I'm intrested in the functionality of the 5160's built in audio. Does it have "what you hear" is it working will with things like skype? Am I going to need an external sound card for editing MP3's?

I've got serveral cases. A minimalist one that only has room for the laptop and power supply, a larger case that carries the laptop and all the accessories and small items I might use, and a generic backpack when I need my hands free. I'm hoping the next maching will fit in those cases to preserve that investment.

    Thanks, friend! :D

along the other points that I missed while I was too busy enjoying my first moments with the notebook:

Yeah, the back of the lid is glossy, but not crappy-glossy. It looks fairly nice with a subtle squares pattern.

The glossy screen is awesome! Magnificent collors!!
It is very glossy though, indoor usage is fine but I don't even wanna try it outdoor.
It also has a black glossy frame which I cant understand...

The overall feel is really solid and even being all plastic it don't seem "cheap". Veru nice structure.

I haven't made any relevant tests, just installed the system, drivers (there are a lot of them!) and apps...
Haven't finished set up my system yet, I'm downloading a Linux media right now.

I think those are trivial tasks. This or any other "newer" notebook would be able to handle mp3 editing...

By "what you hear", I think it's a matter of software, not hardware, so any laptop could do this.

This NP5160 should do. It is not bigger than most widescreen 15incher and its power brick is small too.

Someone has posted a photo of it some pages ago.

I heard that NP5160 has heat issue.
To overcome this problem, which notebook cooler can effectively c00ls down this lappy ?

My last three years has been with a Dell D820, a machine that served me well except I had to get a SB PCMCI audio card to do audio editing. Manufacturers often don't bother to give the specs of the onboard audio. Are you aware of any comprehensive user reviews of the 5160? I'm leanig towards that maching at the moment to replace this old Dell.

I know what you mean. I've had problems with sound boards before.
I haven't seen any review on that aspect of the NP5160 or similar Clevo.

I've got one NP5160 here and its audio board is "Realtek High Definition Audio". It must be the simplest option one could find these days, but even then, it should be better than what you've got 3 years ago.

cocci has already posted some temps. http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...evo-w150hnq-owners-lounge-59.html#post7309164 is his post for mission in Black Ops.

Shared heatsink and smaller than 8130 (which is more aimed at serious over casual gaming) means more heat and less air flow.

Just got mine delivered a few hours ago. Everything was perfect! Looks like all the drivers and such were already installed, and the matte screen looks beautiful. I can't even tell its a matte, not like I would know how to anyways :).

No issues to report, ran Avatar beautifully on the intel GPU...PowerDVD isn't able to use the 540 apparently? Heat isn't bad at all. I will see how it does tommorow at work with compiling some nasty projects.

Any recommendations on a better blu-ray playback suite?

Decided to do some temp tests with certain scenarios. For the CPU I used Prime95, for the GPU Folding @ Home. Note these are by no means scientific, and I did it in a fairly short timespan. Also note that I do have my notebook propped up in the back by one dvd case.

I simulated no turbo by setting the maximum CPU speed in the power settings to 99%.

I've linked to a separate page because they're kind of large.

    http://home.earthlink.net/~quantumslip/images.html

    Notes:
-Turbo Boost does contribute some to the CPU getting hot
-Heavy CPU or GPU-only load does have an effect on the other
-CPU+GPU does result in CPU throttling when the temp reaches 96C or higher. Not sure about GPU throttling, I didn't have the utility running to check that.

hm i see... the shared heatsink is kind of unexpected.

however, heat should only be an issue when both the cpu and gpu are running at full throttle, which for me isn't that often provided that dvd/blueray playback isn't going to bring this thing to full capacity. will still consider a cooler though for when the gf wants to play games on it.

still, is there a way to downthrottle/undervolt the gpu so that it won't get too hot? i don't think it is necessary, but you never know.

I have a Zalman nc2500plus. I have to say I am very impressed with mine. These things keep the laptop super cool and very stylish as well as. It won't be a bad decision at all, though the price is a little more than a lotnof the cooler out there

Lol, even though my 8130 does not have heat problems, I will still buy the SF-19, the cheapest of which is $80. And this is top-of-the-line, so don't complain for a $40 Zalman :p

But that sf-19 is super heavy... definitely not portable. Besides with a price tag like that i would rather hire someone to blow air into the went lol

Lol, yeah I know...But I'm not looking for portability. I'm looking for sheer power, and the CF-19 delivers in that aspect. My laptop will just be sitting in place for about 95% of the time, and whenever I'm moving it around, I can just use the excellent cooling system.

Plus, if the build quality is good enough, the SF-19 will last me for multiple laptops, in which case it will be an excellent investment :)

I'm having a curious "issue" with mine. Whenever I plug in/unplug the laptop, the screen will flicker several times before returning to normal. This also happens when I am restarting (plugged and unplugged), but nothing seems out of the ordinary otherwise.

    Any ideas? :D

Actually, 1080p is discernible. There's a certain PPI ratio that the human eye can perceive (Iphone 4 was close to it) but this 17.3 inch screen certainly isnt (Edit: or even the 15 inch). You also have to take into account how far your face is from the screen, 2 feet usually in my case. I don't want to do the math but you definitely can tell. It's unfortunate the glare and view angle is so bad but not worth $140 extra or whatever.

I've been busy but trying to use my laptop whenever I can... The speakers actually put out really nice, though tinny sound. Again it has to be in a place where the sound can escape well such as hanging over the edge of a desk. I am noticing a slight rattle out of the left one at max volume. So... exactly like my old laptop speakers lol!

The touchpad driver is nuts. There's a maze hidden in it, you have to move a dot through the maze by clicking and dragging, meanwhile scrolling because it's enormous. Doubt I will ever take the time to solve it. If you make the one finger scrolling region on the right (u-d scrolling) too small, they both dissapear and the entire touchpad becomes a u-d scrolling region. This is a bug so just be careful of it. If you ever mess something up though, hit default on the bottom of whatever screen it is.

nah there's a chart out there that gives viewing distance to see the difference between the two based on screen size. 15" doesn't cut it. I'm sure it would be less than 2 ft away depending also on eyesight

    i did the math.

the fhd screen on the 15.6" is 141 ppi

if you have 20/20 vision and sit with your eyes 18 inches from the screen, you should be able to discern 191 ppi. in the 15.6 form factor, that works out to ~2592x1458 resolution.

most people are actually better than 20/20. some are lucky enough to see 20/12. they would be able to discern 318 ppi or 4320x2430 resolution.

i followed the explanation given here.

Hey guys, I am having issues with the webcam in my brand new NP5160. The colors are very strange, kinda black/greyish.

I have tried to adjust the Video Capture Pin and Video Capture Filter (in bison cam) but neither of them improved the image quality.

Has anyone had to deal with a similar issue? The webcam is important to me as I use it a lot for skype-ing.

    Thanks for ur 2 cents

So I just got my laptop in today...
and unfortunately I have no clue about computers at all. I ordered it w/ no operating system installed w/ drivers & utilities CD.
I put the drivers & utilities CD in, but it says 'invalid disk'. I'm most likely doing something wrong... anyone want to point me in the right direction please?

    Thanks!

I put it in and then it lead me to a page to choose between the option of 'upgrading' or 'customizing'. I get an error when I choose upgrade or custom... It's like.. STOP 0000000X4 or something like that.

Lol. Okay so I realized uh.. my Windows 7 disks are upgrade only.=_=
But then my Windows XP is for clean install... yet it doesn't work. It says:
A problem has been detected... Remove any newly installed hd or hd controllers.. check your hd to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Tech info: STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D663C,0C0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000).
Was I supposed to do something with the drivers & utilities disk?

Edit-- Okay nevermind. I changed the SATA control/config to IDE and it's working lol.

You have to have a copy of windows first of all. Then you need to boot from the cd/dvd drive with the windows cd/dvd in the drive. Installation is very easy it might ask you a couple questions, and what hard drive to install to (obviously the main drive on your laptop) and thats pretty much it. So if you don't have a copy of windows now, go grab yourself a copy. If you need anymore help there are plenty of step by step walkthroughs on youtube, but I assure you-- installing an OS is easy as pie.

Hey guys!! I just ordered my 5160 last week (had a few billing verification problems but not xoticpc's fault). I got the 1080p matte 95% gamut screen, the IC diamond thermal paste, the 2630qm and intel wifi card and everything else default. I'm really excited about this laptop, performance and screen is going to amazing, I just ditched my HP dv7 sandy quad due to the cougar point issue so this will be a very worthy replacement. I'm completely new to Clevo laptops and community so I just really wanted to say that wow these rock, looking forward to becoming a Clevomaniac.

    So I have a couple Questions/Comments:
    1. Can anyone comment on the quality of the soundcard? I'm talking about for music playback, my hp dv7 beats audio edition laptop had terrible sounding speakers (as do the 5160 from what I hear) but they did have a great sounding audio output for headphone use, I typically listen to music through foobar 2000 with bit accurate streaming enabled and either my Grado 225 or ipod earbuds.
    2. Can you tell me where to buy the hard drive caddy? I wanted the optical drive because I'll need it every so often and I want to fit an ssd for the boot drive and purchase the caddy to house the storage later. I purchase my 5160 from XoticPc I didn't find any in the accessories list.

Hi guys, I've had the NP5160 for about two weeks and it's been pretty great so far. However, I have one concern. I constantly hear the fan and think it's pretty audible even under a light load such as just Firefox and iTunes open. Is anyone else having this problem or is this normal?

You might want to open up task manager to see if the components are being stressed...though I can't imagine that they are with FF and iTunes. Maybe there are too many hidden processes?

    Hi,

Is there any way to lower the maximum temperature that turbo-boost will allow the cpu to run to? Would it be possible to do this only on battery?

    Thanks.

I wouldn't believe on a table over my experience just because someone made it.

I can't follow most of lllars explanation either, as I don't have this kind of knowledge, but it goes with my experience.

I made an interesting (and personal) experiment last night.

After some days on the Full HD screen, I got back and used my older laptop with 1440x900 resolution. It looked really bad and wasn't just about the size of things, it was about the overall smoothness of the images.

Yes, if you're viewing something in FHD then the screen will be able to represent all the pixels. But you do have to be at a certain distance to really see the difference
