Aside from poorer battery life and noise increment, are there an advantages of having a lively fan that goes on full blast when performing duties slighly more demanding than what would be considered light work like installing software, during updates or playing low qualitliy flash videos? .

You keep temperatures low which increases reliability.

I think we get a refresh with 1050 perhaps. 1060 is way to hot. Seing W230SD struggles with gamingtemps on 960m in the higher 80, and the 1060 uses 50% more power it would be a bad decision. Perhaps a P640 would get 1060. The alienware 13 has 1060, but the chassis is much bigger than W230, also it has 2 fans.

There is certainly a gap for such a machine :)

Yes, the Alienware 13 r3 has a footprint similar in size to a standard 15" laptop. It almost makes the W230 look like an XPS 13 with its abnormally wide bezel and extra extended cooling fans behind the hinge.
IMO, the W230 is the most powerful 13" laptop in relation to the overall footprint. It's is actually narrower than the sony Vaio z3 with only has a 3rd gen quad CPU and no intergraded dedicated graphics and the same high as a 13" MacBook air.

The footprint was kept small and it was made thicker where needed.

It's a bit dead around here...

Anyway, I bought a new i7 to upgrade my i5, but the laptop isn't booting. The back light turns on, the heatsink gets hot, but no screen (not on hdmi either). I have (tried to) reset the cmos by taking out the cmos battery, but when I plop my old cpu back in, it boots just fine and my bios settings are still there, so I guess it hasn't actually reset.

    Any tips?

Edit: after a few minutes the fan even kicks on, so I feel like something is happening...

    Edit2:

    System specs:
    (old) i5-4300M
    (new) i7-4700MQ
    8GB Corsair DDR3-1600 (Two sticks)
    Samsung 840EVO 500GB
    Intel wireless-ac 7260

I don't know if the motherboard is the same and compatible with i7 cpu, but assuming it is, you should search for the motherboard reference, for a manual, and maybe you'll find a switch to modify from i5 dual core to i7 quad core cpu..

Also, please provide complete complete cpu models you're using.

Thanks for the tip, I'll see if I can find anything in the manual. I'll also update my first post with the necessary info.

I should note that the 4700MQ isn't listed in the user manual as an official CPU option. However, I messaged Prema, and he ensured my that the CPU should be supported with his bios (which I'm using).

Main difference in cpu is L2 and L3 cache, so if you don't find a cpu switch also check for cache switches. I also have to ask.. Are you sure the i7 cpu works?

I Can't be 100% sure, but I bought it from a reputable supplier, who ensured me it should be working.

I'm not questioning the suppliers reputation but sometimes this could happen, especially if the supplier didn't test it. I have the i7 version of this laptop and because it's a barebone I assume the board is the same. So there's only two issues I see possible, either it's a board configuration issue or the cpu is not working.

(edit) - When I bought it I was given the choice of cpu, storage and ram..

Yeah, I understand, but I have no way of saying for certain the CPU is or isn't working. Supplier says it was pulled from a working laptop.

I can't find anything about switches in either the user- or the repair manual.

The way I see it you have two choices. Either you find a friend with this cpu to test it, or you contact the supplier for a replacement or refund.
I repair laptops, and considering the symptoms you described, I'm inclined to believe the cpu is not working.

Yeach, I think so too. I'll be trying a few more things and then I'll be sending a message to the supplier. Thanks for your help!

Agreed... The CPU should be plug and play and if your laptop isn't booting, something is wrong with the CPU... try a few more things or contact the supplier!

I know I am late but I just saw your posts.
The same thing happened to me with a 4700mq and my w230sd which is weird but I still use the original bios(not prema) so I thought either the bios is incompatible or the cpu is dead.
Now I am not too sure(may be the board is incompatible somehow). So what happened to your 4700mq,did it work?

    Hi all,
Just wanted to know what the options are for getting a @Prema mod for the W230SD. Unfortunately there was no option for Prema partner purchase when I got the machine and it is currently unusable with terrible high temps while just browsing the web - Looks like very high CPU voltage?

Is there a way we can pay for a Prema upgrade?

    Thanks.

A Prema BIOS wont fix something like that. Were temperatures always high? Have you cleaned the heatsink and done a repaste?

    Hi,
I had a different W230x previosuly which was problematic due to the stock high voltage on the cpu - Prema fixed that by allowing cpu down voltage and clock.

I have redone the thermal paste and checked the fan/air intake.

The fan pretty much stays at 100% all the time.

    Thanks.

Have you tried throttlestop or similar programs to apply an undervolt?
