The person who originally posted the pic said that's exactly what he sees, during regular use.

I just hope thats a rare defect, but idk i'm kinda worried the screen is gonna be total crap. I will probably use my hdtv for gaming mostly but there will be occasions i wanna use the laptop screen itself to game on.

I'm pretty sure the GTX 485m does NOT go that high. My Furmark tests went up as high as 91C, but in truth, during gaming it never went even close to 90C for all that matter.

Idle temps were at 35-38C. Load was at 70-85C

Yeah, furmark will stress it to 90C or higher, but gaming is usually less than 80C.

Its more on the left goz Clevo decided to put the "center" speaker on the left not in the middle :p
Just turn the center down a little :p

Idle temps of my 485 are 28-33 never seen it above 70c, was 68 running 3Dmark Vantage for 3 hours.
Think Furmark will get it to 75c or so but not 90 :p
Temps i use are from EVGA's precision tweaker, and displayed on my G13 LCD screen realtime.

Yeah my screen looks little more bright on the bottom when i got just a black screen, its worse then my 27 inc samsung, but IRL i dont notice it that mutch.
There are better screens out there for sure, but i am ok with mine.
Will make a HD movie of the screen while i am watching a movie on it, still figuring out the resolution for that youtube stuff :p
The annoying red thing above my laptop is the ROG logo of my REX3.

So excited. I'm literally days away from being able to order.

I'm only going with the default config, but with the GTX 485M. I'll upgrade everything else down the road.

It's been nice watching, waiting, and anticipating with you guys, but I've decided to move on - waiting for the 6970m has made me overly obsessed, as well as pretty annoyed. Maybe my next laptop will be a Clevo/Sager, but for this round I've decided on the Alienware since I could get it at a steep discount from AAFES. Enjoy your systems, and I'll see you back here in 3 or so years :)

Just ordered mine today. Mailed the invoice and check off so now I'm just playing the waiting game. Nothing too shabby, basically just got the stock configuration with the 485m and upgraded 6230 wi-fi card. Came out to just under $1850 from LPC Digital. I plan on upgrading other components myself (blu-ray drive, ram, hard drive, and possibly later on down the road the cpu).

Oh wow, never even noticed the larger drive was only $20 extra. I never paid much attention to the hard drive configurations due to the fact that I have several external drives and a 500 GB 7200rpm WD Scorpio Black drive that's basically brand new. It was bought for a previous laptop that's now busted so it will be getting swapped into my new beast once I receive it.

I just got mine, i'm sooo impressed.

The only gripe i have is the keyboard which for me is HUGE so i'm on the fence. But I got another 20 days to try to get used to it.

I play a lot of intensive high rated and professional games including WoW arena at MLG and formerly CS at CPL.

I cannot game on this machine without attaching a keyboard as the keys are too close which is too bad since it has the space.

It could just be something I need to get used to so we'll see. Tried a bunch of games for 10-15 min each, and was very annoyed, immediately plugged in my g15.

I am loving the machine so far; however a couple of things I wanted to point out:

1). For those who are arriving from an HP 17in screen, the Sager 17in will seem a little smaller because they choose to make the monitor a little wider, sacrificing screen height.

2). The fan cycling is not loud at all. While it may be weird for those coming from HP (again with the HP example haha), it is honestly barely noticable. I remember with my sager NP8690, the fans were crazy even when idling.

3). I personally love the keyboard so far. Its very responsive and perfect for someone who types alot and has used a 17in keyboard for his whole life

4). Stock screen quality seems perfect for me. I have had no problems with it. In fact, the screen is so bright and clean it makes my whole room seem drab in comparison T_T

While everything is installing. I really like the screen, mine looks like the one w/ a lot of light at the bottom w/ the blacks when I boot up but I personally didnt notice it much after windows loaded. I love the keyboard lol I took a typing test and hit 80wpm which is about avg for me. Everything was a sinch to install and I honestly dont even hear the fans (I am watching TV and I have not played a game yet). Due to the hdd I only got a 5.9 on windows :( If anyone has any questions go ahead and ask!

    Guys,

Looking at finally dumping my Alienware for an NP8170 however the whole wifi OR bluetooth thing is frustraiting me.

The reseller I'm looking at offers the RealTek stock card, the Killer Networks card, and the Intel 6300.

Needless to say, everything I have ever heard about the RealTek wifi stuff says it sucks. So my instinct is to go with old reliable Intel 6300.

What are your thoughts? Am I making the best choice?

I use my bluetooth occassionally, I'm just not sure if I want to give up the convenience of built in.

I gave up the bluetooth for the 6300; I think the extra "oomph" on WiFi is worth it. If I ever want bluetooth, New Egg sells a bunch of different USB adapters that are low-profile, like Logitech's Mouse/Keyboard receivers. Cheap, too.

Was the HP a 16:10 aspect (i.e. 1680x1050 or 1920x1200)? Because this is a 17.3" 16:9 standard dimension screen: 15.08" x 8.47" unless you mean the bezel as well. But that is not very wide compared with other laptops I've seen either.

In any case glad you like your machine.

I changed my order from the 500g hybrid seagate to the 750g regular HDD as a secondary drive for storage due to the freezes i read about on the seagate. Does anyone know if this issue is fixed now by any chance and if it was ever due to this? I still have time to change my order due to waiting for GPU next week. I figure also since its mainly storage and the 120g SSD will be the main operating system not risk the seagate. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Depends on what network your are running at home (which is presumably where you'll be using your laptop most often). The key is matching the adapter to the wireless network and router you actually use. (And if you'd like built-in bluetooth, the choice narrows quickly.)

The most important parameters to consider about your router/network:

Single-band vs. Dual-band: Single band routers and adapters operate on the 2.4Ghz frequency range ("band"), while dual-band routers and adapters can operate on both the 2.4Ghz band and the 5Ghz band. A dual-band adapter offers no advantage or benefit whatsoever when using a 2.4Ghz network.

Bandwidth: 802.11n networks now come in several bandwidth "flavors," depending on the equipment in use. Most 802.11n routers and adapters use a single spatial stream to operate at up 150Mbps. Some routers use two bonded streams to operate at up to 300Mbps. And finally, a few newer routers can use three spatial streams to operate (theoretically, at least ;)) at up to 450Mbps. In all cases, these routers must be used with an adapter that matches their spatial stream configuration in order to operate at their maximum speeds. (Note that even high-speed broadband internet connections max out well below all of these speeds, so the faster configurations might enhance certain intra-network data transfers, but they have no impact on internet performance.)
    ------

The stock WLAN card that comes in most laptops, including the stock card on the Sagers, is a single-band 802.11b/g/n card. If you run a single-stream 2.4Ghz wireless-n network at home, this card should perform as well as any of the other options. It requires two receiver antennae in the laptop.

The Intel 6230 is a dual-band card that is compatible with single-stream routers (<150Mbps) as well as routers using two spatial streams to offer speeds up to 300Mbps. It requires two receiver antennae. It can be used on 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz networks, and it includes the convenience of onboard Intel bluetooth.

The Intel 6300 is a dual-band card that is compatible with single-stream (<150Mbps) and dual-stream routers (<300Mbps), as well as newer wireless-n routers that employ three spatial streams to offer speeds up to 450Mbps. It requires three receiver antennae in the laptop. It does does not include bluetooth.

The Bigfoot Networks Killer 1102 is a dual-band card card compatible with 150Mbps and 300Mbps networks. Its capabilities are essentially the same as the Intel 6230. It doesn't include bluetooth.

It's important to understand that the adapter's capabilities are important only with respect to the network they're connecting to. Capabilities that exceed your actual wireless network can't add any "oomph" or performance improvement...you'll use the adapter settings that match your router/network and the other capabilities are disregarded...specifically:

    - Dual-band capability is irrelevant for networks running on the 2.4Ghz band.
    - Multi-stream capabilities are irrelevant when using a router that runs a 150Mbps single stream network.
    - Triple-stream (450Mbps) capabilities are irrelevant when using anything but one of the few routers that can run triple-stream 450Mbps networks.

Since very few people use triple-stream routers, and having bluetooth onboard is handy (if you use bluetooth), I think the Intel 6230 probably hits the sweet spot for the vast majority of users. Intel cards also have the advantage of very mature, well-supported software. (Glitchy, off-brand WLAN drivers suck. :()

Ok so after a full night of getting everything installed and copied over I really like the machine. The only complaint I have on the screen is when it loads and the background is all black, it is a little washed out. However, once windows boots I barely notice it, if I notice it at all. I played Crysis: Warhead last night on Enthusiast with 0 hiccups. Steam is installed and my games are downloading while I am at work.

The drivers and updates were very easy to do and it doesnt appear to have any issues so far. The fan noise to me is minimal unless you sit in dead silence. Windows 7 64bit went on really easy, it boots up in seconds. It is insane how fast it is.

    My machine: Sager NP8170 2630 i7, GTX485M, 500gb HDD, 6.0 GB ram

The "little washed out" effect is a slight bleed, it's normal for most TN panels. As soon as it's minimal, it is ok. Haven't seen a single new TN panel with zero light bleed on a dark/black background.
Glad you like the machine! Enjoy!

I was worried about this due to the fact that there was a guy a few pages back saying that he had some dead/stuck pixels in the middle of his screen. So much in fact that I was going to shell out an extra $100 for the insurance. Larry from LPC-Digital told me that the standard warranty from Sager allows up to five bad pixels, and none in the center of the screen, or it's returnable. I would think that on a high-res screen such as this one a dead pixel would be almost unnoticeable though. However, I'm definitely hoping that my screen is 'pixel-perfect'.

Anyone who is playing Crysis 1 on their NP8170: how does your game look on highest settings?

I find that my rig can handle the settings great, but I feel like the colors (particularly the green of the vegetation) isn't very vibrant- a little too pale, at least compared to the numerous youtube videos I've compared it too.

Do Geforce drivers usually have a setting to crank up saturation? That might help. Then again if you got the default LED panel that might be the cause.

I thought it might be the screen, but my Starcraft II colors look perfect compared to other examples so I am curious.

Sweet, got the new B3 motherboard in my 8170 and it looks like the 6970m should be available in the 8170 starting late next week...then I get to make the decision to go Nvidia or AMD...fun fun!

Has anyone tested plugging this laptop into an hdtv and surround sound? I am wondering how the audio output is through the spdif port. I am going to play some games on my sony bravia and hopefully with 5.1 sound through my logitech Z-5500 setup.

I guess if no one else reports about this i'll have to do it come tuesday.

The only thing to really evaluate is whether it functions properly (i.e., outputs 5.1 channels for 5.1 content). SPDIF output is raw digital....you're just sending the raw 1s & 0s to external equipment for D/A conversion and processing. So the sound quality will depend entirely on the external surround system you connect it to.

I guess i'm just being paranoid if it supports true surround sound. I can't stand playing games without surround sound anymore....too spoiled.
