that will save me a few bucks when i get around to upgrading the slot. thanks!

Nvme does not require pci-e 3.0, the speeds are capped at 4x 2.0 and also the limit of the cpu to chipset interconnect at 1.7GB/Sec.
-
That's what I meant with all the "max" speed mentions I had in there. Thanks for making it clearer though and educating me on the limitations CPU-side.
-
do you think the bios will get updated to boot from a NVMe or is it already supported?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Due to the rarity of drives and lack of testing i'm not sure.

i'll probably just avoid the NVMe drive and stick with the AHCI variant of the drive and see how that works out. i'll be sure to report back on performance. thanks for the info. once i receive it, i will post a review of how well it handles 3 virts running at once all communicating with each other through my cisco lab. thanks for the info!

Be aware that for small files it makes little difference having the extra bandwidth as the controller can't use it.

The more I look at this laptop, the more it just seems like an exact copy of the 15" model with a larger screen.
It looks like they didn't do a whole lot with the extra space afforded by the larger chassis. They even used the same keyboard, rather than utilizing the extra space to put a full-sized one in.
Any thoughts? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Every one does that due to costs. The 17 inch models don't sell enough to dedicate new motherboards to.

**UPDATE** so i've tortured the laptop a bit. right now i'm running win 10, with a dew different virts loaded onto virtualbox. (debian, bsd, and solaris) it handles it all pretty well. as far as specs go this machine makes for an excellent work station. once i have finished fully upgrading the ram, the pcie m2 slot, and an extra ssd in the sata port i believe this laptop should serve me well for some years to come.
now onto the negatives. the right shift key and the backspace key are loose and wiggly. (<-- official term) you can literally hear a sound from the keys that is completely different than the rest of the keys. so i contacted lpc for a warranty replacement for the keyboard. they said "NO charge" on warranty stuff and i was sent a form from Sager asking for all the usual info (address, card number, shipping, blah blah blah). i got back to lpc and told them i had selected overnight air, and then i was told "only 3 day shipping is free".
so i asked if there was a way to fix it because i am not going to be charged for warranty stuff on a laptop that is literally 3 weeks old. no response in any way. i called, no one is available. then i check my bank account this morning and guess what? not one but 2 charges from Sager. one for the cost of the keyboard and one for the cost of the overnight air shipping.
**blatant sarcasm** woot **end blatant sarcasm**
so i call Sager and ask them about what is going on and they have no clue and will call me back when they figure it out. i try lpc again and you'll never guess, no answer. i have to say at this point lpc sucks at customer service and i do not recommend them to anyone.
so in conclusion, nice laptop with a couple defective keys. just don't get it from lpc as they seem to be not very interested in post sale customer support. -
I'm looking to replace my np930 (i7 3630qm / 7970) for a lighter, more mobile machine, while still being able to run games and AI/PS without any problems. From the looks of it the 8672 checks all those boxes. It looks like the 8672 (i7 4720 / gtx 980M) will outperform the 9370 in all aspects with those configuration.
While owning a sager has been nothing but pleasant, I just wanted to make sure that this chassis/model retains the same quality. Would that be a fair assessment?
Also, how does anyone use this laptop for light video editing / gaming? what is your take?
thanks! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes the quality of that chassis is even a tiny bit better.
The only thing to consider if you want to really hammer the CPU the 9773/ZM with the desktop CPU can keep the CPU at higher turbos for longer.Riktar likes this. -

Placed an order for the 8672-S! now the wait begins...

I have an external SSD (250 Samsung 840 pro) and 1 TB HDD i use for storage I was going to try and install the 840 Pro SSD for Adobe CS. I was told that you can't fit 1 hdd and 1 ssd, at least not from sager, but there might be a way to DIY.
Anyone know? -
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Congrats on getting the new computer.
Unfortunately on that model, with the way the drive bay is set up, you can only get a 9.5mm HDD, or the 7mm SSD(s) in there, but not both. You could put in the 840 pro, but would need to remove the HDD. Maybe convert the HDD to an external drive with an enclosure?Riktar likes this. -
Yeah, forgot to ask that during our conversation earlier today (p37x vs 8672s pro / con).
I was told there might be some way around it... here's to hoping. -

I am pretty sure at least one user of the 15" model achieved this, by removing the ssd from it enclosure.

Yeah, that might be a little risky to try. Hopefully someone here might have tried that in general, or maybe with that model specifically?
-
I think i found it. A bit risky is an understatement lol. it looks like you have to take out the ssd out the case and slip it under and then secure it.

Hi all, I'm planning on purchasing a new laptop for software development, cyber security research, web surfing, and watching movies (I don't play games). I have been really thinking about getting this laptop due to the high end components it has and it's portability (Current laptop is 17inch weighs about 12lbs). Can anyone tell me how hot this laptop gets? Can you use it on your lap or does it get to hot? Also, I've been hearing mixed reviews on the battery life. Is it possible to have an average of 3-4hrs when running applications such as Visual Studio, Eclipse, Intel XDK, VMWare?
-
If you want to fit a SSD + HDD in the 2.5" bays, you'll need to stick to a 5400rpm 1TB HDD, as all the 7200rpm 1TB drives I know of are 9.5mm, while the 5400rpm 1TB can be found in the 7mm format.
You can gerry-rig it by removing the SSD from its casing, but personally, I'd rather stick to a 5400rpm than go through all that.Riktar likes this. -
Oh yeah, it looks like it's going to be a fun endeavor lol. I'm trying to maximize the use of the components i already have. I have very little knowledge of the m.2 drives as this will be the first laptop i have with this type of drives (comes with a 250gb already). I need to do a bit more research on the various configurations. (i.e. if i add another 250gb M.2 would i display 2 drives or could i combined them into 1 500gb drive, or if i get a 500gb m.2 will there be compatibility issues)
I foresee fun times ahead either way. -
Still, that a machine this thin manages to give you room for four drives is still impressive.Riktar likes this. -
If you configure two 250gb m.2 in raid wouldn't display 1 250gb or 1 500gb drive?

Depend on raid setting, 0 would be 500, 1 will be 256...
Edit: too slow!Riktar likes this. -
That sounds awesome... and slightly scary lol.
Just saw this and it sounds pretty straightforward.
How frequently do these m.2 drives fail? I mean the OS will be installed on the m.2 and Adobe CS, i usually store games and media on the HDD backup. -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
m.2 or any SSD hardware has been very reliable and stable, but just like any electronics there can be failure. Your plan to put the OS and other programs that will benefit on the SSD and other files and games on the HDD is the way to go.

that sounds like a plan!!
would it be best to keep both m.2 identical make/model or is mixing okay? -

Oh boy these Clevo Driver / BIOS's are a mess, I was just about to update to the latest BIOS and EC for my P670SG from the XMG website (P705) (BIOS 1.05.01), but after I download, the folder is named P671SG?
Is the latest BIOS update for the P670SG or not? First I heard of a P671SG.
I did not buy my P670SG from XMG btw. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It will have the same motherboard and slightly different chassis.

Last digit stands for the chassis finition, 0 for brushed and 1 for sandblasted, if I recall correctly.

Thanks all, I've updated to the latest BIOS and EC, no problems.

So my laptop is 2 days away (ETA on Thurs) and i'm trying to get all my ducks in row so i can get this up and running asap. I have Windows 8.1 on a usb stick and all the other programs ready to go.
I have a few questions regarding the OS and BIOS.
I have Win 10 my wife's dell inspiron 7348 laptop tablet hybrid and it runs fine but i'm reading a lot of driver compatibility issues for sagers (and other laptops including our DELL). Would you guys still recommend win 10 over 8.1?
Would you also recommended to flash a new (possibly latest) bios? or is the one it comes with the latest / works just fine? I'm not looking to overclock ...yet and wouldn't want to void any warranty...just yet lol.
I will be running it through benchmarks / prime95 / kombustor and test known problems (sticky keyboard / non responsive space bar) just to make sure everything is working fine and get my paranoid self some peace of mind. Any additional recommendations and/or tests just make sure it's all running as it should.
thanks! -

Flash a bios above stock, because stock is known to cause stutter in game.
Flashing to any official bios but more recent does not void warranty.Riktar likes this. -

So Windows 10 would be the way to go then? any noticeable benefits via-a-vis performance / gaming? My experience with it has been primarily with touch screen / browsing chrome.

If it's shipping with 7 stay on that for a while there is no rush just now (while the free upgrade is in place for the initial year), if buying an OS now jumping on 10 means you wont have to migrate later.
-
I'm currently on 8.1. It's not shipping with any os. It will automatically prompt me for free upgrade to 10 but after reading that I'm kind hesitant now..

Hi Guys,
I'm practically new in this forum. I own a P670SE (Sager branded) with BIOS version 1.03.05RLS1 dated 12/18/2014 for 7 months just asking for the temps. My Idle cpu temp is at 60-70 degree Celsius and my GPU is at 60-70 Degrees Celsius on Intel and 40-50 Nvidia says the gpuz and coretemp. Is this normal or too hot if its hot what can do? Do i need to repaste? Thanks!Last edited: Aug 19, 2015 -
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
That does sound high for idle temps, and might be worth re-pasting. I would also check using HWInfo or MSI Afterburner, as those seem to be pretty accurate in temps. Some programs can be off a little bit on that.
What are your temps under load though? That would be concerning to look at if your idle temps are that high. When it is at that temp, is there any programs running in the background like antivirus or backup programs that might be causing the system to run a little harder? -
Hi pat, i havent benchmarked it to the extent of 100% load but what i saw when i run DA inquisition at ultra settings my temps are intel hd at around 85-91 nvidia at 60 and my cpu at around 86-92 when i force 100% the fan i think its around 80-90% load i assume.
Thats why im worried I even asked the sager rep for some bios update i thought it might help. Any paste suggestions and method on how to paste? Im quite new on repasting laptop gpu and cpu been on a desktop until lately. As for background apps I have literally nothing on background. Except windows defender.Last edited: Aug 19, 2015 -

VERY thin line about 2/3rds of the length of the CPU centered on the middle of IC diamond should sort you. The CPU temps will be high under load, that's just Haswell.
