There are no "master" or "slave" settings for a SATA drive. There might be a drive letter conflict if it's failing to format in Windows, try changing the drive letter before formatting. You could also try formatting the drive from outside of windows. There is probably a program available from the manufacturer's site that you can boot from a usb stick to "secure erase" the drive. What is the make and model of the drive?

Thanks, I will try that. It's the stock 750gb HDD, not sure of the maker, I don't have the laptop with me at the moment.

I will be eventually. Finally got around to installing a ~480GB SSD, partitioned off 300GB for windows, balance will be linux along with using the 750GB hdd for storage.

That said that's as far as I've gotten so far, still need to build a bootable USB stick for win8 install & drivers and then again for linux install... Not sure yet what distro I'll use this time around as I have been using Ubuntu for a while until I've recently decided maybe it's time to try Fedora or something again... Debian's right out as it's a PITA to work with given their dislike of proprietary drivers, while they may be fine for simple devices they pretty well suck for more complicated things, e.g. GPUs.

(Still need to install linux on the 8250-s as well, did win7 pro x64 already on the ssd, but it's a tiny one, 128GB, so I'm planning on just adding grub and the linux install on one of the data drives, the 750GB(7200RPM) or the 1TB(slower 5400RPM 7mm)... still wanting to maybe switch it over to UEFI boot/GPT too...

Does anyone know why I can't access all the Nvidia control panel settings? The only thing available is 3d settings, and it's very irritating.

What settings are you looking for? Most of the resolution/refresh rate settings are under Intel control panel, not NVIDIA. NVIDIA only has optimus stuff.

Did windows 8.1 update go smoothly for everyone? Any driver issues? I will be going away for a 3 month job placement next week, would be good to have 8.1 with me mainly for the new search features and better scaling, but hesitant to update in case someting goes wrong.

I installed the update yesterday. I encountered 3 problems, two of which were fixable. First, the gtx 765m was not detected, but this was solved by updating the nvidia driver. The second problem is more of an annoyance. When I play Metro Last Light, I get a 'low ram' warning every 10 minutes or so despite the fact that my ram usage doesn't actually exceed 3gb out of my 8gb. Can't do anything about this yet. Finally, I got that watermark on my desktop saying that secure boot is not properly configured. So I had to restore the factory keys in the bios.

I think I got rid of it by changing how virtual memory was handled by windows.
Can't tell you exactly yet, I'll get my computer back tomorrow.

Ah, it's a mechanical drive then. Apologies, for some reason I thought we were talking about an SSD.

In that case, you won't need any manufacturer specific software, just download GParted and create a bootable USB flash drive ( GParted Live on USB)

You can then boot from the flash drive and format the HDD and hopefully solve the problem. Be sure to format the correct disk.

It's nomral, apparently for optimus/mobile. I asked the same question myself several months back, and discovered shortly afterwards doing a clean install/ssd no change in options... (shield streaming limitation truly sucks as my 8250-s 780m is every bit as capable of streaming as is my desktop 670...)

    Anyways interesting addenda:
    Furmark, 15m testing:
    8250-s 780m(4800mq): ~87C stable
    7330(4800mq): ~65C stable
    Desktop 3930k/EVGA GTX 670 FTW: ~80C stable
MSI GT725(P8600/4850 Radeon HD mobility): ~80C stable

The 7330 is really a standout, as I expected it to spike HIGH and then likely stabilize around 90C, but nope, better than the 8250 with it's own dedicated GPU fan/HS...

I had this problem as well. Go to the bios by mashing F2 during bootup. Then under the security tab, enable secure booting. This will allow you to access the secure boot settings. Under those settings, enable factory codes. Then, you can choose to restore the factory codes.
That's what I did based on help I found on other websites and it seemed to work

Install start8 with it you can disable metro and whatever you don't like in Win8 and make it essential like win7 - I use win8 on my w230st and its awesome, never had a problem with it and its super fast.

    I have some questions:

    1. Which kit 2x8GB of RAM do you recommend to buy separately?

I was thinking about that Crucial:

I can make it operate at 1866 MHz?

    2. What power adapter I can buy?
    This Cooler Master serves?

@RAM: I can't remember where I've read it, but I think this machine *officially* only supports 1600Mhz RAM (I also considered getting 1866, but stepped back from it). In Premas bios mod 1866 can be selected, no idea if it works without problems - but the worst thing that could happen falling back to 1600, resulting in a waste of money but no loss of functionality. What might become a problem is the low voltage, previous clevo laptops were said to have problems with 1.35V RAM - yet I saw no reports about 1.35V RAM not working on this machine (only missed a few pages since the release) - I for myself am running on an 1.35V 8GB 1600Mhz crucial without problems .

@AC: The Clevo one states being 19.5V & 6.15A , that coolermaster thingy also is 19V & 6.35A - Should be fine, assuming the tip fits

Actually, it is supposed to run on low voltage ram.
Don't remember where I saw this, I guess within clevo's specs.

Random SSD disconnects are due to heat issues it seems. I've got an Intel 525 240GB mSATA drive in my w230st and it has randomly disconnected a lot, swapped drive and swapped motherboard on the device but still getting the same issues. Anyone else experiencing this or do I just have the worst luck in the world?

The HDD temperatures seem to reach near 95 celcius and according to Intel the drives are only tested and verified to work up to 70 celcius.

My samsung msata SSD doesn't have a temperature sensor. But the temperature of the air inside the case is at most ~60 degrees (HWMonitor) for mine under Kombustor or Prime95, and I don't ever experience any DCs of my drives (My HDD stays around 50 degrees)

Mhm. HWMonitor shows the Air Flow temperature and when it goes up to ~93 celcius the mSATA drive is disconnected. I've had t his issue with two seperate mSATA drives, both Intel 525. I wonder if getting Samsung or Plextor helps? AFAIK they use the same controller and should get equally hot, maybe there is some other problem with my machine?

So this little laptop seems to be thermally limited from getting to do much more than stock everything on the processor. So I think it is time to step up the mods!

    Two plans of attack:

First I was considering connecting the heat pipes together where they cross over each other. This will help get more heat down to the fins before the processor is getting into the 90s. The GPU will run hotter but even overclocked mine is always no more than 75c. The idea is to use something flexible like copper braid with some heat paste. Might be worth a try.

The other idea was additional active cooling. I was actually rather surprised at how much room exists in this laptop. The idea here is to machine a custom heat sink that connects and mounts to the heat pipe of the processor. A 5v fan will intake air from new slots on the bottom push that cool air across the heat sink and back out of the case. The issue I am running into is getting fairly easy 5v power. I was looking to buying or making a MSATA board that would pull power from the 5v MSATA bus but that is looking to be more involved than I was hoping for. The USB ports from the backside seem fairly buried too, so this hinder my progress in this route.

All and all could be a fun project

I don't ever get airflow temperature even above 60 while gaming in the normal-hot-Singapore-temperature-environment (unless I OC), it may be a problem with your machine.
But really, 93 degrees is insane.
You should get it checked, IMO

Yup. But Metabox told me that Intel 525 is a normal upgraed with their W230st and they have never heard about this overheating issue before. I might have gotten two faulty drives.. Doesn't matter if I burst the fan on max or not.

You say that, but everyone else keeps telling me that my 90c+ degrees (even with a cooling pad and after repasting) is "normal." Also, the fact that I can't undervolt at all without crashing is something I shouldn't worry about. There are clearly some issues that some of us are experiencing.

We are talking airflow on the SSD/mSATA it shouldn't go above 60-65c as far as I know. Intel only tests their drive to work up to 70c.

Not on this board. I don't know "everyone else", but they're simply wrong.
That temp is only normal for cpu under heavy load, everything else should stay under 80°.
The HDD/SSD should stay under 60, 65° max.

I just had a repeat of an issue I was really hoping was a one-time fluke. I was doing some light web browsing, nothing at all demanding, and had about half battery left, when the power just went out. No warning, no blue screen, nothing. I held the power button for a second, the power button and keyboard backlight lit for a second, then nothing. Waited 10 minutes, repeated, nothing. I plugged in and started up, and (after a few pending Windows Updates finished) it said I had 56% battery. I probably had it off-wire for about an hour and a half, so that sounds like a reasonable discharge level.

I've let it charge back up to 70%, and I'm going to run it down and see if it fails again. Does anybody have an idea what might cause this? Could my battery be defective? I want to get it addressed right away if possible but I really don't want to have to send the whole thing in for repair if I can avoid it...

    No idea mate.

Above all, the heat from the cpu mostly goes in the heat-pipe, so it doesn't affect anything around.

    Hello to you all!

After trawling through every page of this forum, reading every review, watching YouTube videos over the last couple of months and seeing the W110er get discontinued (which helped me make my decision) I decided to finally order the W230st.
    .
After comparing prices and level of warranty etc I decided to call round for quotes without a hard drive as I already have an OCZ vertex 4 from my old PC.
Over the last week I have spoken to four uninterested sales people at PCS, scan.co.uk and overclockers (which surprised me as I had heard good things about O/C).
PCS wouldnt remove the hard, neither would overclockers.
I found a voucher on half discount.com for 16% off 3XS systems with scan.co.uk so called them. This voucher is a fake and scan.co.uk will not offer this, can't say I'm hardly surprised.
They did offer a quotation for no hard drive, but after two calls, I still have no quote from them in my emails or by phone!
I had read on here some of your praise for MySN and their XMG systems and although they still offer the W110, for a little more money, you get a lot of power with the W230.
I had a hunt around and found that MYSN offer 2.5% cash back when you go through and purchase via Quidco
Mysn.co.uk Voucher Codes, Cashback & Discount Codes | Quidco
As I wanted no hard drive I called them today and spoke to Andrew, possibly the most helpful gentleman and deserves a pay rise.
He did a quote within 10 minutes, applied the discount manually, added free shipping for being a NBR member and got me the following for £730.

    i7 4700MQ
    4gb RAM
    Intel AC 7260
    No HDD/OS

Doesn't seem much, but when you take into consideration MySN offer 2year collect and return warranty on parts and labour with Their LCD pixel warranty, it makes it a pretty good deal.
And if their aftercare is as good as the service I got today, then happy days.

Can't wait to get it and start playing....

Big Thankyou to regular posters on here for all your advice and tips, especially HT wing nut, Prema, Meaker and so many of you to mention you all.

    Hey guys,
I ordered my laptop last week. I'm planning to customize the look by myself. I was wondering what would be a preferable size for sleeves and Laptop skin size.

I was interested in this: Arsenal Neoprene Laptop Sleeve | eBay

However, I'm not sure if a 15" would be too big for the laptop. Any help is appreciated.

8.1 has been fine for me, there did appear to be some issue with the scaling not adjusting so the font was fuzzy. However changing the scaling manually in the display settings sorted that easy enough. Havent tried airplane mode however I have the feeling that it still wont work!

A 15 inch sleeve is likely to be too big, I would have a look for 13-14" ones.

i new in this forum and my clevo w230st arrived just now. and i did clean install of the OS Windows 8 and upgraded to 8.1, i have several issues:

    1. airplane HID mode driver in the device manager not installed properly
    2. bluetooth peripheral device in the device manager not installed properly
    3. and shutdown/restart problem, it took long enough about 30 - 45 second.

although i have not check the hotkeys in the notebook keyboard, and if there is others problem, but these 3 is the current issues i have now.

is this normal or there is something i missed ?

i am new in the notebook area, and hoping that i could get advise and opinion from members of this forum :)

    regards,

the 1st one is quite normal, airplane mode doesn't work under 8.1 for now.
anyhow, mine doesn't show up as "not correctly installed" anymore (but still does not work)

for the 2nd one you need to install drivers, depending on what is your bluetooth model.

for the 3rd you may want to look at windows logs to see what's preventing it to stop right there.

So I take it that windows 8 is still better on this till 8.1 gets proper support from Clevo, hope that happens soon, I try to run all my systems on the same OS, and I would like to get this laptop on board with that.

Hey guys, did anyone order a W230ST w/ the new i5-4200M 37watt dual core haswell? I was wondering if this will solve all of the high 90-99c temps and throttling horror issue that several owners are suffering. Will the i5-4200M solve the high temps/throttling w/o undervolting or using stupid props that you are not suppose to anyway for it to function normally.

Did it also improve battery life since when I had the w230st back in late July w/ the 4700mq, the best i could get was 3-3.5hours and that's at 30% brigrhtness and only web surfing.

    Let me know
