Well when you look at detailed specs of the RAM it will tell you what kind it is. It's not advertised like the size or speed or timings, you typically have to dig a little further and get more detailed specs to find out if its JEDEC or Intel XMP.

Intel does list it as up to 1600mhz but people have had no problem using 1866mhz. Intel often lists max speeds wrong. We've seen it with the other CPU's as well and have had no problem using faster then listed speeds.

When you're looking at RAM, it will be advertised (usually) as either XMP or JEDEC Plug-and-Play. You just need to make sure you're buying the latter on this model, or you'll never see the speed you paid for. Essentially, you just cannot use anything labeled XMP.

1866 or 1600 will both work and have worked for others. Intel's documents don't always list the correct support (the 2630/2670QM are both listed as 1333 only but can do both upgrades as well).

Regardless, the performance increase with 1600 or 1866 RAM is going to be minimal. You'll get ~4% better performance with 1600 compared to stock, and another ~4% with 1866 over 1600. You won't notice this much if at all in everyday use though- just in benchmarks.

I just got a Clevo W150HRQ from RJ Tech. I've installed every driver, and the system works OK, but I cannot seem to get the touchpad to work at all. The Synaptics driver is installed, and it sees a touchpad (in addition to the USB mouse I have plugged in) on the system, but nothing works. I've tried deleting it and re-adding it, nothing. Also I tried to install the driver for the fingerprint reader and it said it couldn't find it. When I was installing Windows the touchpad wasn't working in setup there either, I had to plug in a USB mouse to get through setup. Is it possible the device isn't working, or is there something I'm missing here?

It could very well be that your received a defective touchpad, or the ribbon cable for the touchpad is loose, disconnected, or damaged. If your touchpad wasn't working from the get go it could be any of the above possibilities.

I would probably recommend checking your cable connections to the touchpad first if you are up to the task of digging into the laptop yourself.

If you are not that tech savvy or just not comfortable doing it, go ahead and contact your reseller tech support and see if you can request an RMA to have them service it for you.

Although it is unfortunate to have this happen right out of the box and rare as it may be, these things do happen once in a while.

I tried an Ubuntu live cd and it doesn't work there either. I also noticed the USB port on the right side of the laptop isn't working. Somethings up here. I've done my share of laptop dissection in the past, so I'll open it up and take a look. I was hoping there was something simple I was overlooking!

USB ports are typically tied directly to the mainboard. What items have to tested that port with? Mouse? printer? flash drive? Just asking for the details. :D
Good luck with the dissection, let us know what you find.

well, to be honest, at this point with a good possibility of failed USB port and the touchpad not working are you sure you want to dig into it rather than get an RMA?

Well if you don't need it right away, the Ivy Bridge laptops should be out at some point in the near future. :) If you were to buy that 5165 today and the Ivy Bridge came out shortly after, would you be kicking yourself then and saying something similar?

I have an NP5165. I am very happy with it. The battery life is great, as well as the performance. The only things that can considered detractors are that the power brick is huge, the lid is still thin and flexible, and that the matte screen doesn't upscale as well as the glossy on my old NP5135.

You could probably watch two movies on minimum brightness and a full charge. The gaming performance is good considering the 128-bit bandwidth. I can play most games at 1920x1080 or 1600x900, which both look great. I play Skyrim maxed at 1366x768 and it runs like a dream. It's playable at the max resolution, but the frame rate drops too low in certain areas. Like most hardware, the software holds the hardware back. I expect performance to improve over time as new drivers are released. :)

Hey there guys. I recently purchased a W150HR* and followed this thread for a number of reasons, mostly so I could get a grip on GT555M overclocking and the availability of a custom BIOS.

I was able to find a custom bios with additional features unlocked (word to the wise... DONT disable hyperthreading) and further modded it by replacing the vbios with one with additional gpu voltage. The gpu now runs at .9125 which allowed me to clock up to 750mhz and reach a 3dmark 2k6 score of just over 13k.

Anyhow, without further adieu here is the link for the modded bios:

    W15HRM.09.9125vbios.rom

Please tread lightly in the bios (I did not do the initial mod/unlock, but have found some problems with the unlocked features) so you don't introduce difficulty you don't want/shouldn't have to deal with. This bios is for those of you out there that want to squeeze out every bit of additional graphic performance.

Adding some quick search tags for those who are Googling for this like I was:
w150hrm w150hrq vbios voltmod unlock gt555m overclock voltage bios

also for the bios upgrade, does it matter what brand we bought it from (mines prostar) i don't want to screw it up by using a different brand's bios.

The different sources for this laptop won't create proprietary bios modules since they aren't the OEM. That said you can do plenty of damage to a system with a custom bios so be smart and have a backout plan if something does go wrong.

Just send an email to your retailer or give them a call. They can probably mail you a new one, possibly even at no charge. :)

Yes, it does matter- but not by retailer brand. Your model probably shipped with either the Clevo bios (it should say StyleNote on the bios splash screen), or a Sager bios (it will say Sager most of the time). Stay with whatever one you have. The Clevo bios is usually posted to the bios thread on the forum. For Sager bios, you need to contact your retailer.

Trying to choose a USB hub to reduce cable clutter/# of connections when using external monitor/speakers at home. Is anyone using Toshiba's new top-of-the-line PA3927U-1PRP USB 3.0 hub with a W150HM? Would kinda like to know that I'm getting what's advertised before dropping $160...

    Hi guys,

Is it normal to be getting better performance in CoD4 then CS:S? My old desktop, which was far inferior, could run CS:S at a MUCH higher framerate...which is surprising, and disappointing. I am getting 30-60fps in CS:S with everything at medium, no AA, no dynamic lighting....similarly TF2 runs extremely poorly.

And yes, they are set to use the 555m.

Please look and see if you have this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Hotkey\Service.exe

I ran Malwarebytes yesterday and I am sure that this is a false postive, but just the same please check and see if you have Service.exe in

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Hotkey\Service.exe

    Sevice.exe has a created date of 9/4/2009 @ 1:03 PM.

The last time I ran Malwarebytes on 3/20/12 it did not flag this file.

I am sure that this is part of the Hotkey application and this file was installed when the Hotkey drivers/programs were installed off the installation CD, but I would like to get it verified. On the web I found that there was a trojan back in Windows ME and XP that was named service.exe.

    Hey guys,
I was cleaning my Mythlogic Pollux 1455 when I saw its W150HRM board has an unused 3G/msata mini card connector. After giving the manual ( http://www.pcw.fr/pdf/W150HRM.pdf ) a quick check, it appears this mini-PCI express slot is wired to (USB2/Sata3).

Could anyone confirm if I could use it to install a msata ssd drive?

Magicrice, im using a 19v 90W as a secondary travel brick. It works perfectly, but I wouldn't trust it through a gaming session. As long as the transformer's output is 19 volts you should be fine.

Edit: Reading the amazon reviews, this brick seems to have an output of 22.5volts... dont buy it. Look for a 19volts 90Watt one, (the original clevo brick is 19v,120W.) Remember, Watts=Volts*Ampere

Can anyone recommend a smaller, more portable power brick that works with the w150hrm? I don't game, but I do run on AC adapter in "high performance" mode pretty much all the time.

I thought I read a long time ago that when buying an AC adapter you have to make sure the amperage is correct or else the device might try to draw more than the adapter is capable of and break something. Not sure if that is correct or if it applies to laptops (maybe battery acts as a buffer?).

I got my 90w brick from mythlogic, just email them (sales (at) mythlogiccorp.com) and I'm sure they will be glad to sell you one. Most of the ASUS 90w bricks should be 19v as well.

In my experience, 90w@19v is more than enough for the intel GPU in high performance. If you want to use the GT555, I recommend using the 120w brick.

If I have it right then, W=V*A:

If the laptop draws more watts than the brick can offer. => The brick overheats into oblivion.
If the brick's output voltage is not the one required by the laptop (19 volts for the W150hrm). => The motherboard fries.

As long as you have the right voltage and keep an eye on the bricks temp you should be ok. Last time I burnt a brick, the metal plug that connects to the laptop got so hot it melted through its plastic casing.
