Curious...How much are you going to try to get for your 7811FX? I am trying to sell mine on CL currently, with the CPU upgraded to an X9100, and getting no bites...

Haven't posted it yet... waiting until my new one gets here to move some stuff off. Still debating whether to post it or just give it to a family member that could use it.

Have you thought about using eBay?

    Thanks Htwingnut.

I'll definitly consider doing the same.

It seems one can buy the matte screen of the G73 for a mere 100$, i wish i could be certain it can be fitted on the NP8170.

Has anyone OC'ed their 2920 yet? I heard they can OC very well just on air cooling. I would not be surprised to see 4ghz!

I have the ASUS G73 and am considering moving to a Sager to get a more upgradable system. I notice there are no ATI options. Is this something that can be added later or would there be bios issues?

Also, are Sager systems as quiet as the G73? I don't want another loud system.

    Cheers,

Yes it has been announced a few days ago that 3 models will have the AMD Mobility Radeon 6970 . The Sager NP8170/Clevo P170HM, Sager NP8150/Clevo P170HM, and the Sager NP7280/Clevo x7200. The ETA at this moment is not known. Should be pretty soon... :)

    Good to see you again.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll wait then. Any thoughts on how quiet Sager systems are under load? I really like how silent the G73 is.

    Cheers,

We have never seen anything as quiet as the G73 and G53.

Don't get me wrong, the Sagers aren't that loud, but side by side the ASUS will win the quiet contest.

Thanks, how's service handled on the sager? There are authorized Asus service centers that are local. Is sager support 3 day mail in only?

Sager is in City of Industry, CA. They pay 3 Business Day shipping both ways.

ASUS service centers are worldwide, except for pretty weak coverage in South America, but some are certainly better than others. The one in Indiana is awful.

i see xoticpc have discounted the upgrade to gtx 470m from gtx 460m for 100usd in x7200 i really wish they do the same to sager np8170

i think its because of 6970m performance

ASUS has had a terrible reputation regarding customer service. From personal experience, I feel that they are super shady about things and clearly don't want to pay out their end's obligation when it comes to warranties (which is understandable but still...)

Which is exactly why I've used a local shop instead of sending it in. I know who worked on it and they know me. Looks like sager does all their own service. They are a much smaller company but I like their upgrade capability.

Sager is also less expensive than my other Asus replacement option, alienware.

    Cheers.

Just to let everyone know we can now do the P170HM with a Matte screen if you want it to be. I know this is a sometimes requested feature so we are bringing the screens in-stock to do that.

May I point out, that 1 x 4GB of OCZ is only $42 shipped?

Paying for 6GB or 8GB upgrades doesn't make much sense, as sticking with the default 4GB then buying more RAM yourself saves money and gives you more total RAM in the end.

The $45 used to upgrade to 6GB can be used to buy the $42 stick, giving you 8GB total (2 x 2GB default, 1 x 4GB). The $90 spent on the 8GB upgrade is enough to buy two 4GB sticks, giving you a total of 12GB (2 x 2GB default, 2 x 4GB), while saving $8.

    Just food for thought.

Woot! Thanks for the info mythlogic... +1. And thanks for your other info too. You're just making my decision that much harder now.

I started out with a budget of ~$1500. Now I'm considering over $800 worth of upgrades... lol.

Just a note regarding the shipping status of this model. Due to the overwhelming orders for the Sager NP8170, this with the fact that Clevo is not sending large quantities of these each week... there can be delays. Of course this is how it usually is when brand new technology comes out. Especially with the new 485M card. Orders will be fulfilled as quickly as possible in the order of received, placed orders... :)

It is becoming harder to find ExpressCard slots on newly released laptops. It seems the manufacturers believe that with USB 3.0 and eSATA ports the need for ExpressCard has diminished to a very small market which does not justify the cost of putting them in every laptop.

Roughly ($20?) how much can one save without having any memory in the machine? I would ask a reseller, but since I'm waiting for the 6970, I don't want to waste their time...I would prefer my memory was 4gb x # vs. 2gb x 2, then putting in another 4gb afterward.

I was looking forward in buying Clevo P170HM but I need ExpressCard option because I use a software that requires Serial port, currently I have a Dell laptop which I use PCMCIA card to have Serial port functionality but looking to upgrade, any suggestions looking for a laptop for everyday work and occasional game play which has express card option.

I'm not saying anything about ordering without any RAM. What I said was that paying them for the 2 x 4GB upgrade makes little sense to me, as you pay $90 for 8GB total, where just ordering with the 4GB allows you to spend that $90 on your own 8GB, to add to that default 4GB.

Even if you only want 4GB DIMMs, it still makes more sense to buy them yourself, because you can then sell the 2 x 2GB to recoup even more money.

My quote is correct. This has been confirmed by a senior engineer at Sager. The only issue is that the ODD bay will only support SATA II drive speeds, regardless of whether you install a SATA II or SATA III drive in the caddy.

There is a shipment arriving @ Sager this week as they are the NA Importer for Clevo. Sager prioritizes "Sager Branded" systems as first priority and will ship as soon as they are built and tested. Some of you first ones might have tracking # in your inbox this week. :)

    Mmmm, sexy. :D

I hope mine ships this week.

One thing that may seem minor but attracted me to this laptop as well is the fact that the optical drive is on the right hand side, most ports on the left. It drives me nuts when all the ports are on the right side, and being right handed, all the cables and stuff get in the way of the mouse.

Just bumped mine up to the i7-2720QM and 2 yr warranty. Thank goodness for a heftier than expected tax refund. :D

Cool! I myself knew that the 2630QM would be great for the price and I probably won't need the performance of the 2820QM,

but some extra cash made me invest in the stronger CPU as well..

Hopefully our choices will prove to be correct!
