    I got a SLAPPA Kiken 18" p-tac shoulder bag:
CD Cases, DVD Cases & Laptop Backpacks, Bags by SLAPPA

I really wanted to go with their Aura "Bottomless Pit" trolley bag... but the dimensions won't work with the airline I take most often. The Kiken should do my well, though. I can take both a carry-on and a computer bag on the plane, so I've got a small overnighter that I'll pack, too.

I have a Targus XL...it fits the laptop wonderfully! I do recommend being careful with the backpack...don't go running with it in the backpack (obviously).

I know about the tight spot. I ordered mine on 3/11. I found out last tuesday that I am laid off. However, I have one job in the bank depending on if the contract goes through and another offer in the making this coming week. I also have 3 great jobs I am going after this week. I am a Navy contractor and have a good feeling. I have talked it over with my wife and she wants me to go ahead with the laptop purchase and we'll see what happens from there. We are good until the end of June. I really want this laptop as it is my dream laptop. Film at eleven ...

    Hi LightningPL.

Can you please tell me where you did you buy that mate screen, Was that a online shop or something like this ?

Regarding the screen swap, was that hard to do ? Any major problems with that ?

I'm expecting my P170HM to be delivered hopefully by the end of this week from DevilTech. Just received confirmation that the build has been accomplished last week (I've placed the order on 23/1). It will come with a stock screen and i hope the quality of it will be close or better to my current laptop's screen - Alienware M17. If not i'll be looking for a swap as well.

    Cheers.

I got my new issue of PC Gamer, and was surprised to see a two page ad from Sager Notebook. It lists everything from the NP7280 down to the NP3101.

The most interesting thing, is that the NP7280, NP8170, and NP8150 GPU options are listed as:

    • 2GB DDR5 Radeon HD 6970M
    • Optional 2GB DDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M GPU.
Seems strange, that Sager is advertising the 6970M, before it's even available.

Anyone plan on playing SW:TOR when it comes out? That was the primary reason for the purchase of this laptop. Also, Shift Unleashed 2, Battlefield 2: BC adn Vietnam until BF3 comes out. Plus I am sure I will find other games to get addicted to as the year progresses.

thnx man !!!!after reinstalling THX prp it worked!

some tips for p17hm among us:
-the laptop will not reboot when used with battery if a razor mouse is plugged into one of the USB 3.0 ports. tested with an MS mouse and have no such problem!
-To get the 5.1 working use the THX console "thnx Breadmix"
-To install the webcam driver, first enable the webcam FN+F10
-To install the BT drivers first enable Bt FN+F12
-Install the new chipset drivers from the clevo site if you have a momentus xt installed!

I now have 4 days to use the P170 and am VERY happy with my purchase!
games like home front, bullet storm, L4D2, run perfectly at 1080p with 8xAA.
    Crysis 2 runs great @Hardcore 1080p.

by the way, the 5.1 effects in home front are great definitely worth testing!

So my 8170 is currently at Sager and I mentioned the random freezing issues during idle...they told me that many 8170's have experienced the same problem and that "...the RAM test failed...so we are going to replace your motherboard."

I then asked them, does it have anything to do with the Sandybridge recall, and they told me that it was a completely separate issue.

So I guess they will be swapping my motherboard and/or swapping some RAM...-sigh-

I've been playing Crysis 2 all weekend. Its dope. The laptop runs the game like a champ. Had no problems with it. Its on high settings and max res. No lag whatsoever and its absolutely beautiful with the 90% gamut screen. GTA IV on max settings with AA and all that hiccuped a few times, but it works like a champ as well. It's like every old game i play, looks like a new game now since i can play on full settings.

Hmz sound to me like u need to repaste.
Mine gets about 68 after 5 hours of crisis. (i have the "normal" "free" paste on it.
Thinking about doing MX2 or somthing on it but till now i am okey with 70c
Try FN+2 it sets the fans at full speed.
The card can handle 90c according to specs, but i allways like things cooler.
In my room it sounds like a server room, i got 4 c2d quads and a i7 920 running 24/7 including the vidcards at 100% with distributed computing.
    2xGTX570 2xHD5870 2xHD5770 2xGTX275 HD5970
And no i never using the heater and the windows is allways open :p

My neighbur is still pissed my laptop plays crisis better then his Core i5 750 + HD5850 :p

I love my p170hm, now i just need my 1600Mhz ddr3 to work.
I mailed clevo Germany and they never hear about any problems using ddr3 at 1600Mhz..
Weird since i see so many where it dont work, it prolly works with DDR3 with no XMP profiles since this thing donno what XMP is.

    @decayedmatter

Trust me dark haired one, this thing runs just about anything u throw at it.
It outuns my Socket 1366 Core i7 920 + GTX570 in 3dmark... (at stock speeds)
    It reaches 18Gb a second with just DDR3 1333 cas 9, ok my 920 does 28Gb a sec but thats tripple channel at 2Ghz c9 :p
And this amazing thing even got a DVI out,

Tomorrow (in about eh 7 hours) i am gonna make some vids running some games, 3dmark and other stuff on it.

    Pretty amazing, this video

    YouTube - Kobalt G150 -- Metro 2033 Gameplay

Metro 2033 running on very high at 1080 at 35 fps+ when notebook check said it can only run it at like 16 fps...i can only imagine what this card can achieve at 720p. What an amazing mobile GPU!

my gpu is already equipped with other thermal paste " AS5", idl my temps are very good.
while playing CS scource, trackmania, COD mw2 temperatures go not above 75 °c.
during furmark and crysis the temperatures can climb to 90 + °
when I leave furmark running for 30min the temps go up to 93 ° allowing the fans to spin a higher speed and reduce the temps back to 88 °. when using FN+1 the temps drop to 84°

According to others I should be not worry about these values the say its normal for a gpu like the gtx485m, the notebook itself does not feel warm at all.

No, you should never hit 90C while gaming.

I don't care much about Furmark, but games should not push it that high.

Dont worry :) be happy :)
where did you heard that the stock screen is crap?
personally I think the stock screen is ok, it's not the best.
but the color reproduction and brightness are perfectly fine! only in dark images have a bit of a sweet spot. but in games I have no problems with it.
you're not moving tour head all the time back and forth when you are gaming or working for me its just fine :)

if you want you can always find something negative, but I am fortunate to have the ability to compare between many other notebooks, "I work at a computer store" and I can safely say that both the construction, image and audio quality of the Clevo p170hm rise HIGH above the average notebook " hp, smsung, acer,...."

The stock screen has been reviewed by tech sites, as average to below average. It's a clear fact, at this point.

I will definitely upgrade mine, asap. If I had the extra change, I'd do it when I order.

I think you're overreacting! By the way the AMD 6970m you are waiting for runs hotter than the GTX 485! "source notebookcheck 94°c"
    Today i monitored a HP EliteBook with a quadro 2800, it had idl temps of 55 ° C under load 106 °c !
My old GTX 8800gt sli rig had temps above 95°c "overclockt" on a desktop!

I must say, when I took this high temp's my room temperature was close to 25 ° c

No one else has reported hitting or going over 90C though (in game), so your machine is the odd one out.

EDIT: and I'm not waiting for the 6970M anymore; after much thought I've decided to go with the GTX 485M. The only way I end up with the 6970m, is if it's announced within the next 7 business days.

Where is a post for the review of the screen? Is there another notebook out there in this price range and performance range that has a better screen? Reading through the forums has me insanely worried about a 2k purchase I made.

The screen isn't bad besides the viewing angles. I'm super picky about screens and I'm fine with it. It's not going to ruin your laptop by any means. It's definitely better then the crappy screen I had on my HP laptop. That said, 200 bucks for the nicer screen is an option I wish I had when I purchased my laptop back in January.

For me it was a choice between the screen and the 485 but due to budget not both. I pretty much stripped it down to get the 485 so I didnt have to buy it later. That is comforting, it has to be better than what I have now.

So far I feel that the screen is perfectly fine. I am very happy with it.

Maybe its just me, but I feel like the speakers are a little bit stronger on the left-hand side vs. the right. When I watch youtube videos its very difficult to tell, but when I play starcraft 2 it seems like the left hand speakers are more distinct than the right. Anyone else notice this?

It's definitely average, but based on screens I've used (not all mine) between M11x, Dell Mini, Envy 15, M15x, Acer 1410, Asus 13" notebook, I'd say the screen is better with respect to contrast, brightness, and easy on the eyes in general. The only thing I don't like are the vertical viewing angles are terrible.

Yeah, I'm probably painting it as worse than it is. Hopefully that screen is an outlier.

I guess I'll find out soon, as I should have my order in by next week.

I'm going with the 2630QM + GTX 485M combo, with everything else at default. Will cost me a little less than $1900 from ProStar.

I just had a work contract end, so the plan is go as cheaply as possible for now, to upgrade the screen and Blu-ray sometime down the line.

Maybe I'll wait for that 95% Gamut LCD.

Yeah man, I had exactly the same problem!
this is due to the THX software, what you should do is look in the Realtek HD audio configuration, and set your speakers to 5.1
After this open the THX software, settings and move the crossover frequency more to the right! play some music to test.

Don't put too much stock in digital photos of screens, they're incredibly hard to photograph well. I guarantee that I could make any black screen, no matter how high quality, look that bad with certain exposure settings.

crossover frequency? I don't see a cross over tab haha. All I did was go to "Realtek HD audio manager" and adjusted the balance farther to the right.

Are you sure this is a THx software issue? Does that mean if i uninstall it, the issue will go away?
