Yeah, changing the config should not push you back to the end of the line, until it is actually built..
Ask Justin, he should be on the forums and he'll clarify it for you.

While I really like the specs and potential speed of the GTX 485M, I am worried about its power draw compared to the GTX 460M and GTX 470M.. wiki shows the 460&470 being 45-50watts TDP whilst the 485 is at 100. I have some hopes of having my future laptop being able to last a hour or two with downclocked/undervolted GPU while on battery power (non gaming usage).. and keep the ability to game while plugged in. Anyone have accurate power draw numbers for these models?
-
A few users have the 485m, and I think it did last about 2 hours..
Or was it for the P150HM.. -

Exactly right, you can change your order anytime and it will not move your spot in line. If the price goes up, you are locked in at the price you paid, if it lowers we guarantee pricing up until the day it ships. -

Do you have the option to run at Extreme Preset so we can compare with the 6970m here:
AMD Radeon HD 6970M Review w/ Eurocom - HotHardware
Thanks.
Otherwise I'll do it when my laptop comes. So far it doesn't show any delays, but I figured the weather might delay it a day. I hope not. Otherwise it will be here tomorrow at some time. It's not showing it arriving at the depot though, and it usually does by this time of night for other packages so has me wondering. -
I'm where you are at as well. Really sucks intel ed up, but at least they are fixing it early. I need a new laptop FUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! I figure if i have to wait again until March/April and if the 6970 is out by then or about to roll out and its a big price difference ill be going with ATI/AMD.

updated post 638
seems to be the 6970 outperformed the 485! at least if the 6970 is housed in the monster (x7200)! -

and the hothardware review HD 6970M Extreme Preset 3DMark 11:
AMD Radeon HD 6970M Review w/ Eurocom - HotHardware
GPU Score 884
That puts the 6970M decently ahead of the 485m. First time I've seen a bench do that. I guess I'd still like to wait for a bench from something other than Eurocom, and more extensive testing too. -
Gah, laptop is delayed at least a day due to the storm. I won't be happy if it doesn't get here until Monday afternoon.
-
Just curious, it was 70' in NC yesterday..
Where is this storm today? What regions are affected? -

Note the Metro 2033 and crysis GPU tests:
In Metro 2033 1920x1080 Benchmark - the 485m coupled with a 2920xm managed 16.1 fps -the 6970m managed 18.0 fps when coupled with a much weaker 740qm
In Crysis 1920x1080 Benchmark - the 485m w/ 2920xm managed a 22.56fps - the 6970m with the weaker cpu managed a 24.6
Now lets remember, this is on test drivers as well as a much weaker cpu. If these tests hold true in the end with final release drivers, its safe to say that for users planning on gaming on native res. At least in some cases the 6970 will perform better than the 485m, and in all cases it will be cheaper. -
Not having dealt with graphics benchmarks for a lot of years, let me ask a stupid question:
Is the average user going to notice any difference between the 485m and 6970m?
I do play games, but I'm no "fragmaster". Obviously, with the age of my current laptop I'm not playing any of the latest games (okay, any games built in the last 4 years, really), and the new laptop is partially so I can try my old gray head at some. I'm mostly interested in things like Fallout: New Vegas, DragonAge, the new Neverwinter Nights being built currently...
I also have a bit of an aversion to ATI/AMD. One of the biggest gripes I have about this HP is that the graphics drivers have NEVER been updated, as far as I know... the only driver available is dated 12/1/2005. I know Nvidia issues a lot of driver updates. Maybe it's just my disgust with ATI, but I really want to go Nvidia with the new system.
I realize that graphics vendors create hardcore camps as much or more than processor brands. I also am old enough to be in the "Intel and Nvidia, AMD and ATI" mindset.
Am I wasting money going to a 485m? Would I be happy with a 6970m? What about specifying a lower power NVidia gpu like the 470m or even the lowly 460m?
I haven't been this indecisive about a computer decision since Win95 and OS/2.
Oh, as a postscript: I am much less worried about the price difference than I am long term happiness with the product. -
Bottom line is most likely the 6970m will be within 10% performance of the 485m. The whole point of it is that it will most likely be significantly cheaper. Although other than Eurocom, there's been no official word on pricing or availability from any of the major vendors in the USA. Just because it may be cheaper in another market doesn't mean it will be in the US.
I guess with this whole Intel fiasco it can buy you a few weeks and can change your order if 6970m does come to fruition and more benchmarks solidify what we've seen and at a significantly cheaper price point. -
Alright, so I'm gonna keep the 470M until the 6970m comes out!
One thing of note, when you close the laptop...you need to be super gentle with it. I have tiny microscopic bumps that are on the bottom of the LCD panel...its not noticeable unless you look at it under certain lighting conditions--but it's really easy to scuff on the bottom because it rubs against the speakers.
Does anyone know of any solution to the microbumps/scuffs on the LCD panel...I'm just OCD XD -

I GOT IT! Woot!
Man this thing is a BEAST! Power supply is truly a brick, about the same size, and probably heavier lol.
I gotta install winblows and stuff still, but initial impressions on build quality are good. I'll try to do some more detail analysis later. As posted in another thread, I'm kinda tied up this weekend but will do my best to at least get some initial impressions written and with any luck a few benches in before the super bowl.
I thought my Sager NP8662 was big, this NP8170 could eat it for lunch. That's ok though, my laptop mainly sits on my kitchen counter or on the desk in my bedroom. Altough I could pick up my 15" with one hand, not sure if I can/should with this. -

Congrats also- you got this SB unit by the sliver before they stopped selling it.
I am still a dual 6970 fan boy and will wait patiently with my dinky m11x until it comes out and then I would be a very, very, very, happy camper! -
M11x is an impressive little thing to say the least. I'm glad I got mine. It won't max many games, but it gets the job done. Still working on tuning it for Bad Company 2 though, not real impressed with the results so far. If I could create a custom resolution of 1024x576 I might have a fighting chance. It's either native res or 1280x720 and 20-30fps or lower resolution and hopefully 30-35fps.
I really don't want to sacrifice use of the IGP though, that's what gives me my beloved 8.5+ hours of battery use when I need it. Too bad they don't give us the option in the BIOS to turn on the IGP exclusively like they do the dedicated.
Anyhow, enough about the M11x, I have a new baby waiting for my tender loving care and her name is "Heart of Gold". -
Wow, wonder what I should call mine when it gets here..
-
Congrats on the new machine! -

I've made my final purchasing decisions. I'm going to take the 6970M, then will spend $200 on one of Mythlogic's 92% gamut glossy screens. Screen quality means a lot to me, more than the extra coin the 485M requires.

-
MythLogic, has it been confirmed that these higher color gamut screens will fit properly in the 8170? -

With this LCD talk, does anyone have any recommendations for an external LCD monitor or links to some good discussions? I am using a very old Dell 2001FP and probably paid $800 way back! I see some IPS monitors for < $300 on website...With my limited understanding, would a TN monitor be better for gaming?
-
TN would be better for gaming, with faster response time..
But to be honest, 5ms is said to be enough... I'm not sure on this so others could chime in -
5ms is more than adequate. I used to game on a 16ms monitor and it was fine.
-
Yeah with his +59 Rep power, I can firmly say that an IPS nowadays would also be sufficient for gaming, I think most are 5~8ms even for IPS nowadays.

Hello All,
Just picked up a Clevo from M-Tech. I am pleased with the unit so far, but the fans are driving me a bit crazy.
They are not too loud, but one of them tends to cycle too much - I would think that it would be better for it to stay on at a low RPM and then gear up as needed.
Is there a known app to control this on the the Clevo P170HM?
Many thanks,
R -
Yeah, I was about to comment on that also. They are audible even when just running on the desktop.
-
Maybe it is just for the 17" models?..
I did not notice these from other model reviews. -
How much difference is there between the 90% gamut screen and the standard one? -
