Temps are pretty high for this lappy with an Intel Core i7-2630M. Normal temps should be around 80-90C under load.
Review Schenker XMG A501 Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
-
-
Also, that review refers to the laptop as W150GNM instead of W150HNQ. What's with that? -
-
Maybe I should have opted for that TIM?
-
Well hell, I was completely wrong thinking the 5160 would run cooler than an 8130. After that review of the Schenker, I'm a little worried about my thermals and the noise levels on the fan. I wonder if we could replace the stock fan with a better one?
-
Running SC2 on my 8130, my CPU doesn't go above 60c and GPU doesn't go above 55c. The palmrests are very cool and my legs sometimes get cool from the air being pushed out. Then again, I'm not what I consider a heavy user.
-
You would probably be fine under light load. Don't forget you went for the NP5160 because of the battery life too. If you were expecting a laptop to run cool while gaming or under heavy load, then that's most likely not going to happen.
Hey.. some people received their NP5160 right? Give us some temps please. -
Well hopefully that was under synthetic load like Prime95 or OCCT and the like. I'm hoping to do some Source gaming on this thing.
-
when I can receive the laptop if I order today? do I need to wait for a month to get it?
-
Most likely in 2-3weeks.
-
So anyone get theirs yet? Can we get some personal accounts on the sound and temps?
-
Well I was basing off the fact that the 8130 runs cool under load. Yeah, I know their chassis's are different but I figured that since the 460M is using double the power and, therefore creating double the heat, I was hoping it was going to be a wash. Oh well, I have a notebook cooler for a reason anyways. -
High noise and bad speakers?
I think we need to order a good headphone set with our new notebook
Actually, I wonder if those noise and temperature problem are common to all Clevo W150 machines. Couldn't it be due to a less quality build?
I can't understand a reason for Clevo developing an environment for the brand new intel processors using a lame fan... -
I honestly haven't done too much research into this, but does anyone have an idea if/how a DIY ViDock setup would work with this laptop?
-
-
ahhh i've been checking this thread like every 10 minutes... I can't wait! Mine's supposed to be here on Wed. and I ordered 1/18.
To those looking to install Linux on it I will let you know how my progress goes (specially with optimus). I'm going to install FC14 on it, and hope to switch to Gentoo once gcc 4.6 is released. -
-
Its mini not full length. -
i'll be interested to hear how the hardware works in linux too, aiguofer. i only ordered a week ago, and i'll probably be running ubuntu on it when it arrives.
hmm.. maybe that quad core will convince me to switch back to gentoo though. i got tired of updates taking days to compile on my pidly pentium m, but i guess it won't take an hour to emerge the latest firefox anymore. -
I got my Lappy today, and have been running tests ^_^ Here are my specs:

-
Highly unlikely as the Mini PCIe SSD's generally need a SATA interface on the PCIe slot, which most laptops don't have
-
-
Wow, 83C and 88C for a few games? That is not looking good. And I didn't even get the IC diamond TIM. Oh and how loud is it during idle or casual usage?
-
I'm planning to get the i5 version which isn't quad core so is the 4gb ram not available or something
Sorry I'm pretty new to all this so much thanks for any help! -
what about idle temps?
Did you find the notebook comfortable to use? -
I don't think the fan is too loud, but it does make noise. I'm used to noise, though, so I'm probably not the best judge.
Temps idle around 40C to 43C. And even at the high temps, the keyboard area of the laptop only gets slightly warm.
I think the 1333 RAM is only for the QM processors. I guess the dual core processors use 1000 RAM.
I've seen a bunch of complaints about the keyboard, but it seems fine to me. But I've been using a keyboard on a Dell that's been falling apart for the last couple years, so again, I might not be the best judge. One complaint though is the up arrow key is directly below the Enter key, so sometimes I hit it when going to hit the Shift key. And the right arrow key is where the 0 should be on the numpad. However, I find myself adjusting already, so I don't think it's a big deal.
Considering that this can be a sub-$1000 laptop at a lower configuration, but will still have a ton of power, I think the lackings in ergonomics are acceptable. I am very happy with this laptop. -
Hrmm... those temps are a bit toasty, once I get mine, I'll try and do a few tests with and without a notebook cooler (though my notebook cooler is a cheapo one).
-
And btw, the 2630QM can only run 1333 RAM, while 2720QM upwards can run 1600. But really, what difference does that speed make?
-
No, it won't make much of a difference. The biggest deal I guess would be memory bandwidth but DDR3 1333 should already hit 20+ in dual channel so it's fine.
Also, did anyone else get their notebook? I'm really waiting for a quantified account of loudness. I really don't want this thing to be anything but whisper quiet while I'm just working on a 12 slide powerpoint or while web browsing. For gaming or intensive work it's understandable but if idle fan sound is unbearable then forget it... -
What that is referring to is the speed of the RAM, not the amount. With the i3/i5/i7 you can get whatever amount of RAM you want, 4gb, 8gb etc, at 1333MHz
BUT, only the higher-end quad cores i7-2720QM and the i7-2820QM processors can accept the faster 1600Mhz RAM. -
although i've seen benchmarks where there are no appreciable gains by 1600 over 1333 MHz DDR3 Ram. 1333 over 1066 MHz already has little difference in practice.

Here is more info and a link to a maufacturer STEC | SSD | Ultra Mobile Solid State Drive for Ultra Mobile PCs, PCI Expess Mini Card - hope this can do for the NP5160.
-
Here is the actual product Newegg.com - OCZ OCZSSDMPES-64G Mini PCIe 64GB Mini PCIe SATA Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - it will work with any pcie slot provided bios supports it. Note it has an internal sata controller. Will not work without it unless for other small notebooks that have separate controllers on their pcie slot.
-
I got mine in today. Screen is small but I am getting used to it. The default was 125%dpi, but I changed it back to 100%. If the smallness gets to me I'll revert the DPI.
I thought the glossy screen was going to be annoying but it hasn't been so far surprisingly. Still need to take it out to a coffee shop.
Optimus was a little ficky, probably because of either me setting up dual monitor or windows was updating stuff. A reboot fixed all my issues, hopefully nothing else comes up.
Did notice the left front area was hot under load as I was running the assessment test, as the notebookcheck review pointed out. Fan noise is noticeable under load but it doesn't bother me too much. On idle it's fine, though as of this typing the fan is still running at a low speed. Probably wouldn't want to play SC2 on a plane (provided I had an outlet).
I've had it unplugged for around an hour or so and the battery dropped only 20% with the display set at 50% Wifi is turned off though. Results are not scientific but I would say you could get at least 4 hours out of this with wi-fi for light browsing and office work.
Overall I am happy with this notebook so far; we'll see how it holds up. I want this to last me a good while.Attached Files:

anyone knows where I can find accesories for NP5160?
-
What are the temperatures like at 100% CPU usage? It would be a plus if I could run the NP5160 24/7 at 100% CPU usage(I currently have a much worse laptop doing so, and the CPU and GPU are at 95C each, even with the fan sounding like a hair dryer on low). Also, is Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.00GHz really more powerful than AMD Phenom II X6 1100T as http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html states? I currently have an Intel Core i7 720QM @ 1.60GHz which can run 6 of a program, but the AMD Phenom II X6 1100T has been reported to run 20 of the program. Would the Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.00GHz be able to run at least 20 of the program since it's listed higher than AMD Phenom II X6 1100T on the web site?

anyone tried any games on this,, are there any lags at graphics set to fhd, also what are the temps, how much noise the fan makes during gaming,
is it any better than 8130(terms of heat, noise nd battery)??? would be great if someone can post some reply... -
The 8130 is a whole lot faster with the 460m and the mxm slot is available for later upgrades vs np5160-the gpu is soldered to the mb (grrrrr). But price wise- this is very economical and better battery life with nvida optimus- but it can still handle gaming well not as much as the 460m.
depends on what your needs are- -
thnxx for d reply,, i need it to work for 3 yrs, i guess 8130 is better choice,,any comparison wrt. heat, sound and build quality ?
-
What temperature forces a system shutdown? I think I may be getting that, though I haven't had a chance to monitor the thing. Twice now I've left the laptop running 8 threads in Prime95 and the FurMark burn-in test at the same time, and when I've come back the computer had shut down, with Windows complaining that it had shut-down unexpectedly when I booted it back up. Both times I'd left I'd seen temps up to 98C, but they seemed steady. If the max is 100C, that could explain it. I should probably get a cooler :/

Is np5160 comes with a BD softwarr to play BD movies
-

-
How is the build on this notebook? Like, the material. Is it a fingerprint magnet? From the pictures, it looks kind of metallic-like.
