i'm waiting for my 2096 to come in the mail (hopefully next week). and im wondering how hard is it for me to setup a dual boot with linux and the vista 64 that i ordered already on it? i would say that i'm moderately computer literate. i'm not dumb, but im not really up to date anymore. what type of linux should i install considering the machine and that it is my first experiment with linux?

i believe the best linux distro to get familiar with (unless youve tried linux before) is ubuntu: www.ubuntu.com get yourself a livecd from there and try it out- boot off of a livecd and you can try out the operating system without installing it.
dual booting isn't that difficult, it may be tricky the first time but its worth it. the livecd (and the installer) come with a partitioner built in so you can shrink vista and install ubuntu on the extra space. -

thanks cheese,
im looking forward to trying this out when i get my computer. -

Thx dude. -
Does anyone know why my screen randomly goes drak, even when I have it on high performance, my battery is fully charged and I'm using the AC adapter...?
I try brightening it using the function keys but it won't go any brighter....
The screen goes to the brightness that would be the lowest or second lowest brightness setting (when it is functioning properly).
To fix it, I have to go the NVidia control pannel, display settings, and click on Restore defaults, (the settings remain the same, but the screen becomes bright again).
Does anyone know what's causing my screen to go dark, and how I can fix it? -

I ordered mine two days ago from powernotebooks. Originally I was going to get it from xotic, but after I applied the student discount powernotebooks was slightly cheaper.
However when I called I was informed that they no longer offered a student discount. I'm a non-confrontational person, so I didn't say anything, but I should've gotten it from xotic -
Glad to hear some one else plans to dual boot Vista 64 and Ubuntu! I'm gonna do that when I recieve mine too! (Should be next week) Let me know when/if you do it, how to do it, how it runs and stuff.
I will do the same -

Hi everyone, I just got my sager 2096 and I have to say that it looks way better than it does on the pictures.
However, I noticed that my GPU temperatures seem to be unusually high, 71 degrees Celsius currently at idle. I looked at other temps that people posted, and they seem to be much lower, in the 50's. So what do you guys think? Is this normal? -
It could be because of your room temp. My gpu's idling at 66 right now. Lowest it gets is 60.
-
@Amaracuracuf
yea im gonna be using ubuntu aswell... but i will be triple booting with Vista Home Premium 64-bit, Ubuntu and Mac OSX (w/ iATKOS) will let you know how it goes
@voodoo89
you cannot compare temps with other people because temps are based off your room temp. your room temps are higher your temps will be idle and vice versa. -

To make you feel better, neither Xoticpc nor PowerNotebooks.com offered a student discount on the Sager NP2096, and at this time the student discount promotion has ended on all models. -
ZOMG the waiting game is hard =( like 1.5 weeks left
-
Does anyone else have any ideas?
Any help would be appreciated. -
Hey guys, got a couple of questions before I can order this laptop:
I've been having quite a bit of issues with the Asus G50 keyboard with it missing keys so I have to type very slow and hard for it to recognize my keys. How is the keyboard in the 2096?
My second question, I'm curious about the overall size of the notebook. I've seen the dimensions but as my G50 nicely taught me, your notebook can be a lot bigger than the reported dimensions. What do you think of its portability and how easy is it to carry this thing around every day to class?
Also, what resolution are you guys playing Crysis at? -
-
Well, it is much bigger than the 12 inch that I used before but it is light enough and not to thick to carry. It will work well to carry it around.
-
I did put in Vista x64 Ultimate on it and it is working ok but not great, the wireless off/on button fn+F2 doesn't work (have installed the drivers from the driver CD) and the green charger software doesn't work either.
btw do anyone know how to get the batterymeter in vista to show minutes left? -
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does an HDMI cable come with the NP2096 or do we have to purchase one seperately? Thanks.
-
no hdmi came with mine
-
Mine will be sent on Monday, can't wait to have it.
-
ok i downloaded the alps touchpad and installed it but i still dont know how to disable the touch pad. can anyone help me?
also what does [fn] + [F3] do, and is there a way to switch the fn button with the ctrl button? -
-
mmm ok but more importantly do you know the answer to my other 2 questions? typing becomes very annoying because my palm always touches the touch pad. also what does the button next to the power button do?
-
-
Just got my NP2096! Other than having to reinstall vista because of a bad factory install, the laptop is great.
I thought you guys might like to know that I found a version of ALPS touchpad drivers that allows touchpad scrolling on this laptop:
http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R165805&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=223707
This driver is for Vista x64, and I have confirmed it works. Can scroll on the right side vertically and horizontally along the bottom. Also allows for disabling tap to click and some other settings I didn't really try. Seems pretty customizable. It is for Dell touchpads but they are generic ALPS touchpads anyway. -

For some reason the only way I could get ALPS drivers on this laptop was through the driver downloads on Dell's support site. The drivers from softpedia all give me the not a valid win32 application error. Besides, I think only the Dell version lets you scroll with the touchpad. Correct me if I am wrong. -
Sweet deal guys! So IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE SCROLLING ON THE TOUCHPAD! thats one more CON that no longer applies!
Hear that Sphinx?
(Phase 2) just a few more days... -
guys is it worth taking the 3 year warranty on this lappy?
3 year sager warranty like +149$
and what is the 4GB turbo user pinning in your laptop amaracuracuf? Gain anything from that? -
http://www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/turbomemory/
Check this out, watch the video on this page.
There aren't reviews or anything on it yet cuz its pretty new BUT it looks pretty sweet... -
-
Now if I can only fix my screen issue (more of an inconvinience reaaly) then I'll be really happy....but overall, I'm really liking this laptop.
I maxed out Battlefield 2, and it was awesome...didn't even get that hot actually. -
its only your notebook that have that screen problem? or does everyone has something annoying like that?
-
Can someone please help me out with these questions? Much appreciated.

If someone could please measure the exact width of this notebook that would be great...I'd like to know if it's bigger than the reported dimensions. Thanks!
-
-
I must say the scrolling is rather jerky though, nothing like as smooth as the Synaptic driver on my old laptop. -
-
The size is very important to me, this looks good so I think I'll take it. -
-
I just got notice im at phase 4!!!...even though they delayed it, it still got shipped 8 days after ordering...thanks xotic
