RMAs are actually very expensive so yes we certainly test every machine before it ships and I would have thought HID do too but shipping can be a harsh enough process (vibration and temperature swings) to bring out things that are hard to catch in the shop.

Intel xtu can be used to undervolt the cpu with no problems with the bios ver in mine.
I'm running 3200mhz on the memory. That's the only feature unlocked in bios overclock menu.
You can checkout their website at sagernotebook.com
Learning how to use MSI afterburner was a pita, but the results are down right awesome.
I have this thing fairly well tuned now and I'm happy with the results.
I did manage to track down and fix an intermittent memory leak that was hammering core #6 with
% usage. It turned out to be an out of date network driver.
Tonight I plan on testing with some game and seeingif all this has made a difference while gaming with fan noise.

I compared the benchmarks for this machine out of the box from sager to tuned to the way I have it now. I figured i'd give you guys the summary.
The default had a -70 undervolt applied at the time. It was the first thing I did so there are no Benchmarks before it. Keep in mind these are all combined scores not just graphics for comparison purposes
Performance Mode Max Fans -70 undervolt
TimeSpy 8,561 Average CPU 80C/GPU 76C
Port Royal 4,888 Average GPU 71C
CinebenchR20 3,218
Final Tune
Performance Mode Max Fans -100 millivolt undervolt on CPU
Volt/Frequency Tune on GPU w -119 millivolt on GPU
TimeSpy 9,139 Average CPU 86C/GPU 63C
Port Royal 5,121 Average GPU 68C
CinebenchR20 3,848
Firestrike 20,410 Average CPU 77C/GPU 61C
Tuning the GPU made a huge difference for this laptop. With the numbers I'm seeing now it easily beats all 2080 max-q variants and comes very close to 2080 mobile performance.ChrisHW likes this. -
I ordered one of these from Gentechpc a few weeks ago. It should hopefully be here soon, and I am really looking forward to getting a chance to play around with it. I've seen you guys mention undervolting, how hard is it for someone with no experience doing something like that?
-
I am I the same boat.
What's your order status and when was placed?
Mine is "Pending Shipment" placed 06/09/2020.
Thanks!!Sandwitches likes this. -
6/13. Mine is still processing, but if yours is pending shipment mines probably not TOO far behind.
-
The thing I struggle with the most is who to order from I see good reviews from all the clevo resellers and a few bad.

I made my order on 6/9 and it is still processing.
I emailed GenTechPC on 6/15 and they replied less than an hour later on that day saying it should ship in two weeks.
This was their reply.

There's a bunch of guides on how to do it. It's really not hard. I use Intel xtu and it's a slider bar. If you go too far under on voltage the laptop will just shut off. Reboot and it'll tell u it had an unknown error but it back at it's stock setting. Some people say to go until it shuts down then back off from there. Once u have a nice setting you need to test it under load. Intel xtu has a stress test feature. I run the setting for 5 minutes. Then do a day of normal laptop usage. If it crashes at any time your setting is too aggressive. I started with a -70 millivolt setting as a comfy start. I think -120 was my hard crash limit and settled in at -100 millivolt as my happy place. My last laptop was happy at -70. -80 was unstable. I was surprised by how much an 8 core chip was able to be reduced compared to my old 4 core.
If you have a machine from HID with the unlocked bios you have to make the change in the bios. I believe it doesn't allow software modifications to cpu chip voltage.

Haha that's a good problem to have. The very first sager I ordered was from mtech year ago. When I got it is had a sticker over the sager logo that said mtech. When I dropped it and broke the hinge and screen out of warranty sager was the one who repaired it and sent it back. Since then I've bought direct from Sager.
Xotic I use as a comparison site all the time since they have different models
.
HIDevolutions prices are usually too high for me. They do use custom bios though and tend to give you higher performance, but more heat and more instability can be a trade off.

Figured I'd ask if either of your statuses changed further today or not?
-
Thinking of buying this from either Sagernotebook's site or GentechPC. Are there any big cons to this laptop that I should know? I plan to undervolt the CPU when I receive it to reduce thermals a bit but I did have someone tell me that this model possibly suffocates itself when on a flat surface and I'm not a fan of having to carry around a stand for it to not constantly overheat. It is between this and an MSI GE75 which I have heard have some poor hinges that are prone to breaking. also, how is the keyboard? does it feel sturdy and responsive?
-
I'm happy with mine. Fan noise is loud but the newer fans do a great job of moving air. Using a 3 fan cooler pad only dropped temps 1C for me. Airflow is not a problem. Undervolting is a great idea
Sent from my moto g(7) using Tapatalk -
Loud fans are kinda to be expected by gaming laptops these days aren't they?
That reminds me though, how is the audio on this beast? -
Nope still processing.
-
I know on the 17.3" version of this Sager laptop people complained not about how loud the fans were but how annoying the high pitched whining sound was. Apparently the shape of the chassis near the vents causes this sound.
Not sure if the 15.6" version has this issue. -
Yeah my 17 has a high frequency whistle, but I think it's more from fan blade design then from vents. One user took the bottom case off and ran it that way with the same sound. I'm ok w the sound. I still manage to get emersed when gaming on it and it's not present under surfing conditions. If you do any kind of video editing it could be annoying.

So if you order direct from sager notebook is there still the same delays as ordering from say gentech or xotic
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I ordered mine Friday May 8th. It shipped out that Monday and arrived for me by wed or Thursday. I paid for 3 day select. I'm based on the east coast and sager is California so it 5 day shipping otherwise. Not bad in my book during the covid crisis.

Not sure what a normal order time is from the other two.

As above is what you can expect from us.
-
Ah, well hopefully it isn't THAT bad. Does the whistle happen all the time or just during gaming?
-
Any heavy CPU load will ramp em up quick. Especially in performance mode. There is a 7 second 107w boost that drives the chip right up to it's thermal limit. Entertainnent mode limits the boost to 55W. Power saver limits the CPU to 15W and the GPU to 90W. Quiet limits CPU to 15W but gives u full power on gpu. It actually games well on that but will bog down under heavy CPU loads.

It's not a deal breaker for me. I knew going in that it was going to be hot and loud. It got a gorgeous screen, decent sound, and runs all my game buttery smooth. Sound is decently clear and loud for a laptop. I haven't bothered to test battery life yet. My biggest gripe with Sagers is their crappy battery sizes. I just use my wife's Ultrabook though if I need to be mobile

That's useful to know, thanks. I've been using a 2014 Acer for the last 6 years and biggest thing I've ever used it for was Ark on it's original release. I really don't know much about what I'm getting into here, but I'm looking forward to it.
-
How do you feel about the keyboard on this model does it feel sturdy? and you mentioned the system putting out a whistle-like noise it would be awesome if someone could upload a video/sound clip of the noise it puts out.Lzealot likes this.

Tough to quantify it cause the mic and your speakers will make for a different experience. It sounds like a mini jet engine running when it Ramps up. Best temps I can get are between 50-60 on gpu and 80sc on the GPU. I was hoping the low GPU temps would help back down the cpu but it had almost no effect.

Not yet, is pending shipment and processing.
I call them, they say it will be delivered next week. -
Does the np8378f2 laptop is the same chasis as the nh77ddw laptop and the inside.
-
The NH77DDW Clevo is the NP7877DW Sager
Slightly different chasis than the NP8378F2....very slightly. -
It looks thinner and the vents are different. I'm hoping someone posts a view of the heat sink and undercarriage.

The keyboard is good, but that's another personal item. My old machine had the chicklet styleand this one has a nicer feel with a bit more travel. The right side shift key is getting me in trouble because it's shorter to give u a full size keyboard w number pad. Im having a bit of trouble getting myself to align on it. Every once in awhile I key in a bunch of gibberish. Since most of what I type is gibberish anyway it hasn't affected quality too much
.

Is your CPU still in the 80s for temps? I haven't found a way to get the temps down. I've set a more aggressive fan profile and it still heads up to low 80s. GPU temp lowering hasn't made a difference. I thought it would free up some more thermal room.
Sent from my moto g(7) using Tapatalk -
Just thought I'd ask: What kind of games are you trying with it?
-
Transport fever 2 which thermal throttles. It uses all cores though.
Ark, supreme commander forged alliance (uses multiple cores but is horrible at it) bf4, deep rock glactic, 3d mark benchmarks.
Gaming temps are averaging 83C on CPU and 61-71C on the GPU. Boost clocks for the GPU are a steady 1850mhz. Transport 2 concerns me a bit. I'm not a fan of continuous 91C temps on the cpu. Id have no problems with peaking in the 80s, but like to see it average high 70s.
I might repaste one more time. I ordered a fresh tube of kryonaut. My last one only had a tiny bit left and was over a year old.
Sent from my moto g(7) using Tapatalk -
Only under a heavy game and since I really don't game anymore it's not an issue.
I can do some pretty hefty image manipulation in soft image, catia, lightwave, etc and have no thermal issues, usually under 55-60 with a good load.
Irony, I used to be a heavy gamer and played on several teams back in the day (hardocp, wsn, mitosis...a few I have forgotten).
Running a 085 undervolt and honestly nothing else but a few OS tweaks to keep running processes down, I
rarely ever hear the fans kick in and as I type this it's running 35-37 cpu (across the cores) and 0 gpu because it's running on the intel video.
Oh, I do pretty much keep it in entertainment mode since it seems a good compromise between power and heat.
There is definitely enough power to run most anything without having to "crank it up" hell, I haven't really found anything that it isn't able to rip thru with so called 'aplomb'. -
N2ishun does your nh77ddw laptop fan make a whistle sound ,lzealot says his laptop does.
-
Mine does not

Are most people getting the terrible cinebench results that the OP posted? 3200 seems pretty bad, have seen scores from the 15" variant and the Maingear Element 2 score over 4000 out of the box.
Specifically where did the people scoring 3200 or lower buy theirs?Last edited: Jun 29, 2020 -
The OP made a post later in the thread that had updated numbers:
IIRC, they got theirs from Sager directly.
At least 4 of us are still waiting for ours from Gentech, so once those start hitting we can get a bit of a wider range of samples.Last edited: Jun 29, 2020 -
Cinebench is highly sensitive to background processes. I could disable them to give you a max benchmark number but it's not a real world use number. Cinebench floats 400-800 points easily. I do seem to have a hot CPU chip in mine though my gpu is a cool little beast. Luck of the draw I guess.

I ordered the 15.6" version from Gentech on June 9th and I am still under processing for my order.
I emailed and got a reply from Gentech on June 15th and the guy said my laptop should ship out in 2 weeks so that would be today if true... -
Last week they told me mine should be shipped "this week". By this week, I mean last week, it wasn't. Hopefully it will be this week instead.
-
They told me this week as well.
So looking at it... The four of us who are waiting for the laptops atm ordered them within a 5 day period of each other:
8th: Nauzhror
9th: Ryvius, Lopezco
13th: Sandwitches
Hopefully things will work out and we'll get an update soon. Have you guys been using email or phone for your communication with them? -
I used email.
Their response on June 15th
-
I spoke to Ken via email.
-
I sent a reminder today. It is a shame those laptops ready and stuck!!
-
Hopefully you all get em soon. Patience was never my strong suit.

It's not mine either. I've typically gotten way less info in my emails back from Ken then some of the others, so it's been even more nerve grating.

I've passed on your concerns on this. Obviously the safety of staff is going to be a top priority.
