The 6970m is not coming for NP8130.. It is for NP7280, NP8150, and NP8170.

Looking at this screen makes me wish that I could either get the 485M in the 8130 or a Matte screen in the 8150.

Would it be hard and/or pointless to buy the same screen and replace the one in the 8150? I've never owned a glossy screen and looking at the video review just made me weep a little inside.

Also, any vids of this thing in action yet?

So I'm going to order this PC on Monday, but I'm not sure where to get it. I was going to go through XoticPC.com (I'm a US Resident if anyone's wondering,) but I'm not sure if that's the best place to get it.

Anyone got any recommendations for ordering it in the US?

Also, as far as I can tell from the replies here it's on backorder til mid/late February? I almost considered getting the G53jw-XN1 from Newegg.com (though it has only 4GB as opposed to the NP8130's 8GB and has a 1st Gen i7 Processor but specs are identical otherwise,) and I'm not sure if I should just wait for the 8130 or get the Asus now (considering it's in stock and is actually $100 cheaper.)

    What do you guys think?

Don't jump the gun! Haste makes waste... don't change a solid Sager for a somewhat dubious Asus. I mean, G53 is a good lappy, but it seems to be "****able", you know what I mean? Go to owner's forum and take a look. I'm passing Asus.
You know what? I'll wait for reviews on the new MSI GT680R-008US (1T HDD raid 0 and a gorgeous sound), just to check if the've changed the screen manufacturer. If not so, will get the NP 8130 without blinking.
But it's your call, of course.

You might as well get the newer tech, Sagers are also upgradeable, however it seems you might be a bit limited with the 8130, but there should still be options.

I actually placed and cancelled my first 8130 order with xoticpc.com ,

Justin@xoticpc was very friendly and helpful with all of my pre-sales questions, but after I placed my order I didn't receive any confirmation that my order was accepted, so I called to verify that my order had been received and was told yes, but it's still being processed. I waited for a day and a half without being contacted and finally decided to cancel my order.

I then placed my order with Donald at powernotebooks who called me rightaway to go over my order with me, about 2 hours after speaking with Donald I recieved an email telling me that my credit card was declined. They told me to let them know as soon as I sort out my CC issues and they will continue processing my order. My card had been flagged for fraudulent use, and it took a few hours to sort everything out. I called powernotebooks.com to let them know everything was taken care of, and an hour later I received an email telling me that my CC was approved, and my order was finally confirmed.

I suspect that the processing delays at xoticpc were caused by my credit card being declined, but xoticpc was not keeping me informed of the situation.
And that delayed my order by atleast 2 days, who knows how long it would have taken them to let me know that something is wrong with my card.

    My 2 cents,

    -lotto

Yeah, I'm defintely thinking that patience will truly pay off with this one (not to mention this is a big investment so I may as well get exactly what I want!)

Does PowerNoteBooks.com provide the OS or is there an option to add it to the overall package (ala XoticPC.com?)

I thought about going with a smaller laptop, but then I saw the benchmarks of using GPU acceleration in CS5 and Capture One Pro... And I decided the more graphics cores the better!

I've also had a 12" laptop since 2006... It's great and all, but the graphics card was middle of the road when I bought it (7400go) and within a year I had to crank the graphics details all the way down to play the new games. I'm hoping that by buying a 460m this time around, my card will keep up with games for a little while longer.

For $300 or so dollars difference you are future proofing yourself as the gpu is upgradeable - so instead of shelling out another thousand or so in 4 to 5 years- you can simply change gpu and also switch your cpu to an ivy bridge for much less.

frankly speaking, i dun find the need to pay more for that, cause by the time u decide to buy a new cpu ($400?) + vga card (another $400?) and not to forget ur current $300 which could easily add up to 1k+, u r probably gonna save more by selling ur current laptop and buying a new one in 3 yrs time.

There's definitely different strategies, and I considered the 8130 and just buy an Ivy Bridge laptop in a little over a year. But it is nice to have an upgrade option.

In a couple years the i7-2720 or i7-2820, or possibly an Ivy Bridge more powerful will probably be only about $200-$250, and vga card, for a decent upgrade yeah will probably cost you about $400. But then you sell your old CPU for $50 and GPU for $150 and it's not a bad gig. Granted it is always nice to get a new rig.

This is my first time buying top of the line. While my machine is still in pre-order I think I'm going to upgrade to an i7-2720. In a couple years I will know if this was a good choice or not.

I'm in the exact same boat as you! Here is the dilemma... the 5160 gets you alot more battery life, but the damn glossy screen makes it almost useless to use anywhere except indoors where you can easily get to a power outlet. The 8130 has alot less battery life, but an awesome matte screen. So you can use it anywhere you want, but only for 2-3 hours max at a time.

I sent an email to Sager asking if there was a way to just order a 5160 from them and pay extra for them to install the screen from the 8130. They said they can't do it unfortunately. So I have sent a check to XoticPC for a 5160. I'm actually sort of glad they won't be available till february, it gives me some time to think if I want to stay with the 5160, or just use that check I sent them to pay for most of an 8130.

Just get a matte screen protector. I know it's not the absolute best solution, but it seems to work great with my M11x. I know I'm ordering one as soon as I get my NP8170 and get exact measurements.

I have till 02/01 to decide. The upgradable thing, plus probably a better cooling and better finish gives the NP8150 a slight pull. On the other hand, I can customize the NP8130 at a higher level for less. Dynamically thinking, 8150 takes the advantage, statically thinking, 8130. But I doubt I'm unhappy with any of them.

Does anyone know how long it takes xoticpc to process wire transfers? I sent it in on Wednesday (1/19) and it was received early Friday morning (1/21) eastern time. I don't want to miss the next batch of shipments because it was processed by them after the weekend.

I've had a 13" for the past year and a half and I'm over the size. Though the m11x is still calling my name.

I'm okay with buying a new computer in a couple years. If this lasts me two years I'll be set. This will be my 3rd computer in 3 1/2 years.

This is least amount of research I've done. I was set on business refurb from Dell, but for the same price I went with something new, with newer tech and different from Dell.

I'm used to having a glossy screen, the battery life + weight is what made me question my decision.

I'm going to test out the 8130 and see how I like it, take some pictures of it and decide if I want to switch. As you said earlier there is the 30 day return policy and I won't be out shipping fees, since I live about 2 hours from Sager.

    :)

ibuypower.com has the p151HM1 at the best price with a $50 rebate. The only thing that is different is that they list the display as LCD instead of LED? Does anyone know if this is a typo or if it is a cheaper display?

I am considering either the 5160, 8130, or 8150 but I have multiple concerns.

I would really appreciate some advice! :)

I am trying to decide which one to go with but one thing I am uncertain about is the speakers and sound on each system. From what I understand the 8130 and 8150 have better sound software, a sub-woofer, and 7.1 surround output for speakers/headphones. As my main use of the laptop will be for watching movies and general college work (word/excel/internet) the sound is important. However I don't know how much better it really is. Should I assume that the sound is going to be a lot better for the 8xxx series laptops? Enough to justify the ~300-500 extra cost.

I am curious about how much ram I need? I assume I only need around 4GB, but wonder if it makes sense for my purposes to get 8GB. Would it help in any practical way with multitasking with basic video watching/internet/word/excel type programs, at least enough to justify the extra cost (on the models where it is an option to have less than 8 that is..)

I am also thinking about the extra room and seemingly extra cooling/power available in the 8xxx, especially the 8150. I don't want to have problems with overheating, but I also don't want to spend money on something that is unnecessary since I won't be getting the 485M, or doing any intensive gaming on the 460M or 540M. (The only thing I every play is Runescape and Minecraft, and both don't have to work on the laptop anyways because I have a home pc I use for gaming. Though I would assume they would work on all of the laptops 5160, 8130, 8150 if I tried.)

In general I simply want something that can perform extremely well for my purposes, but not pay excessively for extra things I don't need. I would note for instance that I will very likely be getting a 160GB SSD for any of the laptops due to the improved performance for booting and loading since it seems worth the cost.

    Thanks!

    @sirachman,

You don't need more than 4GB of ram. I use 4GB of ram on my desktop and I have the entire adobe suite open, swapping between programs, copying and pasting huge 300dpi images etc. I doubt you will ever notice a difference between 4GB and 8GB.

In terms of sound, I think it only really depends on if you will use the actual laptop speakers or will you use headphones/external speakers. If you plan on using the laptop speakers, I would opt for the 8130/50... the rumor is the 5160 uses the exact same chassis as the 5125 which put the speakers underneath the laptop (sounds like a pretty bad place). I'd wait and have that confirmed first with one of the resellers who will have actual experience with the 5160 soon.

    The 8150 has the AUO10ED.

From the specsheet, both are similar specwise.

    B156HW1 V.0 and B156HW1 V.1..

They roughly are similar on all specs..

Pretty good. Here's a review of a different model with the same screen. Just scroll down to the display section as that's the only particularly relevant portion. I'm not sure whether the 8130 has the AR coating this model does; I certainly haven't heard anything about it having it.

Anandtech did a review of the Asus n53jf with the B156hw1 v.1 lcd and has this to say...

"Maximum brightness is just above 200nits, which isn’t too good if you’re trying to use it outdoors. The contrast is even worse, checking in at 233:1. We’ve seen plenty of laptops with even worse contrast ratios, but none of them were 1080p LCDs. Color accuracy is at least decent, and color gamut in some respects is better suited to general use than the high gamut displays. We’ve added the sRGB percentage of the Adobe 1998 color space to illustrate this point: 69% of ARGB is basically “ideal” for sRGB use, though in practice I still prefer slightly higher gamuts. Apple’s 77% is probably optimal for casual users. Viewing angles are standard TN panel fare, with severe color shifts from above and below." I'd be very surprised to see these Clevos not using the exact same panel as their Clevo B5130 which is on their inexpensive 5125 and 5135s.

Checked into it a little further on ibuypowers.com website. The screen is the LED backlit, just like the others, so I decided to order it. I also noticed that when I was checking out, it said the warranty was the same as the others too, i.e. Sager, Powernotebooks (1yr parts, 3 yr labor).

ibuypower definetly had the best price I could find. I decided to go with a hybrid hdd and the upgraded network card. Can't wait to get my hands on it!!

If I understand correctly, Sager and XoticPC (and probably others) may have 1yr. parts, 3yr. labor initially, but they allow you to get a 3yr. parts, 3yr. labor warranty. Perhaps that's what Bhima was referring to.

Edit: I will also throw in my interest in the matte screen. My current Acer has a glossy screen and it drives me nuts even indoors. Surprisingly, the battery life with these Sagers doesn't sound much different than my Acer now. Simply browsing the web and word processing gives me 2-3 hours on Windows 7 Balanced profile (C2D T5600, 320GB 5400rpm, 4GB DDR2 800, 9600M GS). If I could get the matte screen on the 8150 or the 470M/485M in the 8130 I probably would have bought already. I may end up getting the 8150 and a matte cover. I'm still holding out some hope for a good price on the AMD 6970M though.

Warranties do give some people added peace of mind. Just don't forget that most computers follow a bathtub failure rate curve (see the following link) The Bathtub Curve and Product Failure Behavior (Part 1 of 2). Basically, all the failures that you most likely will have, should be immediately after your purchase and after that most of the failures you are most likely to have will be in the distant future (years away).

Even if you were to have a failure in 18 months, the labor would still be covered and the parts would be much cheaper by then. My philosophy on warranties has always been like this.....let's say you buy 10 items this year such as a computer, phone, camera, etc. If you purchase extended warranties on all those items you will most likely spend big bucks. Now let's say you don't purchase warranties on any of those items. You then have to ask your self "what is the likely hood that I will spend more money in repairs than I would have on all of those warranties combined?". Statistically, the answer will always be that you would spend less on the repairs. If this were not true, companies would not sell the extended warranties because they would lose money. Also once the company found out that the extended warranty was resulting in a loss for them, they would simply charge more for the warranty until a profit could be made.

We can do a matte screen on the 8150, we just brought them in-stock after reading the feedback from everyone here asking if they could get matte screens on the other models.

So do you guys think it's worth paying extra for a 3yr Parts + Labor Warranty? I'm tempted to because this is a substantial investment (I mean seriously, $1300 is not a small amount of cash,) and I wouldn't want it to screw up on me within a year and be out $1300.

I'll be ordering on Friday (the 28th) so I need to decide this before then. Anyone have any experience with warranties etc.?

Getting the 3yr warranty brings the total to roughly $1500 by the way.
