What do you guys think? Basically mine is about to leave the states and reach me here in the middle-east. Shipping will most likely cost me around 150 to 200 usd as I pay based on volumetric weight and such. I might have a chance to stop it from leaving the states and have it sent to a friend of mine for safe keeping instead. So? Should I stop it and pay to have it shipped back to my friend until we find out how this recall thing is gonna work or do I just keep it as is and until the time comes that my sata craps out I ship it back since either way I am covered by a 1 year parts warranty.

The problem here lies, when will the already received laptops be able to receive the fix?

When will Intel be able to provide the new MB's for repair?..
I'm not sure, if you don't have to use it for another month or so,
I'd say stop the transit for you to save some money.

    From Sager:

"As some of you may have heard, Intel has recently announced a halt to shipments of 6 Series chipsets due to a quality concern. Sager has been working with Intel and Clevo to determine details and the timeline for a resolution of this problem. For those of you with units containing these chips (8130, 8150 and 8170 systems), we want to insure you that we are endeavoring to reach a resolution quickly. We will keep you informed of developments as we learn more. We thank you in advance for your patience."

That's a tough question, if you have 48 hours to wait, I would wait that 48 hours to see if there is any new information at that point. But because of the nature of the flaw, you might get lucky and never have an issue, but you might get unlucky and immediately have an issue.

Yeah I can live without using it for another month or so as I have a pretty decent gaming desktop. I'll see if I can stop it tomorrow. Thanks for the input.

The most I have I would think is 24 hours. I am gonna have to wait a little bit either way as its 11pm where I am and I wont be able to call the shipping company until tomorrow so yeah. Hopefully something pops up by then.

Recalls are usually not on the same track as a warranty (meaning you can get a recall honored years after the fact usually).

So basically even if my warranty is out they have to honor the recall? Even if I do it years after the recall was announced?

Correct, but remember Clevo isn't recalling these (yet), Intel is recalling the chipsets, so if you are a motherboard fab then you are under recall. Its still up to the motherboard fab's to implement their own solutions for getting their motherboards fixed / replaced. Which we are awaiting to hear about.

Yeah I think I am just gonna keep mine and go with it. I mean sure I have a blu-ray ODD but I won't be using it as much as say...the HDD. So the sata port will deteriorate but not as fast as one with an hdd attached to it. Who knows though maybe some news will come out later on today or tomorrow that will change my mind, but as it goes right now I think I am just gonna keep it.

volume levels of the fans? Or the quality of the 2.1 speakers? How about the functionality of the trackpad?

and does the 8150 use PC 10600 or PC 10666? according to newegg both of these are the DDR3 204 pin, 1333mhz RAM.

So am I the only one who put in an order for one of these today?

I was thinking I can always send it back later on in the year but I need the laptop now, good call/bad call?

    - I assumed I might even get a quicker delivery since people will not want theirs shipped until the new boards come in in April...

If you leave the fan settings to do their thing on their own the volume levels don't go up too high, but turn those babies into full throttle with fn+1 and you get something around a hairdryer on low settings.

Trackpad according to my friend is nothing special, just your average trackpad.

Can't comment on the speakers yet as I have to test those out myself before I can say anything.

As far as the ram goes, I have no clue.

The cnet article said Intel would start shipping at the end of February and won't have full production until April.

This really does suck... I already knew there was going to be a delay of a couple weeks and just said yesterday atleast it wasn't a couple months like when I ordered my first gen i7 laptop... Hopefully I wasn't wrong. We'll see how this really impacts us.

Hopefully Larry will be able to tell us what LPC Digital's approach to this will be. I don't want to email him yet as I'm sure plenty of others have, don't need to fill his inbox as I'm sure he'll contact us anyway.

    Awesome

So what's your take on this recall? Are we ok to keep buying? I was looking at xotic and they said they're still continuing as normal until they hear otherwise. Which I understand, but I don't want to drop 3k on a laptop then either have to send it back or have a problem or whatever

There will be no new shipments until the issue is resolved...period.

So, waiting will just put you farther back in the line.

It's funny mine was ready to ship friday evening (20h22) and began transit on Saturday! Probably/surely the last shipement before the recall!

Ontario, CA, United States 01/29/2011 6:37 P.M. Departure Scan
    01/29/2011 2:56 A.M. Origin Scan
United States 01/28/2011 8:22 P.M. Order Processed: Ready for UPS

If it only affect the Blu-ray, it will probably last a long time before failing, so I do not plan to send it back ASAP as they will be swamped when the recall will begin I guess. So the perfect time would be to send it just before a period I will not need it, like before I go in vacation or else.

Still can't wait to have mine. My only regret is not having the 485M, it was simply too much more at this time.

For those of us that already have this laptop do you think it is smart to return it to our vendor/reseller or would you recommend hanging onto it? I assume the re-calls will be handled by Sager directly correct?

any owners want to post up some pictures of their machine? all i've seen are the few that are one the seller's websites. and of course the few videos on youtube...

i'd like to see more pics of the whole rig before i buy. maybe size comparisons next to an iphone for thickness..? something that shows off the rubberized finish? anything would be nice really

    thanks

I have some but I will snap comparison pics for you tomorrow. I have a Lenovo T61 work laptop and honestly with the lid shut it is thicker than the Sager is. I've owned 2 Asus G-series laptops so the rubber isn't new to me, but the rubber on the trackpad really does take time getting used to. Luckily I rarely have to use it since I carry a mouse with me. As far as weight goes it is not a heavy laptop by any means and mine does not produce hardly any heat when doing normal stuff (I.E. - Not gaming.) Even after playing some games for a couple hours it is barely warm to the touch in certain areas which is very impressive for what is inside this thing.

If you are looking for a 15" laptop this is the best on the market currently IMO and I've owned 3 that are highly regarded in the past year. The only real downside is I imagine like the previous Sager 15" model that when the new GPU's come out later in the year the top dogs won't be able to be used in this one vs. the 17" model.

No, not April. It could still be mid-February if you want to send it back in when the recall program is set up, or if you want to wait it will probably be more like early March.

Just checked my mail today, and it is bad news indeed.
Is it possible that sager, can hook up this defective sata to the esata port instead of the odd. Almost no one will use the esata now that this computer of 2 usb3 ports are present.
Hopefully sager can do this and for me personally it wouodnt matter if it was only the esata affected.
