What do people think about the "metal brushed onyx housing"? I like the feel of the rubberized surface, but it seems to be a magnet for dust which would be a pain to keep clean.

Is the housing for the 3 new systems below correct?
    8130: Plastic?
    8150: Rubberized
    8170: Metal brushed onyx housing

Glad to finally see some real footage, have been waiting to see some real world images and videos.

Been looking to upgrade my 5797 - was going to go with the 8870 - but decided to wait as they weren't really worth the price.

Now the 8170 - worth the upgrade for sure. I also much prefer the metal onyx casing on the 8170 as compared to the rubber 8150 - much classier and stronger as well. The LED LCD also looks excellent - probably going to wait until the 6970 is available to put my order in.

Any ideas on the size of the power brick for this machine? I see the power connector on the laptop itself uses the same kind of connector found on the D901C. Although I kind of hope the brick isn't as massive.

They are all pretty much the same.

At 1333MHz 9-9-9-24. If you can find faster, hats off to you, but it probably won't be that noticeable of speed improvement.

What I'd love to know is how quiet this thing is when running office applications, and how good the keyboard is. I play some games (though not many), do a little graphics design, but I do a lot of writing (if it weren't for the few games and graphic design I wouldn't bother with something with this much power)

Anyone have any ideas on what cooler would run well with this laptop? I know the Cryo LX has the fans more towards the back end which seems to be where most of the vents are.

I didn't even notice the metal housing the first time I watched the video, I had to rewatch it after seeing your comments. That is a pleasant surprise. I much prefer the look and feel of the metal to the rubber of the 8150, especially around the touchpad area. It's all personal preference though...

I just ordered the NP8170-S1 yesterday (1/24/2011), I can't wait to get it!

Can anyone please point me to the right direction for a good laptop cooler? From the looks of it, the intake vents are located at the bottom of the laptop.

    Thanks in advance.

I haven't looked at it, but if it does have vents on the bottom,

the zalman NC-2000 does a fantastic job.

I dislike the brushed aluminum look on that prostar video. I like the rubberized look of the 8150 better. It's almost enough to steer me away from the 8170.

Why the 2820QM, though? It's like 5% faster than the 2720QM, at 2 x the price...

You guys wanting to know about coolers to get, this is Sager we are talking about. You won't need coolers.

I would suggest waiting till you get your units in and see what the temps are.

My laptop idles at around 50-51 (CPU). With my NC2000, it only goes down to 48. I use it more for the fact it tilts the machine up a few degrees, more than the actual cooling.

To prevent myself from upgrading again, I just decided to spring!

I don't know how the extra 2M L3 cache will play, and it was only about a 160ish upgrade from the 2720qm, and I decided to choose it.

I can understand wanting a fast CPU, but have you considered putting that $360 towards the 485M? 2630QM + 485M will demolish the faster CPU + 460M.

Here are the dimensions for the 8170 / P170HM. Compare with the sleeve to see if it fits.

    16.22" (w) x 10.87" (d) x 1.65"~1.79" (h)

    I sadly don't play games.........

I am going to see what the ATi has to offer, as the price they have up their sleeve seems to be pretty good.

I've decided that nvidia's premium prices are too much for me.. rather go the ATi way..

    i am also in dilemma

to settle for 2630qm+485m or 2820qm+470m? but i 2630qm to be weak it will be great if 2720qm+485m the diff between 2720qm and 2920xm is very minor but the total becomes 2000 + 100 to ship in malaysia i really hope intel slashes 100 on upgrade from 2630qm to 2720qm and nvidia slashes 150 on gtx 485m

The best combo for gaming is the Intel® i7-2630QM and the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M w/2.0GB GDDR5. Spend you money on the video card, not the processor.

If anyone is interested, here is the clocks for the sandy bridge. Why the i7-2820QM and up cost so much is beyond me.

or is the XM processors the same as far as OC in the bios while the QM required SetFsb?

Thanks for that! Now all I need to know is the overclocking capacity of the 2920XM on the 8170. I don't think it should even be offered on the 8150 if there's no way to overclock it there.

You can't overclock the QM at all. The XM can be apparently through software like ThrottleStop, I don't believe there is BIOS support.

Well, you might as well get the 2630QM and 460M. You do/will have the option to upgrade later if you find it's not enough for any future stuff you'll run. But from what you describe the 2630QM and 460m should be more than adequate.

If you are just a casual gamer like I am, you should opt for the 460m..

6970 is really a waiting game as there are no specific release dates of this card..

I've had a CF4870 in my m17x and did not play much games, at the time of purchase I was always thinking how gfx power would be awesome.

It ended up happening that I didn't use the m17x to half my intended potential. Go with the 460m if you don't plan to play demanding games, and you can use that money for something else..

I ended up paying more for CPU, people here said that was a bad move, but hey, it's our own machines, right? Get what you feel is the best upgrade for you, something fit for your usage.

I feel that you are as much a gamer as I am, which is that I don't buy these machines to play games on.. SC2, D3, all famous games so I will try them out, but not in max settings with 16xAA or something..

Go with your instincts on what you feel would suit you best. GFX cards are not everything, if you don't intend to use them a lot, you can get away from super GPU upgrades..

:D All in all, let it be a happy purchase!

460m is not suffice for running SC2 at 1080p on Ultra settings.

Might have to tweak some shadow settings or overclock like h**!)#&%)!@&%.

    :D Hope this helped.

Haha, no worries. SC2 at Ultra details are slick!

At least go for the 470m, and you will be able to OC it to decent levels, if you feel to bad about shelling out 500 for the 485m.

    The ultimate waiting game :D

I need a laptop for school soon, so I just went ahead with the 460m,

and have plans to just sell it when the 6970m comes out for an easy upgrade.

I probably will lose about $100? but I will have a laptop till then.. so I chose this way.. :D

Same here, I'm either playing games, or working on the laptop (standard office applications, encoding/decoding, etc). A decent cpu and gpu is a must!

I've learnt time and time again that going cheap and saving money on the cpu and gpu has cost me dearly. Upgrades won't be cheap either because I'd have no one to sell the cpu or gpu after.
