antenna array toward another.

    In smaller array's, say down a building hallway, or outside between building to building, when you turn a physical or RF coverage "corner" the signal will follow the device, as you hold the device the signal moves where you move. Signal strength received at the device - and return signal received at the antenna array's, those signal sources will constantly adjust to make sure your device maintains connectivity.

    Between 5g coverage, 4g coverage can take over - 3g / 2g as well - and the 5g coverage will be most precise as to your location by necessity of the short distance and obstacle limitations of 5g RF propagation.

    It's not hard to imagine that other devices connected up to the RF steering network can also be given your location to seamlessly hand off your changing location to other tracking networks.

    Cameras in particular - but also future services such as directed subject Advertising as you pass by shops - or Advertising nodes with a screen / projector to show you "what you need" and where it is in relation to your precise location.

    The 5g network knows where you seem to be headed by direction - aided by your or it's internet search query - advertisements to grab your interest before you get to your destination to redirect you and your buying power to other destinations.

    Of course recharging your device as you move can also be accomplished, since the tight RF beam can be joined with a tight recharging power beam to feed your batteries.

    Since everyone will be known, tracked and contact maintained, perhaps it will become illegal to turn off your device or leave it behind? Maybe your front door won't unlock without it?

    5g isn't the same as previous generations of trackable devices, but it's really not that much different in locating you than it is today. Your device location is known via Cell RF and Wifi RF, even Bluetooth RF, precisely enough today.

    What is different is the amount of RF energy spraying out in close proximity to everyone around those many times more abundant RF sources, beaming focused RF signals right through you and I on it's way to servicing another device - with our RF sensitive bodies caught in between.

    Millions of RF sources, some right outside your bedroom window, perhaps located on your own dwelling, day and night 24/7 pumping out RF in proximity to you.

    Millions of people connected 24/7 needing to see "Cat." images, it's vital stuff. The ancient Egyptians tried to warn us, but so far we haven't listened. ;)

    It's the increase in RF exposure for everyone that's the real danger. The additional information gathered by 5g's more precise location positioning is incidental - not to be ignored - but the real danger is the increase in RF exposure.

    Yes, but it's not about locations anymore, IoT, All smart devices and technologies, AI, ML, Bigdata, Cloud computing ,,,etc They all need more bandwidth to be effective. They don't care about human health, it's all about Intelligence and more control. Even the whales in the oceans were not excluded from the damage.

    Regarding the Feb. 20 2019 Economy & Business article “ U.S. has strong start in race for 5G, report says”:

    "The telecom industry touts 5G’s future benefits, most of which are still speculative, while ignoring its significant costs. Not everyone in Congress agrees that rapid deployment of 5G is a national imperative. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (D-Calif.) first want proof that it’s safe.

    It’s unlikely they’ll get any, because the Federal Communications Commission has protected its pet industry for years. It prohibits objections to wireless devices on health grounds as long as they comply with radio-frequency radiation guidelines adopted in 1996 and never updated for newer technology.

    It rejected the first national study done since then, which found clear evidence linking 2G and 3G to cancer in rats, as irrelevant to humans. And it only considers effects caused by heating, ignoring the serious nonthermal effects.

    Up until now, most of the public’s exposure to radio-frequency radiation has come from handheld devices. Upon deployment of the dense networks of small cells planned for 5G, which will also have 4G antennas to fill in bandwidth gaps, public exposure will reach a whole new level of magnitude.

    Thousands of independent scientific studies have shown that the electromagnetic radio waves that transmit wireless signals seriously damage living tissues — in humans, animals, even plants.

    Ironically, other countries have responded by adopting far stricter RF exposure standards than the United States — including China."

    "On March 27, 2018, Berkeley professor Dr. Joel Moskowitz, was presented with the James Madison Freedom of Information Award by the Society for Professional Journalists for his work uncovering the California Department of Public Health(CDPH) Recommendations on How to Reduce Exposure to Radiofrequency Energy from Cell Phones.

    Dr. Moskowitz, who is the director of the Center for Family and Community Health at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health, knew of the CDPH guidelines since 2013, however they had never been published. He found out that the CDPH had been working on safe cell phone guidelines since 2009. After many requests to the CDPH for release of these recommendations he filed a lawsuit in 2016 against the CDPH through the Freedom of Information Act. After the successful lawsuit, a Sacramento judge ordered that the CDPH release the documents and a 2 page draft copy, not to be released to the public was sent to Dr. Moskowitz in March 2017.

    In a March 2017 SF Gate article about the CDPH draft release, it was noted that Superior Court Judge Shelleyanne Chang stated the CDPH does have an obligation to inform the public about public health issues gathered by it’s own scientists.

    Dr. Moskowitz has been involved in educating others about the science indicating harm from wireless radiation for almost a decade. He, along with over 230 other international EMF peer reviewed scientists, have signed a petition, calling for the UN to issue new standards for non-ionizing electromagnetic that are protective of human and environmental health.

    Professor Moskowitz was also instrumental in passing Berkeley’s Cell Phone Right to Know ordinance, the first in the Nation to require cell phone sellers to post a brief warning in their stores about the hazards of cell phone radiation. This is similar to the warning cell phone manufacturers include in the fine print of their phone manuals and that few people ever read. Despite appeals and lawsuits by the telecommunications industry the Berkeley ordinance so far has prevailed, however, it may be challenged in the Supreme Court.

    The Berkeley cell phone ordinance required posting reads “To assure safety, the Federal Government requires that cell phones meet radio frequency (RF) exposure guidelines. If you carry or use your phone in a pants or shirt pocket or tucked into a bra when the phone is ON and connected to a wireless network, you may exceed the federal guidelines for exposure to RF radiation. This potential risk is greater for children. Refer to the instructions in your phone or user manual for information about how to use your phone safely.”

    Europe is about to go through a giant technological transformation, one that will bring us “smart homes”, “smart cities” and the much-hyped “internet of things”. The vehicle for this transformation is 5G, the fifth-generation mobile service. 5G will allow countless appliances and everyday objects to be connected to the internet at all times. It will bring driverless cars, hologram images instead of video, smart fridges, nappies, washing machines, electricity circuits, coffee machines, your blood sugar, your medicine intake… But none of this comes without a cost. Such a level of connectivity will require many more base stations, which raises a growing concern that electromagnetic field radiation may be harmful to health. There is disagreement among scientists on whether 5G millimetre waves are less or more dangerous than 3 or 4G. Scientists wary of potential health risks from 5G point out that nobody knows as very little research has been done. Nobody has been asked whether we want to go down this path and we are heading into this future without consultation and with very little public debate.

    I can't tolerate high SAR values. My hands go numb, my head and body hurts sometimes, so I usually keep a longer distance between cell towers.

    With 5g you won't be but a few dozen feet between some "cells", likely closer very often.
    There are a lot more RF meters around than just a few years ago, it might be a good idea to get a competent one and measure current levels of RF at various bands / frequencies, find the strong emitters - before 5g roll out - and then continue to measure regularly for new sources - track them down and see if they are publicly announced or hidden from the public eye - only an RF meter / measuring device would be able to see their newly added RF pollution.

    Phones themselves are something else, IDK how the 5g will affect output from the cell phone, but according to what I've read it can vary greatly - some of the new 5g backs look pretty powerful, and that could end up output more RF than we are experiencing with 4g and before.

    The FCC page on SAR + pdf don't have anything useful in the way of measurements, but it has some useful comments - which might misdirect concerns away from a device when the concerns are valid in many uses:

While SAR values are an important tool in judging the maximum possible exposure to RF energy from a particular model of cell phone, a single SAR value does not provide sufficient information about the amount of RF exposure under typical usage conditions to reliably compare individual cell phone models. Rather, the SAR values collected by the FCC are intended only to ensure that the cell phone does not exceed the FCC’s maximum permissible exposure levels even when operating in conditions which result in the device’s highest possible - but not its typical - RF energy absorption for a user."

    A cell phone induced to engage highest power output isn't "unusual", I'm sure my phone and most others hit that maximum during daily use many times. Moving from dense to less dense coverage requires higher power, and most of the time I am not "close" to a cell tower.

    Watch that CBN report on Cell Phone measurements, it's clear that most of us - not me - hold their phones too close to our body during use and for many carried too close to the body for far too many hours of exposure.

    Swedish doctors found that people who use cell phones for more than a year had a 70 percent greater risk of brain cancer than those who used the wireless devices for less than a year. The study, published in the International Journal of Oncology, found that people who used mobile phones for more than 25 years had a 300 percent greater risk of developing the dreaded disease than those who used mobile phones for one year or less. The study’s authors concluded that “glioma and also acoustic neuroma are caused by RF-EMF emissions from wireless phones.”

    FACT: The World Health Organization (WHO) has upgraded cell phone radiation to B2 category, meaning “possibly carcinogenic.”

    "Intel has halted a long-term plan to share 5G modem technology with a Chinese government-backed chipmaker, due in part to concerns over recent U.S. tensions with China, Nikkei reports. The deal was previously expected to expand Intel’s opportunities in China’s growing market, while aiding the Chinese government’s plans to develop its own chip industry.

    Following a 2014 investment, under which Intel took a 20 percent stake in state-owned Tsinghua Unigroup, the companies last February announced a 5G tie-up as a “powerful combination targeting 5G smartphones.” Their “long-term strategic collaboration” was meant to create a 5G Android smartphone platform for sale in China in the second half of 2019, combining Intel’s 5G modem with a Unigroup chipset.

    Now the Unigroup deal is off, a recent decision that Intel confirmed and characterized as mutual, while saying that it was not based on political pressure from the U.S. government. Even so, Nikkei reports that Intel wanted not to “somehow upset U.S. authorities given the current tensions” with China, and backed off the deal after the unexpected departure of its key advocate, former CEO Brian Krzanich.

    The Trump Administration has spent the past year fighting a trade war with China’s government, while simultaneously accusing Chinese cellular companies Huawei and ZTE of facilitating espionage and committing sanctions violations. Though Huawei has repeatedly denied any espionage-related activities, it has faced mounting accusations from the government and private companies, while ZTE made a deal with the administration to resolve sanctions-related claims. Concerns still persist, however, and the U.S. government is threatening to ban the Chinese companies’ equipment from being used in cellular networks.

    Intel’s 5G modem plans have also changed considerably over the last year. The company decided to skip its first-generation modem in favor of a more power-efficient sequel, delaying the arrival of consumer 5G products from 2019 to 2020. At this year’s CES and Mobile World Congress shows, the chipmaker focused largely on announcing new 5G server and base station components, letting rivals such as Qualcomm, Samsung, and Huawei premiere early consumer 5G devices.

    Following the breakup of its Intel deal, Unigroup now says that it’s working on its own 5G modem without Intel’s assistance. Similarly, Huawei has already developed its own 5G modem and smartphones for sale to consumers in China, while other Chinese smartphone makers are expected to rely substantially on 5G modems from Qualcomm and MediaTek."

    Why did the Huawei CEO bald-faced lie about it then?

    If we can't trust them to speak the truth about what is clearly true - that Huawei and other Chinese communications companies are required to turn over any and all data to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), as you correctly pointed out, then why do business with them?

    What is clear is that there are many good reasons for barring Huawei and other Chinese companies - who are all under the direct control of the CCP - from gaining "intimate" access to the data pipelines tasked with interconnecting communications in any country.

    "Fearing unknown health risks, members of the City Council in Portland, Oregon, will vote Wednesday to oppose the rollout of 5G wireless networks.

    In a proposed resolution, Mayor Ted Wheeler, along with Commissioners Chloe Eudaly and Amanda Fritz, write that there’s evidence suggesting wireless networks can cause health problems — including cancer.

    They express concern that the Federal Communications Commission has not conducted enough research to demonstrate that 5G networks are safe, while at the same time prohibiting state and local governments from passing their own regulations on telecommunications technology.

    And while Wheeler, Eudaly, and Fritz are correct about the FCC’s power to dictate how state and local governments manage wireless networks, the connection between 5G networks and cancer is a lot more complicated than they say it is.

    What Does the Science Say About 5G and Cancer?
    “There is evidence to suggest that exposure to radio frequency emissions generated by wireless technologies could contribute to adverse health conditions such as cancer,” reads the proposed resolution. This evidence comes from a large-scale study conducted by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

    The final results of this study, published in November 2018, showed a strong association between the type of radiation used for mobile phone signals and certain types of cancerous tumors in lab rats.

    But that’s where the situation gets tough.

    The NTP study, which took place over 10 years and involved exposing more than 7,000 rats and mice to radio-frequency radiation — the type used in cell phones — didn’t actually involve 5G networks. It didn’t even involve 4G or 4G LTE, which are used today. It focused only on signals used by wireless technology under the 2G and 3G standards.

    These technology standards, which use the same radiation frequency range as 4G, modulate the signal differently. 2G and 3G may have been the state-of-the-art when the study began, but since large-scale studies on cancer take a long time to identify statistically significant effects, the technology has undergone multiple evolutions in the intervening time. So as Inversepreviously reported, it’s nearly impossible to say whether these results will apply to 5G hardware.

    Since the available research doesn’t address 5G, the Portland City Council’s resolution demands that the FCC embark on another such research project to assess the health effects of 5G. Presumably, it would take just as long to conduct another study on the hypothesized connection between 5G and cancer, but by that time, the industry will almost certainly have moved on to 6G — or 7G.

    By the time studies show whether 5G causes cancer, it probably won't be the industry standard anymore.

    Local Versus Federal Regulations
    The Portland City Council’s resolution is just as much about local control as it is about the uncertain connection between 5G and cancer, though.

    In their resolution, Wheeler, Eudaly, and Fritz express dismay that federal law prevents state and local governments from refusing federal mandates on telecommunications standards.

    FCC regulations also require state and local governments to accept all telecom companies’ applications to build new wireless communication infrastructure. The mayor and the city council members are wary of what federal control over this massive wireless network overhaul will mean for their constituents’ exposure to 5G frequencies.

    “Wireless companies in the U.S. say they’ll have to install about 300,000 new antennas, close to the total number of cell towers built over the past three decades,” they write. “This substantial increase in cell towers deployed in communities means greater contact with them.”

    Of course, this exposure is only harmful if 5G is found to affect human health. And unfortunately, the only way to figure that out would be for the FCC or DHHS to conduct another large-scale trial — a trial that wouldn’t be done in time to matter, since 5G is practically knocking on the door.

    That doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be studied, though. And in fact, a small but growing movement of European scientists is calling for caution amid the dawning of 5G networks around the world, arguing that the available data on the health risks of cell phone radiation should be cause enough for everyone to slow down.

    Wednesday will bring the results of the Portland City Council’s vote, which could set the tone for how the federal government responds to public concerns about the health effects of 5G networks — as well as state and local governments’ demands to set their own standards.

    Whatever happens in Portland, it seems clear that this proposed resolution is just a preview of the growing opposition movement against 5G."

    The push for 5G is all about getting people to spend more, recurring income for everything. No more apps on your phone they'll all be a service for which you have to pay monthly. All media will become streamed media, phones won't even offer storage anymore. It's difficult for me to believe anyone could be simple enough to think 5G is about user satisfaction. It's purpose is to shoot fish in a 5G barrel.

    I think 128GB will be standard because caching those amount of downstreams isn't possible if you pair it with 16GB or 32GB smart-phone.
    They only cache in few mins but the amount of writes will be more than we did write on PCs few decades ago.

    Only problem I have with 5G is it requires more stations to maintain 100% speed and power efficiency. Only drawback with higher frequency is they are substantially weaker than lower freq when transmitting to long distance comm. links.

    That's not quite exactly what is going on.

    The signal isn't "weaker", it doesn't propagate as far for the same power output as lower frequencies, and doesn't pass through physical objects, so it won't "go around corners" or through trees / rises in terrain.

    I haven't gotten the details on the stations being used, to see how much power they use, but it's possible they require *more* power - a stronger signal, not weaker - to travel the same distance for the same coverage.

    And, since there are so many stations to cover around objects - and those stations are close to those objects and walking / driving paths the concern is that people are getting much closer to the higher power station RF being used to make the signal cover the areas served.

    It's important to get the words correct when trying to describe the concerns, as "weaker" is kinda correct - the signal isn't as effective at the higher frequency for the same amount of power used, but making the stations closer together and higher output power to make up for being "weaker" are exactly the problems we are concerned about with 5g RF.

    "Current and former Pentagon leaders are warning about the risks to future military operations posed by allies in Europe and Asia using Chinese technology in their 5G wireless telecommunications networks.
    In a statement Wednesday, six former officials note that the immense bandwidth and super-high speeds of the coming 5G systems — up to 100 times faster than current 4G platforms — will make them attractive for the U.S. military to share data with allies or transfer information in combat.

    And they and U.S. defense officials warn that allowing Chinese firms such as Huawei to outfit these networks poses unacceptable risks of espionage and disruptive cyberattacks on military operations because of the firm’s alleged ties to the Chinese government and a 2017 Chinese law that requires companies, if directed, to cooperate in surveillance activities.

    “While our concern is for future operations, the time for action is now,” said the leaders, who include retired Adm. James Stavridis and retired Gen.     Their blunt statement — the first by so many former senior commanders — was timed to the Wednesday opening of a NATO summit of foreign ministers in Washington.

    “As military leaders who have commanded U.S. and allied troops around the world, we have grave concerns about a future where a Chinese-developed 5G network is widely adopted among our allies and partners,’’ they said.

    Pentagon leaders also are sounding the alarm. Last week, Ellen Lord, undersecretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment, said at an Atlantic Council conference that China is engaged in a struggle with the United States for “digital supremacy” economically and militarily.

    She called for an integrated U.S. government strategy in partnership with Silicon Valley and the investment community to counter China’s ambitions. She warned that if other partners use equipment from a vendor such as Huawei, “we could be overcome quickly with technical overmatch,” which could diminish battlefield advantage.

    “If our allies and partners go with a Huawei solution, we need to reconsider how we share critical information with them,” Lord said.

    Last week, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Joseph F. Dunford Jr. forecast a “broad, fundamental” threat to national security if Huawei is permitted to build allies’ networks. “A foundational element of an alliance is the ability to share information securely,” he told the House Armed Services Committee.

    Last month, acting defense secretary Patrick Shanahan noted a number of Chinese government initiatives that seek to enhance Chinese influence globally, often through questionable means, he said. “With initiatives like the Digital Silk Road, Made in China 2025 and Thousand Talents Program in play, which spur companies and individuals to carry out its bidding, China aims to steal its way to a China-controlled global technological infrastructure, including a 5G network,” he told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

    “Let me be perfectly clear,” he said, “the United States does not oppose competition, as long as it takes place on a fair and level playing field. However, we cannot accept the unfair and illegal actions of others who intend to tilt the playing field through predatory economics and underhanded tactics.”

    There is no U.S. supplier of end-to-end 5G network components. The major U.S. telecom companies, which have pledged to exclude Huawei and another Chinese firm, ZTE, from their 5G systems, rely on European providers Ericsson and Nokia and the South Korean firm Samsung. But Huawei, the world’s largest telecom equipment provider, is making a big play for business with rural carriers in the United States and with countries in Europe and the developing world.

    U.S. law bars the government and its contractors from purchasing gear made by Huawei and ZTE. Legislation is pending in Congress that would prevent U.S. companies from supplying Huawei and other Chinese telecommunications companies with critical components. The White House has had ready for months an executive order that would effectively ban Chinese companies from the U.S. telecom supply chain.

    Countries such as Poland, Estonia and Germany in Europe and Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines in Asia are weighing whether to include Huawei in their next-generation systems. The United States has mounted a campaign to persuade partners that using Huawei poses unacceptable security risks.

    The former U.S. commanders said their concerns fall into three categories: espionage, military operations and human rights. Noting the 2017 Chinese law, they alleged that Huawei’s provision of radio antennas and other communications gear could provide the Chinese government with a means to capture data “at will.”

    Huawei’s founder, Ren Zhengfei, insists his company has never enabled Chinese government espionage and it doesn’t plan to. But U.S. officials are skeptical that the firm would resist a government directive.

    The Pentagon is weighing how it might use the future 5G networks to share intelligence or conduct military operations. Former officials say the shortcomings of current satellite communications, which are vulnerable to Chinese and Russian jamming, make 5G wireless systems a logical alternative. But if they use untrustworthy equipment, these officials say, the data could be stolen or manipulated, or operations could be disrupted.

    “You’re trying to target an adversary’s capability,’’ said retired Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery, a former Pacific Command director of operations and a former policy director of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “The data needs to be accurate and near real time and reliable. A 5G network is going to be highly desirable — unless it’s built by Huawei.”

    The former officials also said they are concerned that the export of China’s 5G technologies “will advance a pernicious high-tech authoritarianism.”

    If Huawei is invited by foreign governments to build their new networks, Beijing could have access to the data of billions of people, they allege. China already leads the world in the deployment of facial and gait recognition in settings ranging from airports to classrooms, and it has created what is probably the world’s largest censorship apparatus to monitor the private messages of 1 billion users on the WeChat app.

    In the western Chinese region of Xinjiang, authorities have relied on the sweeping collection of electronic communications to support a detention and internment program that has ensnared more than 1 million Muslim citizens.

    The former officials say they fear unbridled data-gathering coupled with information gleaned from 5G networks could give Beijing “unprecedented powers of foreign influence to favor authoritarian allies . . . and punish human-rights activists the world over.”

    The other former officials signing the statement are retired Admiral Timothy Keating, former head of Pacific Command, and retired Army Gen. Keith Alexander, former director of the National Security Agency.

    That's the correct timeframe for 5G maturity. Yeah, GP's are hard to find.
    I think it'll take around 3 years to get decent battery life and good connectivity till last mile.

    Verizon activated its first 5G network in the U.S. on April 3, a week ahead of schedule, and we flew to Chicago to see what it’s like. Even with using the mid-range Motorola Moto Z3 from 2018 and the 5G Moto Mod, it’s still a high cost of entry to use 5G. So is it worth upgrading your phone, at least in 2019?

    Looking at this video alone the current 5G implementation seems overhyped. Yes, download speeds are much higher but this is using a site that has very little users. As soon as more 5G users will connect to it - the speeds will drop. For example my Galaxy S9 currently shows 25 up 20 down speed with strong LTE connection, and sometimes speed goes lower if the site becomes overloaded with users. And this video does not show much difference in terms of ping when he tests 5G and LTE.

    Nah, they're talking about the bare minimum and that as being protected, in other words no user read/write. The corporate boy wonders want to take us to dumb phones that provide services all of which live on the net. That is the true purpose of 5G, making everything a service for which you will pay recurring subscriptions. The transition is already starting and not just on phones, there is a reason your Windows 10 PC is constantly reminding you that Windows is a service.

    Washington DC April 15th - The trump administration rolls out a new plan to upgrade american communication to 5g, and dedicate billions to rural broadband access. RFD-TV’s Sarah Mock has the story. While the white house supports the nationwide rollout of an advanced 5g network, they say rural can’t be left behind.
    “We are also focused on rural communities that do not have access to broadband at all. Farmers just haven’t been treated properly, and now we’re making it a priority, that’s the area we want to go to first. We’re also working with federal agencies to get networks built in rural America faster, and at much, much lower cost.”

    The rural digital opportunity fund, proposed by the FCC, would dedicate $20.4 billion over ten years to expanding high speed internet access to undeserved and un-served communities.

    “This money will extend high speed broadband to up to 4 million homes and small businesses, in rural America. These next generation networks will bring greater opportunity to America’s heartland, and pave the way for 5G technologies.”

    The money for this plan, he says, will come from the universal service fund and provide $2 billion a year to rural carriers to support the build out of broadband networks. Streamlining regulation is another priority, trump says, his administration plans to shorten the permitting period and cap local fees on 5g and broadband builds. producers present at the event expressed their support.

    “The theme that you struck today of deregulation and broadening it out, and letting American business, letting America’s farmers fix the problems of this country really rings heart with us. That’s what we try to do and that’s what we’ll bring forward to build this nation.”

    Though the proposal must still go through notice and public comment periods, Pai is hopeful to begin reverse auctions to distribute the money later this year. For RFD-TV, I’m Sarah Mock in Washington.

    The president also announced a third 5g spectrum auction set for late this year, a process that’s drawn attention from those concerned that china could be surging ahead of the us in 5g adoption, which the administration says is a security and competitive concern.     Note @ 12:45, high power 4G = 300w , high power 5G = 1000w !

    To make up for the high drop off in power over distance the 5G cells will need 3x+ more power in the same geography - at much higher frequencies, with much higher densities of cell's required, all adding up to a much higher RF exposure for people, plants, and animals.

    For me, it boils down to the feasibility of Gigabit-grade LTE, supported on some networks and devices such as the Netgear M1 portable hotspot.

    What 5G promises has several requirements that are concerning (to me):

    2. Cost: Like any new tech, the first wave of devices are likely to have outrageous pricing, topped with

    3. Actual viability: That high drop in power over distance means that 5G will, at best, function at full capacity in close proximity to a cell. And these types of waves are easily impeded by ordinary obstacles, such as your hands, etc. Translating into more antennas per device, and practically, even greater battery drain. And that last bit ties to #1 above: Potentially overpriced gadgets with subpar network performance in some areas, and questionable usability with a shorter than average battery life.

    A switch to 5G for networks omitting support for 4G LTE Gigabit speeds at this time would only play out as a marketing ploy. In an era where (some) mobile networks are bullshitting about 5G -E , a lot here has to be taken with a grain of salt.

    It's way too early to get reliable reports - 5G isn't fully implemented anywhere in all available bands, so who knows until it happens around were we live and we see it ourselves, or don't see it.

    I've posted a number of articles and channels that cover these issues in the past, in a few threads, do a local search on my posts.

    It's probably a good thing that people have reduced their use of cellphones for voice calls, holding the RF generating device as far from your body as possible, and varying the exposure area can reduce the concentration of exposure over time.

    I don't think 4G is going away for a long time, just like 3G is still with us and how it took years for analog cell coverage to disappear.

    It's going to take a long time before 5G rolls out everywhere, and if problems arise during that roll out I think people are going to be very much more "awake" about it than back in the 1980's.

    There is talk about switching the frequency use bands down from where they are now proposed for 5G, which will take some work to change, but it might be what is needed. Right now most (all?) 5G rolled out publicly are only using the lower bands, not the super high speed top millimeter wavelengths.

    5G in total for mobile hasn't really been implemented anywhere - yet. If we are talking about 5G including the highest speed band of frequencies - where you get the magical speeds, AFAIK it's only in lab or testing stage.

    And, in some current 5G rollout's it's not mobile 5G instead it's a Wifi service with a 5G "hotspot".

    Semi-5G implementations are described in this recent article covering, with ATT 5GE being the most notorious - are faster 4G LTE, and have zero 5G in it. :)

    Despite little coverage and early hiccups, the 5G rollout is chugging along.

    Verizon launched the first "5G" service in the world in October, but it's a bit of a technicality -- a fixed broadband replacement, rather than a mobile service.     There's also some debate about whether the service even qualifies as 5G: It doesn't use the standards the industry has agreed on.     What about this 5G E thing from AT&T?
    Sorry, but that's more marketing fluff. AT&T's 5G E stands for 5G Evolution, or its upgraded 4G LTE network that has a path to real 5G.

    But the designation, which showed up on phones early this year, has caused some consumer confusion, with some thinking they already have 5G. To be clear, it's not, with many bashing AT&T for misleading customers. Sprint filed a lawsuit against AT&T, which, according to an AT&T spokesperson, the companies "amicably settled." AT&T has said it's "proud" that it went with the 5G E name.

    5G E does bring higher speeds, but not the kind of true benefits real 5G would bring.

    Even that future 5G chip doesn't come with onboard millimeter wavelength (highest 5G speeds) functions, an additional "millimeter wave module" is required:

    These speed test's comparing 5g and 4g at the same location are bogus comparisons. I've never seen such slow 4g speeds ever, even 3g speeds were faster. Those 4g numbers make the comparison worthless, CNET should have just shown 5g speeds alone. Note the super slow upload speeds on 5g.

    At times the 5g speeds shown on that tour are less than the 4g speeds I get already, about 160 / 15 mbps - on a 3 year old phone.

    Those 4G speeds show Sprint's lack of commitment to long term coverage for their customers. How long has 4G been in existence? Sprint couldn't get decent performance out of 4g in all that time? So now for 5G Sprint is putting in the effort to improve the coverage - but the paid for Sprint 4g service is left lagging? PR nightmare, I wonder why Sprint didn't figure this out before inviting journalists to tour that route?

    It is also telling how the intro starts, she's inside a vehicle and is losing and getting back 5g connectivity. All the Sprint Tour speed tests are done outside. Except for the bus hosted 5g tests, which likely use a gain antenna on the outside of the bus it looks like 5g inside a car won't hold the connection reliably. Yes, 5g is not wide spread yet, but in order to close up the coverage it's going to take a gigantic build-out of cell's.

    The LG V50 5G looks nice, especially with the added 2nd screen case. :)
