Except a CPU isnt meant for gaming. Thats why i didnt get the extreme. Seems to be a little too much for me. But a higher CPU with that high cache is nice for any kind of compiling or encoding. Which i do a lot. Thats not to say that if someone says i need a gaming computer, should i get the extreme CPU and get the 460 or 470, then i would def say get the 485 and get a lesser CPU. It all depends on application.

As I'm quoting and commenting on gaming benchmarks, I thought it was clear that my post was to be taken in the context of what a gamer should do.

Ugh, I was put on back order...

Does anyone at Xotic have an estimate of when the next shipment of 8170s will be arriving?

Also, since there was a recent shipment, when can we expect reviews for this machine?

I ordered without RAM or SSD or Windows. I'm providing those myself.

A rep earlier (xoticpc?) stated that next shipment from Sager will be ~ Feb 7.

Your comments about the possible better cooling in the NP8170 chassis and how this impacts upon the CPU and Turbo Boost made me think of the previous models.

In the previous generation, the 15'' chassis were found to have a sticker covering the inside of the CPU vent that when removed reduced CPU temps by around 10C. However, none of the 17'' chassis models were reported to have that same CPU vent sticker. There were many theories about this and it makes me wonder if something similar has occurred in this case. Of course it could just be that the 17'' has better cooling but I doubt it. Surely the size difference between the 15'' and the 17'' is not enough to make such a big difference.

Is the 485 really worth that much more over the 470? The 460, for sure, without question.. but the 470 is in between the 460 and 485 no?...

Anyone who has a 470, can you please throw your 2cents in?

    Thanks

The 470M stock Vantage GPU is ~8.5k

The 485M stock Vantage is 12K

Expect that 30% difference to translate across to most games.

30% is worth $295, to me.

I heard somewhere on this board that there were some sound issues? Why wouldn't old drivers work for the NP8170, it uses the same sound card as the NP 8690.

As for my order, this is what I got from xotic pc:

Thank you for your order with Xotic PC!

"Sager is currently awaiting a shipment of this model to arrive in stock. This newly-released model is available in limited quantity. Availability on all items, especially newly-released models, changes on a daily basis and cannot be guaranteed. Your order will be completed as quickly as possible once additional machines become available, but we cannot guarantee the number of available models at this time. We thank you for your understanding, and you will be updated with additional information as it becomes available. You will be contacted once production for your order is confirmed. If you have delivery constraints or have questions or concerns, please contact [email protected].

We are expecting a shipment of this model around the middle of February, we cannot guarantee availability of this model. You will be updated accordingly.

    Thanks,
    XoticPC"

Bah, so I guess we will see what happens. I'll be disappointed if I have to wait till mid-February, its been an annoyance trying to get a laptop that I actually want from xoticpc for 2 months.

I think the same, if the 470m is like a 480m or a little bit better, then can play any game and save some bucks compared with 485. And would be nice if anyone with 470m could say an how's the performance in games specially playing at 1920*1080 resolution.

Hey Mr. Muckley, maybe we can run a few same benchmarks to get a good comparison. What are your laptop specs? Mine's in my sig.

I'll compile a list of benchmarks and any you might have available. Many are free downloads, others are in-game.

Ok. I'll put together a list and links. If you're willing to spend some time running the benches. Usually it's just installing the program / game and running the benchmark.

Since our systems are nearly identical except I have the 485m you have the 470m it might help people get a better understanding of the difference in performance between the cards.

I understand if you don't want to go through all that though.

Isn't it managed by the on-CPU PCH? I think southbridge functions are mostly managed on-CPU but not sure about firewire.

Is that username ibanez for the guitar or Denise Richards? :D

The brushed aluminum is NOT a fingerprint magnet. It's metal, not plastic. I have it on my NP8662 and its beautiful. I love it.

Hey guys, new member here. Laptop broke a few weeks ago and trying to choose between two to get as my new one. Since this is one of them I was hoping you guys could answer a few things for me ^^.

A)How is the sounds? Ive heard complaints about Sager sound before, obviously doesn't have to be crazy loud, it is a laptop after all.

2)How nice is that screen brightness and clarity wise compared to other laptops?

III)How is the cooling when running relatively high end games, I hear Asus has a lot of cooling issues and that Sager is very solid with cooling, could be biased people but I do seem to see a lot of complaints for Asus, how is this one?

    Thanks for any help guys.

I don't know the last time Clevo used latches. They just close, and it isn't a problem unless you hold it upside down and shake.

BTW, that screen looks like a mirror. D'oh! The glossy screen is about the only thing I don't like about it based on specs alone. But I'll be ordering a matte screen protector and let you know how it goes.

I noticed XoticPC and a few other resellers are now offering a matte screen option for this model. Is there any further information on this screen? I read that the tradeoff for matte is that it's less vivid than glossy. Is that still the case or has technology improved and that isn't an issue anymore?

I think it's like Indoors: Glossy > Matte, Outdoors: Matte > Glossy.
I've got a matte screen Thinkpad next to me, and I can tell you the quality difference between that and my dv6 is interesting.. The matte screen is no where near as good, with that being said it is 7 years old?

A 7 year old matte screen would be no comparison to the current matte screen on the Sager NP8130, or the screens some are putting on other Sager models.
