Not with a 128 gb SSD and an above-FHD screen you couldn't...you can't compare a RMBP 13 to an HDD-equipped, non-unibody, low-resolution laptop and say "Apple Tax." You're not paying an apple tax; you're paying a high-spec tax that you'd pay with Windows OEMs as well. If you don't want a high-spec laptop, that's fine, but your problem is not "Apple tax."

The non-Retina MBP 13 is another issue, but that's not all there is to the Apple lineup. The MBA 13, the rMBP 13, and the iMac are all very reasonably priced given the specs, materials, and design (thinness costs money to implement) involved.

But R&D is generally done by R&D departments or by power users, not by casual end-users like teen girls who just want a laptop for Facebook and YouTube.

And if you had said "we can only afford a $500 laptop and Apple doesn't make those," instead of complaining about an "Apple tax" or suggesting that all Apple laptops have prices that their hardware doesn't warrant, I never would have disagreed with you :)

I would put an SSD in after the fact, as well as install Windows 7. And with a standard MacBook display, it's 1280x800 resolution did compare to the standard budget laptop's resolution of 1366x768. Everything else is just paper clips.

Yes, most MacBooks has superior specs right out of the box, but if one is only going to be using the notebook for "casual browsing" (for lack of a better word), then you're just paying for extras you really didn't need. I consider that Apple tax. Paying for extras like that is just as bad as paying for style. I consider a unibody design more style than function...And I know I am dead wrong about that.

It's like buying an Alienware just because it's an Alienware...And for its high specs, of course. The big pet peeve for me is getting what you need/want versus getting what others say your should get. It drives me nuts when I see someone buy a Galaxy Note 3 when they have no use for it or how to enjoy it. But then again, it goes against my policy of trying new things. How will you know you don't like Swahili if you don't learn to speak it? :D

And, yes. At this point I know I am purposely looking for an argument. But given the horrendous day I've had, I'd rather argue with all of you get then with all these adult toddlers around me IRL.

iOS 8 just got widgets and third-party keyboards (including Swiftkey), and nobody's talking about it? This is huge. Derivative, certainly, but nevertheless huge. Combined with the larger-screened iPhone 6, I'm seriously considering switching to iOS from Android for my next phone.

I like the stock iOS keyboard, I hate Swiftkey, it's not as natural for me vs the traditional keyboard. On all my Android phones I turn it off and go back to the standard Android keyboard. The widgets are kinda cool, like in the status/news feed part of the menu.

My preferences are Swype > Swiftkey > Google's keyboard > Samsung's keyboard. But keyboard preferences are highly subjective; one size doesn't fit all. The most important thing is that Apple is finally giving people choice instead of making everyone use the same keyboard (particularly when it's a keyboard without Swype-style typing and without an accurate display of uppercase/lowercase as you're typing).

Only reason I jb'ed my old iPhone was to get a keyboard with a top number row.

Okay, time for folks to talk me into or out of getting an iPhone 6 instead of another Android flagship when I get a new phone mid-September. What I like about the iPhone is (1) aesthetic consistency throughout the device, something where Android (particularly Touchwizzed devices) can struggle, and (2) its widespread use in the white-collar world means good developer support for work-related stuff. And my two serious objections to the iPhone (small screen and no Swype keyboard) are going away this fall. However, a couple questions:

    (1) How do I transfer photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC? I have a several different devices with cameras, so I want to manually create a folder and manually dump photos from my phone each time I transfer photos, because that ensures consistent records with how I transfer my digital camera photos and my wife's phone's photos. Is iTunes going to automatically create some sync folder and shove my stuff into there (perhaps even in some sort of proprietary format like iPhoto uses), or can I still choose where the photos are saved each time I transfer them off the phone?

    (2) I am extremely dependent on Business Calendar Pro's agenda view (which isn't just the agenda for the next 48 hours or something, but shows every appointment I have on my Google Calendar for months to come). I've heard inconsistent things online about whether iOS currently even has an agenda view for its calendar, and how good it is. Does iOS's calendar do what I want, and if not, is it possible to install a third-party calendar and set it as the default calendar app for the phone?

A lot of the ones I have seen before only use the port for support. That one at least offers a little piece on the back. Cool idea but it seems like it would be easy to mess up your port with it..

I don't really get it.. Have to use the crown on the side to navigate is what I'm seeing.. who's idea was that?

edit: it still accepts touch input for some stuff but other stuff is controlled only by the crown and button?

Reminiscent of the old BlackBerrys. This is why Google developed Android wear. So the wearable devices aren't half baked on the software side.

probably would have been easier to figure out from the live stream but I couldn't get it to pull up.. It seems the crown is used for zooming in/out on stuff and other basic navigation.. you can still swipe and do a lot by touch. It also has NFC to go with their new iWallet or whatever they're calling it. Wireless charging but no real mention of battery life.. Three different models to choose from "Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport (that adds a 60 percent stronger alloy case that's still light and durable), and Apple Watch Edition (which is made from 18k gold)".

I like how they bashed Android Wear for using a swipe-based interface because that "hides" the screen, yet half the interactions with the iWatch involved...swipes.

The crown reminds me of the original iPod's clickwheel. Nostalgic? Yes. Modern? Not so much.

iPhone 6 Plus versus Galaxy Note 4 is an interesting comparison in priorities. The iPhone 6 Plus wins in terms of thinness--probably the thinnest phablet ever by far. The Galaxy Note 4 offers far more base storage (32 gb plus microSD instead of 16 gb), a bigger battery, a larger and higher-resolution screen, and phablet-oriented multitasking (both split-screen and windowed). I can't imagine many phablet shoppers value thinness over the points where the Note 4 excels, but maybe I'm wrong.

I'm not trying to start an iOS versus Android debate, but I think Apple missed the boat with the iPhone 6 Plus. I wanted to see a bigger battery, more storage, and phablet-specific software features, and gladly would have given up a couple millimeters in thickness to achieve that.

I'm not sold on the Moto 360 due to the ancient SoC and the godawful battery life. My favorite smartwatch right now is the Snapdragon 400-powered LG G Watch R.

The 360 got eviscerated by ArsTechnica in their hands-on review for its' 12-hour battery life and its Texas Instruments OMAP 3, which killed both performance (lots of stuttering) and battery life (can't make it through a full day). The LG G Watch R should absolutely run circles around it on both fronts thanks to the Snapdragon 400.

The LG G Watch R has a truly round screen, unlike the Moto 360. One of the many reasons it's a vastly superior device for anyone interested in a round smartwatch.

I'm 90% likely to stay with Android when I get a new phone this month, but the new iPhones have given me a bit of pause. Adding bigger screens and third-party keyboards solves my two biggest gripes with the iPhone, and Apple consistently tends to give good-quality pictures and videos from their cameras (without getting caught in the megapixel wars that just make images obnoxiously large), which is a big selling point for me. Also, iOS still has better developer support than Android. I'm probably going to get the Galaxy Note 4, but just so see how the other half lives, a coworker just preordered an iPhone 6 Plus and I'm going to play with that when it arrives.

I'm hearing both online and in-person that you can preorder an iPhone 6 and get it on the release date, but iPhone 6 Plus preorders are now going to result in delivery several weeks out. Either they had an exceptionally low supply of iPhone 6 Plusses at first (manufacturing shortfalls) or there's a ton of demand out there for an iPhone phablet.

I'm not a fan of Play Store. If the Apple App Store feels like shopping at a nice shopping mall, the Play Store feels like shopping at TJ Maxx or an "outlet" store. And the Amazon App Store, the main alternative store to Play for Android devices, is even worse (it's like poppin' tags at a thrift shop). I like Android overall, but there's no question that's a weak spot in the Android experience.

and if you are stuck on apple logo, just do a restart (home + sleep/wake button). if that doesn't work restoring via recovery mode is your only option, article is ht1808
