^^ Very true. Also, the cooling is just crazy robust, indubitably the best cooling you can find in a laptop. I also like the fact that you can upgrade the screen (and there's a IPS RGBLED panel on the market that fits it ;)).

Only problem is, that panel will run half the price of the laptop itself, hehe. But at least the option does exist.

Nope, 'cause it's not available for sale. You can only get it directly from the screen manufacturer and unless you have a few millions to grab a huge batch, they won't even consider selling it to you, hehe. Still, you can find it in certain mobile workstations (Dell/HP) and I'm sure, eventually, some odd ebay sellers will have them...

It is too early to answer this because there aren't any testing units distributed yet. We will know more in about a week.

The spec may change when the jump to the newer GPUs occurs. On the desktop side of things, AMD is hoping that the high-end 7000 series cards spark the standardization of PCI-E 3.0. That may happen with mobile GPUs just to keep the standard across all form factors. We'll have to wait and see though because Nvidia controls the MXM standard.

Personally, I'm worried that early adopters may get hosed on the MXM slot if the standard changes. To wait or not to wait? That is the question.

Also: Early testing units sent out next week? Sweet! One of you very nice resellers should post prolonged videos of the P270WM! Please.

I almost pulled the trigger on an x7200 a few weeks ago, but what kept me from doing it was the lack of a backlit keyboard. I realize this is a minor thing, but its something I have wanted.

Clevo/Sager should consider adding one thing to this model if it isn't already there, and that is HDMI input port. Again, this isn't a big thing, but its one more thing that could help them compete with Alienware. Personally, looking at the specs this laptop should blow away anything that Alienware can do, but some people like the fancy cases. I don't really care what the case looks like as long as the laptop can do everything I want it to do, and has everything I want it to have.

I prefer having a not-fancy case. My room is a not some kind of disco xD It looks cool of course, but it gets annoying after some time, I suppose.

Furthermore, when you compare specs, you will see that you pay a lot just for the brand @ Alienware.

Is it possible to deactivate the keyboard lights, if you dont need them (daylight)?

From a picture that DXG posted in the discussion thread, yes there is a FN key combo to disable the backlighting of the keyboard.

p270's xtu...........cant tweak bclk, and no voltage control(voltage may automatically controlled by system)
so i think oc will depends on "turbo boost (short) power max and core current limit" (max tb ratio is just limit max ratio, true tb ratio we get depends on above
hope another version update will give more tweaking options :)

if you don't like disco lights - turn them off ;)

It's confusing when you say so, when it's not true. in most cases you can get a better price on AW nowadays on similar configs. There are always special deals available @Dell. Research.

Now, that is yet to be seen. GPU wise there is no difference between the x7200, NP8180, AW M18x and NP9270. All 4 have 2x580M max, so you can expect similar performance there. If it's of any indication, the M18x holds the record for GPU benchmarks at this time.

CPU wise this notebook should be a monster but the question remains, will it be possible to reach a stable overclock on it or not. I'm very interested to see how far it can be pushed as I might pull the trigger if it "blows away" my M18x.

yeah, XTU will help only if the BIOS is unlocked and the amps and volts can be changed. If Clevo locks it again,... :(

In regards to "Research"... Agreed. I don't want to re-visit the discussion just a few pages back, but I would say my experience is closer to Arrows' post. But deals can be found, and people should really be on the lookout for them. However, one also needs to be wary of special sales, and need to look at the fine details in ALL cases. In some cases, you end up w/ less RAM, slower (5400RPM HDDs), or lesser WiFi cards (Intel 6200). Ppl really need to look at *all* components to compare apples to apples.

However, the *real question* is what will the pricing of the P270WM going to be like? Around the same as the x7200? More? In the end, I'll guess we'll find out in about 7 days.

Take an entry-level config of an X7200, and add about $300 to $400 (at least) for an entry-level config P270WM.

All true regarding *all components *. On a side note, I'd always recommend getting the most basic RAM/HDD and upgrade yourself, the best option. I never, ever, even consider getting those with the system. But for those users who are not willing to mess with the system, your advice is very important. +1 rep

^^ Exactly. I wouldn't be surprised to see the same or even lower price

One place that clevos tend to beat Alienware is the upgrade pricing for ram and HDDs, I also follow Aikimox's advice and get the minimum with Dell and upgrade myself. With the clevo resellers though the pricing on those upgrades is usually much more fair and representative of the market price for such parts.

A-Ha!! That *exactly* explains why Aikimox's claims seemed incorrect to me. I've always been one to customize in order to get the correct H/W needed for my development needs. I don't think I've ever purchased the "standard" or "base" configs.

Plus, I've never found I've needed to add components after a purchase over the 8+ yrs of using Sager/Clevo because hardware add-ons by resellers/builders have always been within reason of NewEgg, ZipZoomFly (when the existed), CDW, etc.

+1 Rep for helping me see.

Ya with Alienware/Dell....there are only a few things I pay them to upgrade...(things that I can't do myself - at least not easily, also things you typically want under warranty)

    -Screen
    -GPUs
    -CPU
-Blu Ray (since changing out slot-load drives is very not fun)

Other than that I take care of it myself (Ram, HDD, SSD, WiFi, etc)

If I had the money for something like this, I'd surely get it, but this is retarded...

Even as a person who's forever for the laptop, I have to draw the line somewhere... eeeeeven though I'm probably a hypocrite... Bout to drop $2500 on an alienware from a friend. :D

Yikes....it is a fat little thing isn't it......I am curious to see how the CPU does in this package, since we already know what the GPUs are capable of. Type B FireWire is nice though......antiquated but nice.....

Makes a DVI port on a laptop look small.....haha

Does the bios allow software based fan control? The huge thing I love about my P180HM is the "silence fan button" and I don't see a touch button for that on it.

In all fairness....the 2960xm is lower clocked at stock (an important distinction as it is easily overclocked at least in the M18x) and uses less than half the power. It also has that IGP which can be used to enable about 5 hours of battery life ;)

The M18x can run a 2920xm or 2960xm at the exact same speeds as the Clevo can run the 3960x or 3930k and will get identical performance unless all 6 cores (12 threads) are being utilized. Core for Core and clock for clock their performance is identical

With SB it is pretty safe to say that the laptop and desktop CPUs are comparable in performance

And to add, even 6 vs 4 cores the question is open. It depends on how far can the 3960X be pushed in the Clevo. If there's no stable overclock, then the 29x0XM will be the winner, even in the muti-threaded apps. Still, let's wait till the first real benches.

And just to show you what I mean, here you go, my 2960XM, first at stock clocks:

    And now, @4.5ghz. :

Now look at that list and compare it to the 990X/995X/etc ;) And my beast can still be pushed by 500-700MHz on every core. I hope, Johnksss can post his scores at higher clocks.

3 out of 4 should be SATA 3.0.

LOL, I thought I am extreme enough about the keyboard by dropping P150HM just because of the retarded layout. This P270WM layout is much better, still not very friendly especially the 4 arrow keys are too close to other keys.

I may not choose P270WM because of the size and weight, i need to bring it around daily. I will wait for 15.6" Ivy Bridge in next 4 months or so.

    Intel® X79 Express Chipset

The x79 chipset supports up to 2 SATA III (6Gbps) and 4 SATA II (3Gbps). I don't see it on any spec posted so far, but if I were a bettin' man, I would say of the 4 drive bays, 2 Sata III and 2 SATA II.

Good find! So, the ideal setup is 2 SSDs in RAID + storage HDD.

Or 2 SATA III SSDs plus 2 SATA II HDDs. Depends if you want an external optical drive or not.

Will you be overclocking the CPU as well as 2 GPUs? If not, there's no need. If so, do you know about the parallel PSU solution used in the x7200? My guess is since it looks like the same 300W power supply found in the x7200, you may have the same solution in this model as well. (sigh) Time will tell if this is correct.

On a brighter note, does the i7-3960X draw less power than an i7-990X? If so, perhaps one can still push above stock clocks and stay under the 330W-350Ws that ends up tripping the PSU's safety feature.

Here they claim it draws less when idle but more when pushed and OC'ed.
