I will try swapping the clear and red, and yes the black one went on the same post.

========================
This is a good thread to review and get the basics of what to expect with the AUO B173HW01 v.4: http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell...en-thread.html
I made a thread of the inside of the newer Dell L702x as well here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/565026-inside-l702x-fhd-3d-1080p-display-panel-assembly.html
Yes, these are Dells, but almost everyone including Clevo/Sager uses the standard 40-pin LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signal) cable/connection on the panel side. This has all the voltage and data lines in one ribbon cable. Clevo/Sager keeps this one cable separate from the web cam cable unlike Dell so all you need to concern yourself with is the single cable.
All you need to do is carefully and SLOWLY remove the (6) 3mm square rubber screw covers/bumpers on the front LCD bezel so that the rear adhesive stays on the rear of the rubbers. Put them on some wax paper to keep them fresh for when it comes time to re-apply them.
At this time, protect the ENTIRE palm rest and keyboard area with some bubble wrap or a cloth so that nothing makes contact during the next steps. Pay close attention to the area surrounding the LCD hinges. I use blue or green painter's tape where my bubble wrap or cloth cannot cover completely.
Now, remove the (6) bezel fasteners. After that, you will gently push up and out from the INSIDE of the bezel so that the plastic tabs start to release and pop up. Be gentle but firm. The Dell LCD swap thread should help demo this.
Once the bezel is off, put it aside and you will be looking at the bare LCD screen.
The easiest way at this point is to unscrew the top RIGHT and LEFT fasteners holding the LCD mounts to the LCD backing. This will allow enough play in the LCD backing to enable you to access the (4) small fasteners on each side of the LCD securing it to the hinge rods. I always start at the bottom and leave the top one on each side for last. Hold the LCD panel as you remove these final (2) top fasteners and then allow it to come forward towards you as you hold it in one hand.
You will now see the rear of the panel and the 40-pin LVDS connector secured with the clear tape. It is also stickered to the lower part of the LCD panel so be gentle separating it. Once the cable is off and the panel is removed, you are ready to put the new panel in, secure the cable, and start with the top (2) hinge rod fasteners. The rest is the reverse of how you took it apart. Make sure you see how the cable routing is around the hinges.
You may want to test the screen before you place the LCD bezel back on just to be safe. If you have broken the bezel and need a new one along with the rubber covers, let me know as I have an extra new one here.
Have fun and enjoy!

Scott, would you be able to make a step by step guide in pictures, just like some people have done on the Dell, but for the Clevo P170HM instead!
One thing is describing everythingbut being able to see it visually would be awesome
i know its a lot of work
so im just asking
-
If someone local in So. California wants to do the swap and has the panel purchased, I will do the swap for them at no charge and document it for everyone here.

looks like the 2 difficult parts of it will be getting the bazel off without breaking it, and getting the datacable out and in the new screen without breaking that either!
My german sounds like a drunk kangaroo, so i wouldnt recommend that
*i have already violated my warranty by doing some upgrades on it, but i cant stand the stock screen, so there is no turning back now, so i have to violate it a little more*

"My notebook is the Clevo P170HM, bought in Germany at DevilTech, one of the European Clevo... " -
so im quite excited about it....
And i have got my 2 panels of B173HW01 V4, cant wait to put one of them in -

taking the brezel appart istn that difficultits about as hard as taking of the keyboard
the cable itself is a bit tiny but also very manageable -
I think i have to repaste my GTX 485 m, which thermal paste do you recommend me?
idl temps: 37°c
Playing CS source: 65°
Playing Farcry2: 81°
During crysis2 the temps go up to 93°c!!!! -

Let the forum know how this works out! -
my 6230 came with the following combination from the reseller:
the red cable (top) and the black cable (bottem)
and is working fine -
Hi bastian
just noticed your sig you used gallium instead of thermal paste ... hows the result ? your temp so far so good ? -
the temperatures are quite good
Reffering to:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...s-cpu-temperature-clock-speed-comparison.html
I Recently Replaced the Liquid Ultra by gallium and yes it is a bit better but not by far ...
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE USE OF GALLIUM
its hard to apply and if you do a mistake you will regrett it
---------------
1) Laptop: Clevo P170hm
2) CPU: i7-2820QM
3) Self applied gallium
4) Ambient: 33 C
5) Idle: 41/37/39/40
6) Prime95: 73/74/75/74
7) CPU Speed: 2.8 GHz
GPU while gaming goes up to ~~ 85 C
---------------- -
i think with temps running over 80 you would need a cooling pad or something to give some external cooling - i think im gonna have this problem when bf3 finally gets released so will buy a good cooling pad to try get the temp down a little

Hey guys -
I am thinking about getting 5-10 of the upgrade AUO B173HW01 v.4 90% gammut panels from the factory in Taiwan as I still feel they are the best overall panels if you're looking for a glossy screen. It simply works (plug and play with the factory LVDS cable) in the NP8170.
So, if anyone is interested in doing a group buy of the AUO v.4 panels, let me know. I am based in California and would be shipping from here once the panels are received. All forms of payment will be accepted.
Scott- -
how is the sound on the 8170? heard it really suffers by comparison to the other laptop brands?
-
It impresses me. -

Hi, i have just got my AUO B173HW01 V.4 and installed it
It works perfectly and the panel is awesome looking, however i have 2 problems with it! that i didnt have with my Hannstar panel!
First i thought it was a problem with my specific AUO V.4 panel, thats why i have ordered 2 of those panels, i tried the other AUO V.4 panel, it had the exact same issues!
Is there any way i can fix these things: then the panel will be absolutely perfect!!!
1. When looking from a side angle, the white color appears a little bit red! (viewing angles left and right)
2. The darker red and orange looks like having a lot of bleeding and only these colours, while all other colours appears perfect!
The orange and red just looks weird, in games... in some strange way!
I havent done any modification with settings, i have just installed the Hannstar and the 2 AUO panels straight out of the box! -
It sounds like your V.4s need to be calibrated.
Reds and oranges on mine are beautifully vibrant, but not over-saturated or unnatural. -
And what are the "best" settings for the panel out there?! -
Kevin can you help me calibrate it correctly?
-
Besides, I will welcome the tutorial so the rest of us can have it for reference. -
To Calibrate the monitor, you can try to use the built in Windows 7 function but I have no idea how good that one is. Go to your Control Panel and in the search box type calib, then click on calibrate screen. Follow the instructions.
-
I do not have a calibration tool. I was fortunate to have my screen come looking good at default.
Your options are to either buy a calibration tool, try someone's custom profile, or find a business in your area which does calibrations. -
Use the v.4 profile.

Monitor calibration tool reviews
Just a thought..... if you get one of these, you could then offer to calibrate others' monitors for a fee, and recoup your investment in the device and maybe even make some money.
Let us know what you decide. -
I use:
Calibrize
it has worked out well, however, I use the reddish tinted calibrated version from:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...wf1-tlc1-lgd0285-glossy-lg-np8170-p170hm.html
I like it for the warm tones for my photoshopping (is that a word?)
I tried the profiles from page 339 and found the v.4 profile too blue, the 1080p profile too pink and the 900p version too blue. I have used the calibrize program but it too did not give the results I wanted. I originally stuck with the ICC from above that I mentioned.
It all comes down to what looks good to yourself and what you use it for. The ICC profile I used has been described as way too red. But then it is what I use it for and what my eyes "see".
I hope this helps.... -
Im also using Mifunet's calibration mentioned by rsdunphy.
And its perfect for my config, since I have the same GPU and screen used by Mifunet.
It's amazing how the default calibration sucks when compared to this one. I also recommend playing all direct3d9 games in window mode because its the only way to use custom calibrations. Unless its opengl or direct3d10 or 11, so fullscreen supports custom calibrations too. -
enchanced sound? Is that a standard feature? How does one go about activating it?
-
just kiddin, use FN + 5 (number 5) -
Hi guys, it seems my laptop has developed an issue over the last few hours. This morning when I booted my laptop up and watched a video on YouTube, the audio suddenly started crackling very hard. I rebooted my laptop after this and started playing some music files on WinAmp, and the problem came back. I loaded the same music file into Windows Media Player, and the crackling was still there, and sometimes it seemed to even slow down the tempo of the music. The audio files being used to test this issue are not corrupted and have never had an issue with their integrity.
What could be causing this? I haven't installed any new software or drivers before or since this issue reared its ugly head, nor has my laptop been exerted physically in any way that would cause damage. My memory and CPU usage are all low as well when the issue arises. The crackling happens with the internal speakers, as well as when I hook up headphones or external speakers, and it comes and goes. Volume also does not affect this in any controllable way that I have noticed.
As of writing this message, the crackling has disappeared randomly, however I am sure it will return. This doesn't make any sense to me, nor have I ever experienced anything like this before!
EDIT: Right after posting, during playback of another audio file, the crackling came in hard and loud for about 5 seconds, and then disappeared after another 5 seconds or so. -
-
haha thanks man...much appreciated.
-
EDIT: After a bit of further investigation, it seems the crackling happens whenever there is a small spike in CPU usage. The reason I stated earlier that my CPU usage is low is because these spikes in CPU usage only bring the total to around 25-30%. All that is being done is browsing the internet and playing music at the same time. This was never an issue before so I don't understand what could be causing this now.
EDIT 2: So, I decided I wanted to run another test and was going to put my CPU through a stress test with some audio playing to see what would happen with the crackling sound. I went into Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility application to do a stress test, and the test failed to start, telling me that "CPU Stress Test Failed from thermal throttling." At the bottom of the screen in the utility, it is telling me that CPU Throttling is 100%. I am assuming that this is causing my CPU to stay at the default 800MHz clock speed and why I am getting crackling sounds whenever my CPU usage spikes in the slightest as the system is having difficulties keeping up. My CPU is running idle at 35C though so I am unsure why thermal throttling would be engaged.
EDIT 3: Okay, so I decided to unplug my laptop and for some reason thermal throttling reduced down to 0% and my clock speeds increased as a result to 1.2GHz. Immediately after, I plugged my laptop back in, and thermal throttling stayed at 0% and I was able to run the stress test and my CPU clocks went up to the 3GHz they are supposed to. It seems that for some reason or another today, the CPU engaged thermal throttling and never disengaged it, even though my CPU temps would not have ever been high. This machine keeps cool under full load and I've never seen thermal throttling engage before, but it seems unplugging the power source reset everything for some reason or another and now everything is back to normal. If the problem happens again, I'll be back, but for now everything works great again, and thermal throttling was the reason the crackling was happening. -
Has anyone attempted to fit this bad boy into a Swiss Gear Ibex GA-7316-06F00 backpack? I really prefer the Ibex to the often offered Targus TXL617, but that doesn't matter much if it doesn't easily fit inside. Just got mine last week and am still using my old XPS backpack - but the fit really isn't very good. Thanks.
-
I can't swear to it or find back where I read it, but if I remember correctly the Ibex, despite appearing to be able to, doesn't actually fit the 8170. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Slappa is having a sale currently for their .com site and is supposedly launching one for the .ca site today. Might want to check out some of their gear and the sale price. If you PM their rep, SlappaDOM I believe, he is usually fairly quick to help.
-Edit-
Apparently, I was wrong. I must have been thinking of the Pegasus or some such. According to the following topic it does fit.

Is there any Malibal Satori P170HM owners out there who could comment on matte screen. Any comments. Maybe some pics.

The other one I'm currently deciding between is the Alienware 17" Orion backpack. Curious to see if anyone is running their 8170 around in that.
Though I feel like I'm touching a taboo line putting the sager in an alienware bag -

Hello,
i wanna try resetting CMOS... Is it possible to get a service manual or get instruction on where and how to find CMOS battery or CMOS reset jumper?
Thanks in advance
