Not true at all. For example Cyberpunk 2077 (installed on the main SDD) is loaded in half a time than before. The PCI-E 4.0 does his job quite well.

I've not really seen cyberpunks load times benchmarked. I don't remember being particularly long on my drive.

CP2077 takes like 5 seconds to load on a PCIe 3.0 NVMe drive, not sure cutting that in half is really worth it unless you play the game so much that 2.5 seconds matters in the long run. :p

Microsoft is developing DirectStorage for Windows. It will bring SSD and I/O optimizations to PC gaming. Specifically, it will enable multiple priority levels for I/O and more sophisticated I/O requests.

Nvidia is developing RTX IO, which works in conjunction with DirectStorage. This tech leverages GPU processing power to manage lossless decompression at extremely high speeds, that might overwhelm a CPU. This greatly improves texture and asset streaming capability, makes virtual texturing more practical, and optimizes VRAM usage.

Nvidia has stated that RTX IO is already capable of using more bandwidth than current SSDs can provide.

Edit: This tech is set to debut sometime in 2021 or 2022.

It's a bit strange. For my personal experience, the loading time for both Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin's Creed Valhalla (the second one less the first one) is clearly better on the 980 Pro than on the 970 Evo.

However, I don't know what configuration has used the benchmarker in the video, so.. who knows?

Does this apply also to the actual generation of video cards? Or only for the future?

According to the article below, it will work with RTX 30 series. But there aren’t many details.

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/rtx-io-gpu-accelerated-storage-technology/

Edit: MS DirectStorage will work with PCIE 3.0 NVMe SSDs and Directx 12 GPUs.

We will have to see how those features perform and what the performance gain is from responsiveness vs bandwidth.

I figured that Prema, Obsidian tools, or some other application would allow user access to change, and modify the LCD overdrive settings embedded on the X170 LCD controller.

The videos of people gaming with the X170 SM-G sure look good to me. I couldn't perceive a corona or video quality distortion. If it was that big of a problem on the SM-G I would expect lots of people would be putting that info out there.

And if that was the case Clevo would have probably released some sort of patch or update for it.

There is not configuration in Clevo's software or otherwise. In the service manual for the X170SM the Overdrive control is wired to a GPIO on the PCH so it may be possible to configure with some experimentation.

I do not think the LG panel used on the X170KM has this issue, FWIW. It's monitor ID is LGD065B. On the left is my LG Nano IPS 27 inch display with Overdrive forced ON, you can clearly see the blue tinge. On the right is the built in panel, which does not have the issue. Sadly because there is a panel lottery you may also get an AUO 144hz panel which could still have the issue.

For those curious, attached is a dump of the 1.07.01 (Sager variant) BIOS setup menu with hidden options. Sadly nothing mentioned of LCD Overdrive control but there is a MUX switch option interestingly.

Maybe a MUX switch is planned for the next revision of the X170. That's the last thing missing from this laptop, and the addition of a MUX switch would make it perfect.

Maybe the KM-G already has this function but we don't know how to use the switch.

In any case, this looks promising.

Have any of you had an issue with 4 ram sticks installed you get a black screen and no post.
RGB is lit and the fans go from normal to high and then back to normal.

Thanks will give that one a shot, I can boot with 3 sticks in but not 4 doesn't matter about stick order either.

    Tried and no luck.

Update: the two slots under the keyboard works fine, the two near the m.2's work fine doesn't matter which stick is in there either.

However i did noticed when i removed the two under the keyboard to run 2 where the m.2 slots it says about nvram reset however it didn't say this when i ran just the two under the keyboard.

Update: I managed to get it to boot past POST with 4 Sticks however hit BSOD walls.

If i place ram in the following order it boots

    • Slots 2+4 (Works)
    • Slots 1+3 (Works)
    • Slots 2+4+1 (Works)
It doesn't matter if i place in the 4GB Stick from the order in with one 8GB stick it will boot fine, i have rotated all sticks and it works fine till the 4th slot is filled then it will just display a blank screen.

Overdrive is nowhere as bad on the SM as on your LG, but still noticable if you look for it :)

I have watched this video of the SM with 144 Hz panel and I did not see overdrive caused overshoot/corona effect:

Maybe 144 Hz panels are really not affected.

@putino and @MD9787 were nice enough and recorded the screens of their KM laptops with 300 Hz panels. They are a bit short, but enabling repeat in Youtube allowed me to check them for overdrive:

To be honest, after watching both for a while, I did not see corona effect. Maybe Clevo optimized Overdrive or completely disabled it? Would not be the first from Clevo to secretly disable Overdrive in a new model. Perfect example is the P775 series. P775DM3-G had horrible corona effect/overshoot with it's 75 Hz IPS panel, however P775TM1-G was fine with a 144 Hz panel.
Maybe Clevo disabled overdrive for the 300 Hz panel too in the KM series ?

Thanks for your input fellow members, As i was going to purchase some faster ram sticks at a later time, decided to simply use 16GB out of the 32GB for now, then purchase a 32GB 16GB x2 kit later on.

@Papusan the sticks i was trying to use where SK hynix HMA41GS6AFR8N-TF I had a set in the same batch with the following timings
    Code:
    1066 MHz 16-15-15-36 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 50-278-171-118-6-4-6-23 (RC-RFC1-RFC2-RFC4-RRDL-RRDS-CCDL-FAW)
    1066 MHz 15-15-15-36 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 50-278-171-118-6-4-6-23 (RC-RFC1-RFC2-RFC4-RRDL-RRDS-CCDL-FAW)
    1037 MHz 14-14-14-35 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 49-270-166-115-6-4-6-22 (RC-RFC1-RFC2-RFC4-RRDL-RRDS-CCDL-FAW)
    962 MHz 13-13-13-32 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 45-251-155-106-6-4-6-21 (RC-RFC1-RFC2-RFC4-RRDL-RRDS-CCDL-FAW)
    888 MHz 12-12-12-30 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 42-232-143-98-5-4-6-19 (RC-RFC1-RFC2-RFC4-RRDL-RRDS-CCDL-FAW)
    814 MHz 11-11-11-27 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 38-212-131-90-5-4-5-18 (RC-RFC1-RFC2-RFC4-RRDL-RRDS-CCDL-FAW)
    666 MHz 9-9-9-22 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS) / 31-174-107-74-4-3-4-14 (RC-RFC1-RFC2-RFC4-RRDL-RRDS-CCDL-FAW)

They wasn't XMP based ones either. However system is booted, new OS installed on my Original M.2 SSD for OS and its running pretty sweet right now just with 16GB. Only thing i needed to do was to re organise my entire desk it sits on due to the PSU's.

@DRevan My panel is 144hz using an LGD065B screen will do some testing shortly just installing everything back on again.

Update for @DRevan i am not seeing any issues with the panel i have in terms of ghosting etc.

Another question best way to lock the CPU tdp as the CPU is drawing 154w on a 65w SKU. I do have CCC installed but no Overclocking support for CPU on my i5 11400.

I expect this is peak power consumption over PL2. Try reduce PL2 until you're happy.

Thanks @Papusan , will gingerly start tweaking with TS tomorrow. Getting some nice frame rates in COD:BCW 100fps maxed out no overclocks on GPU. Then its time to figure how to remove CCC but keep Fans LED and Power software.

Just a quick note for anyone wanting to run Linux on the X170KM.

Standard BIOS boots Ubuntu 20.04.2 just fine, using Kernel 5.8 and Nvidia driver 460.73.1. You will want the kernel parameter "acpi_osi=! acpi_osi=Windows 2015" to get your display backlight and likely trackpad working.

Also for speakers to work add "options snd-hda-intel model=clevo-p950" to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.

So I have started to tweak laptop with Throttle stop.
FIVR is locked (No option I can find in bios to unlock it), however just using TPL I have managed to drop the temps on idle from 60c to high 40's, simply dropping PL2 to 100.

Will see what its like in bench marks now.

Sent from my SNE-LX1 using Tapatalk

Update: As expected i lost a few points on FS 1000 in total however its not a biggy.

For people wondering about Resize BAR, my PCS build has it enabled after installing the latest GPU driver.

These are the 3 flags in Nvidia Profile Inspector responsible for ReBar support:
    NVPI.PNG

You can use that to enable ReBar in games that don't have official ReBar support as well.

It's enabled for me as well with the latest driver. I've experienced better FPS in Valhalla as well as in Cyberpunk 2077 after the latest update.

Some resellers can disable that command.

Is there any test where the 144 hz panel was used ?
I am interested in the response time of that panel. Is it worth getting the 300 hz one instead ?
I will be honest, when I had the p775tm with 144 hz panel I have seen some microstuttering when a game reached 144 hz. This was probably because Vsync because G-sync got disabled at 144 fps.

I have bought the x170sm with 240 and later 300 hz panel and besides the previously mentioned overdrive issue games that I have played were worse...Metro 2033 redux, the division, Alan wake, all only showed minor stuttering at 144 fps, however with the SM they showed stuttering all the time, like if G-sync was not as smooth as with the 144 hz panel. (Was worse with G-sync off).

So I was thinking maybe the 144 hz panel would be enough, expesially since it seems the SM did not have the overdrive issue with the 144 hz panel.

Anyone here with the 144 hz panel ? Is it smooth ? Any reason why the 300 hz panel is a better choice ?

A question regarding CPU compatibility: can we use any Comet Lake cpu on this laptop? Even an i3 or Pentium Gold?

I wonder if it is possible to build this barebone so it only needs one power adapter.

As far as I'm concerned, you can use any 10th gen CPU in this laptop. I don't see any reason that one wouldn't work.

Regardless, you need both power adapters plugged in to get the full performance of the laptop. There is some stupid hardware check that disables battery charging if there is only one adapter plugged in, and performance is limited to what you'd get while on battery power. This happens even if one adapter is enough to power all the hardware installed in the laptop.

According to the service manual i5-11400 and up. I would highly suggest getting a K series CPU so Overclocking can be enabled in the bios - this is important because it ALSO unlocks undervolting which is a must on these processors.

Even if you have a 65W CPU and the RTX 3060 it will still need two AC Adapters to charge the battery. If you want to reduce the travel weight a bit I am fairly certain the MSI GE66 230W Delta AC Adapter can work with the X170KM so you could pick up a pair of those which will be lighter than dual 280W.
