    ^--^
    Not so fast :)

The Sager NP8130 will only take the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M w/1.5GB GDDR5 now, and it won't support the 470M or 485M because it does not have the thermal solution or a large enough power supply.

So, until a "better" GPU actually comes out in the same thermal and power envelop no one can tell you whether the Sager NP8130 will support it, because there is no way to test it, or to believe anything will really be "better" with the same technical requirements.

Buying the Sager NP8130 with the belief that you could Upgrade to a Better GPU will most likely be a mistake.

If you want the upgradeability get the NP8150 (or 8170 if you want 17")

Any ideas if this will also receive the 485m?... Darn I just can't pass the matte screen! :D

This is my first clevo, and I've heard that these are the most upgradeable laptops out there..

There is absolutely no reason to believe this will not take place with this model with this chassis, thermals, power requirements, and chipset. It is reasonable... ;)

I think NP8130 is a better choice. I don't want another 17" monster. I want to game but also want it to be portable.

Is blu-ray player worth it on 15" laptop?

It isn't about the chipset...it is about the thermal solution and power supply.

Why does the Sager NP8150 have a 180W power supply while the Sager NP8130 has 120W?

Trust me, the Sager NP8130 will not ever support the 485M, or any GPU that requires more than a 120W power supply.

And, until this newer, better GPU that will fit into the 120W power and thermal envelop of the Sager NP8130 comes out and can be tested there is no way to know whether it will work.

Anyone who buys the Sager NP8130 counting on the fact that the GPU can be upgraded to something "better" does so at their own risk, and anyone telling you otherwise...well...

All I am saying is it is reasonable, it has happened to just about all of the Sager / Clevo models in the last 2 years that came with similar thermals and a 120W power supply that upgrades DID HAPPEN. The thermals on the NP8130 is such again that it is reasonable the cards in the future with similar thermal and power needs will come. The pattern in the last 2 years and reason lean me to this.

Of course the 485M or similar cards will not work... :)

I honestly think it will work if we can just get the 180W AC Adapter..

but I'm not sure, and if a 6970m pops up later with a good price, I am going to try it out and see if this model supports it.

For now, it's only the 460m.

    Well you see...
I heard it was similar to the G73, as the surface has a rubber coating (apprently the ports too)
Gona have to think really hard if I want the matte screen or better graphics, so hard to decide

Just recently put my g53jw order on hold, thinking of switching to the 8130 or the new models being announced this week.

Does anyone know what kind of specs the new ones will have? Like a 525m+i7 optimus maybe?

Hey I was looking at a picture over at XoticPC (link is http://www.xoticpc.com/laptop/8130/81305.jpg) If you look at #5 which is the battery pack it seems it is more over to one side (the left)...Does this create a weight discrepancy? If so is this normal? How is it to move it around?

It most likely wont fit in this laptop but it will be a cheaper solution than the 485m in the 8150.

Wait for what? That's pretty much top of the line right now. Can't get any better any sooner. Only thing better is an Intel XM CPU and SLI GTX 485m. If you wait then there will just be something else around the corner.

Well, the AMD GPU will be put on Clevo starting march. I just hope they put something new on NP8130 as well as other models...460M is fast but maybe the newer mid-range amd would be a bit "better."

btw, BF franchise is AMD's game right? I mean, AMD advertises BF games with their new cards right?

I'm a bit skeptical of this claim. AFAIK notebook graphics cards connect over a PCI express bus to the motherboard northbridge chipset which then outputs to a display.

If you have one of these notebooks, does the i7 IGP show up in the device manager? If you disable the Nvidia graphics card, does the IGP work?

So Donald, the 8130 will get an optimus option? Do you have an estimate as to when?

My other question is: If your discrete card dies on you and you have an optimus laptop, would you still be able to use your laptop's integrated gpu until you get the discrete replaced?

Yes and no. As far as I know, MXM has dedicated video output through the connector that is separate from the PCI Express bus. In other words, in a traditional notebook the video coming out of an MXM card is post RAMDAC, LVDS, etc. However, in a switchable GPU situation I believe the framebuffer is essentially copied over the PCI Express bus to the IGP where video is then output through it's RAMDAC/LVDS.
The closest thing I could find to support my claim that MXM has video output as well as PCI Express connectivity are the following links:
    http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/Tech_13.html
    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,1592849,00.asp

I am assuming that if Clevo is not going to use a switchable GPU then they would have disabled the IGP in the motherboard firmware. I'd love to know as soon as someone gets one of these laptops.

Indeed. Optimus is Nvidia's name for their dynamic switchable GPU. It can switch between them on the fly based on GPU load.

Is there any other difference between the NP8130 and the NP8150 than

    1) Power supply
    2) Matte & Glossy

The chipsets seem to be the same, if I can only get a 180W adapter, wouldn't the NP8130 also be able to house the 6970m once it hits?
Have there been limitations in the clevo BIOS regarding GPU upgradeability in the past machines?

No, the Sager NP8130 will not utilize Optimus. The partial quote you selected is referring to the Sager NP5160 and NP5170 that will be released in the next day or two, and they will have Optimus using the 540M.

Yes, if operating properly the integrated card will still display your video if your discrete card should fail.
