I just purchased the Cydia app Wifi Booster, and it's pretty cool. It removes the signal limit on weak networks. I just connected to a network that normally only my laptop can connect to.

Per my question in post #48; I tried a few programs and I think I'm going to purchase CopyTrans in the next couple weeks. Seems to do what I need, and I like the simple GUI.

I'm sure glad I didn't sell my Apple stock. First quarter revenue of $46.33 billion, profit of $13.06 billion. 37 MILLION iPhones sold. AAPL up $32 right now in after hours.

Jailbroke my 4S a few days ago, same day I dropped it and cracked the glass (on the back of the phone).
I never used a case because I figured the insurance would cover it, but they expect me to pay the first $250 for a replacement.
Looks like I have to live with the crack -

what would be the benefits of jailbreaking the iPhones? and would it void the warranty?
thanks. -
Benefits: Cydia apps, themes, and fixes.
I use(from Cydia):
TetherMe $5: SBSettings For iOS 5 Released; Includes Notification Center Integration
SBSettings: TetherMe: Enable Native Tethering on iPhone / iOS 4.0.1 Even If Your Carrier Doesn't Support It | Redmond Pie
Winterboard: WinterBoard For iOS 5 Now Available For Download [Cydia Tweak] | Redmond Pie
Dreamboard: Alternative Theming Platform DreamBoard Goes Free For iPhone And iPod touch | Redmond Pie
SlyCam: Take Super Quick Photos Right from Notification Center with 'SlyCam for NotificationCenter'
WiFi Booster(Very Cool): Improve Your WiFi Signals With WiFi Booster (Cydia Tweak) | Maypalo -
personally, i really don't see it for me. tethering is allowed on all the networks here, and i don't need SBSettings either as i don't fiddle with them. themes aren't for me either, and i doubt i'll ever use Cydia apps; one of the main reasons for me choosing an iPhone 4S was that all the apps would be checked by Apple, rather than a free flow like in Android. i'll pass. thanks for clarifying.

say u had a router that wasn't "wow'ing" u with it's OEM performance. it just worked. then one day, u found out about DD-WRT and applied it to your router. the DD-WRT unleashes your router's full potential and makes it work in a way u never thought your router could.
an iphone, from the store, is VERY restricted. there are many things in cydia that will transform your iphone to anything u like it to be. there are many apps that increase your daily efficiency by a noticeable margin and just make every day things for u more convenient. then there's installous...
an unjailbroken apple device is just an expensive paper weight to me. it's totally useless unless i want to spend $500 on apps. -
like which apps? all the apps that i need are in the Apple App Store. i'm not saying that it's not good, just that it's not for me.
-
cydia is more than just apps. it digs deep within the phone and unlocks new things that will simply wow u. u can tweak your whole iOS to your liking. unlike apps where ppl are just pumping out anything to make a quick buck, cydia is made up of different groups of hackers/developers. they produce tweaks that will really make u love your phone THAT much more. if u'r not into tweaks and performance upgrades then i'm sure u'll have a blast customizing different themes to your liking. -
is there a chance that it'll permanently disable my iPhone 4S? i don't want to take that risk.
-
I've JB'ed my 4 four times now and although the first time I had to use TinyUmbrella to get it back to restore, since then it's been pretty easy. I haven't read many incidents of people "permanently" disabling their phone and if something does happen, if you're still under warranty, I believe Apple will restore it.
The only reason I JB'ed mine is because:
1. If I want to use tethering I can (I rarely do because my carrier is notorious for tethering detection)
2. I use SBSettings for all the shortcuts
3. I use a custom keyboard (I have the one with the number row on the top so I don't have to go to another "screen" to input numbers)
The last one is the one I would miss the most if I wasn't JB'ed.
I'll admit that I've tried out the game console emulators but they're a bit hard to play on the small screen. It is cool that you can use a wireless PS3 or Wii controller with your iPhone (using Bluetooth) so the programmers who do work on JB apps are pretty amazing. I have friends who are JB'ed but that's because they don't want to "pay" for apps so there is a lot of piracy out there... personally if I like an app, I'll pay for it (although I have a limit on how much I will pay for a single app).
But, like you've said, you may not need to be JB'ed. I disagree with houstoned a bit as there are many people (millions) who do fine in Apple's jail. Only techies really care about an "open" system (which is what most of the members on this site are) but for the average consumer, the "closed" ecosystem is just fine (and you don't have to spend tons of money on apps to enjoy your iPhone). -
"bricking" your iphone is sooo iOS3. u need not to worry about anything voiding your warranty or messing up anything on your phone. there's virtually 0% risk in jailbreaking if u have the right program(s) and follow the procedures correctly.
@BigNerd: maybe i was a little bit extreme in some of my comparisons, but it was just to make my point. to me, if u'r not going to jailbreak your iphone then there's no reason to waste money on one. a free smartphone can do most of the things an unjailbroken iphone can do without the eye gouging price tag. -
I'm pretty sure most jailbreaks love the fact they can take away the folder restrictions and put in as many icons(even other folders).
Being able to take away the 3G restrictions on some apps like YouTube and the AppStore comes in handy. YouTube is basically unwatchable with the 3G restriction and I don't need to be download a large app on Wifi.
Also iProtect which allows you to password protect any app.
Backgrounder is one of my favorites too. True multitasking, and easily toggled.
And of course access to your iPhone's file system.
I can go on & on but just mentioned several reasons I can't see anyone turning away from. -
^ Oh yeah... that reminds me... the other useful JB app I bought was My3G... it fakes your iPhone into thinking you have a WiFi connection when you just have 3G.
It's very helpful for installing apps that restrict you to WiFi or the best, being able to FaceTime on 3G. I used it over Christmas to ask my relative what toy to get for their kid so I FaceTimed at the ToysRUs and they told me which one their kid didn't have, it was pretty cool as other people were wondering what I was doing. -
While i've been looking out for a Jailbreak as late as December last yr. for iOS 5 i'm really, honestly not that interested anymore. The iPhone 4S has been glorious for me out-the-box. I don't mind spending a little money for whatever apps I may need.

I should've waited for the iPhone 5
And now it looks like it's coming out just a few months after the 4S! -
List your the top ten "must have" apps for iPhone 4s that you would recommend.

Anyway, my killer apps are:
Netflix
Pandora
Bubble Pop (completely pointless but insanely addictive)
And that's about it. Haven't used mine much yet... -
Flame posts were deleted. No infractions levied today. Though "you" (and you know who you are) won't find amnesty for the same in the future.
-
Facebook
Pandora
Words with Friends
SoundHound
Flashlight
Camera+
Yelp
Dictionary
Magic Piano
RL Classic (scanner)
Those are the most useful in my mind -
Google Voice & Skype
Evernote
Netflix
Etrade
Score Center & Sportacular
Y!Messenger, BeejiveIM and Twitteriffic
Firefox Home
OWA (For my company Outlook email)
Dropbox
Navigon and MapQuest
LogMeIn
So much more, these are what I can think of at the moment. Plus the Jailbreak apps & tweaks.
As of games, it varies. I've been addicted to Jetpack, Rage HD, & Zombie Highway lately. EA sports Tiger Woods 12 is pretty good too. -
For people who have lots of lists.
There is nothing like....
Awesome Note -
Netflix
Angry Birds (all 3)
Scrabble
Any Flashlight app (I'm surprised how often I use this)
NBA GameTime (I'm in multiple fantasy basketball leagues)
Google Voice (free texting)
Dropbox (although I hear good things about box.net)
Shazam ("What's the name of this song?")
Fandango -
-
The problem with the box.net app, which I found out yesterday, is unlike the dropbox app, if it doesn't know the file type, you can't do anything with it. It goes cross-eyed on you. With the DropBox app, if it encounters a "strange" file type, it gives you a range of programs to open it with.
For instance, I have an epub file in my box.net account. I click it and it goes cross-eyed. Starts to drool too. Yuck! Do the same in DropBox, it gives me several options including the iBooks app to open it with.
Shame too since I have a free 50GB account thanks to the HP Touchpad. My DropBox account is only 3.13GB. -
Okay so I just downloaded and installed three Splashtop apps after seeing this new thread. Guys these are must haves; the stuff is amazing.
I got Splashtop Remote Desktop, CamCam, and TouchPad. All work remarkably!
Awesome stuff. -
+1 for Splashtop. Good stuff.
Though I use Logitech's Touchmouse app to control my lappy when I hook it up to the bigscreen TV via HDMI. It's pretty cool and works very well. Like a wireless mouse/remote. -
-
I used to play Word With Friends, but the number of bonus squares and their proximity make score differences really huge.
I found Scrabble to be a bit more balanced. -
-
And so far TeamViewer > Splashtop Remote Desktop because i'm having trouble logging in remotely with Splash at this time. Locally works fine.
Don't have such issues with TViewer.
EDIT: Okay, so I'm an idiot. It works remotely as well. I didn't read how-to in the first place. I had to use gmail to get it working. But i'll say TViewer is still the better of the two for the mere fact that it's easier to use.
Splashtop RD is very much like M$ Windows RD. You have to make sure ports are forwarded in your Router etc. More complicated. -
Have to admit, this is pretty cool:

^If the iPhone had a bigger screen I could actually see that working... 3.5" is too small for infotainment systems.
-
Apparently they intend to design similar set-ups for other handsets/OSs.
Would work well with the likes of the Galaxy Note maybe. -
why didn't they make one for android?
-
The company hasn't even made the one for the iPhone yet.
They're raising start-up capital.
And it's easier to make accessories for something that's 'standardised' like the iPhone - they all have the same dock connector, positioned in the same place on the handset and in the case of the iPhone 4 and 4S, you have two physically identical handsets that you can tailor your product towards, there are almost no examples of two physically identical Android handsets.
Plus, as we all know, you can get away with charging more for a product when it's connected to Apple/iOS. -
i just found out about ifunbox and ifile. i love tweaking these awesome dreamboard themes. these are currently my 2 favorite themes.
Boxor HD - VERY high tech theme. it has like 5 or 6 pages, and has active RSS and twitter feeds.
Rain 1.3 - very sleek theme with animated wallpapers. ie: in the picture, the weather is cloudy so there's clouds moving across the screen.
-
Scramble with Friends is ace!
-
I've only used Winterboard, it provides pretty much every tweak I can think of.. but if it is better I might try it out. -
i just checked out splashtop and that app is pretty dang awesome! thanks for the suggestion. -

Hey, I have an old iPhone 3G 8GB that I've been thinking about selling... anyone know what's the average going price I should expect?

It will fetch some interest and give you some ideas... -
