Quite worth it. Not as much as if you come from a traditional HDD, but still.

Would getting a 4702mq fix the random tornado fan noise? I don't want my laptop to be making a ruckus during class. I don't mind it while gaming though.

That's worrying, the burst is still occasional while doing stuff like youtube or surfing chrome? I'm absoutely ok with the fan noise while gaming.

it seems to happen totally randomly, actually now that i have had the laptop for over a week i dont even notice it really so i couldnt even tell you if it happens during basic use. Temp wise my laptop never reaches above 80 degrees. Battery life is like 3 hours which isnt bad. I have only done one battery test so far though and that was today... lol

Quiet mode seems to keep it quiet for most. But unless you're in a small room close to others you won't notice it anyhow.

Well I'm going to be in a classroom, and some of my classes are only 15 people big. I'm just worried about the noise. But personally I haven't actually heard the fan noise myself, I've only heard about how bad it is. Is it really THAT bad/loud?

no not that bad, it's usually not long nor strong (at least with latest bios), with some exceptions maybe.
and it doesn't seem to be related to heat, rather to load, thus I don't think 4702mq would make any difference.

Mysn released a custom EC, which got rid of the bursting part.

I wouldn't randomly flash another vendor's EC. It can brick your system. Soon enough I'm sure there will be an official Clevo and Sager release. Obviously if you have an MySN machine go for it.

'till now Clevo seemed to release one bios a month, so you may be right, maybe the next one is around the corner...
No warranty it will fix the annoying issues though.
Mine is not back yet anyway.. PCS takes aaaages to process their orders & RMAs :(

The only downside is, that the EC is modified version of EC 04. So most of you guys will already run on the newer version.
It can be found here. Read the warning note though. I hate to admit it, but HTWingNut's right. ;) There might be a risk. But I guess there always is, when flashing a new BIOS/EC

    He everybody,

new user here. I decided to buy this laptop because of the information i got here, awesome community.
still, after reading about 50/60ish pages in this thread, I would like to ask some questions in order to make this new laptop more awesome than it already is (it is, awesome.)

    1) How do I acces ''silent mode'' in order to not let the fans burst?
    2) 60 degrees celsius acceptable for idle temps?
    3) How do I undervolt/underclock the cpu/gpu in order to get more reasonable temps?

    Cheers people, love from Amsterdam

1- Clevo control center, try Fn + Esc
    2- Yes
3- Install XTU & nVidia inspector

Wow thanks for the fast response!

Actually the only thing thats really bothering me are the mouse buttons underneath the touchpad... Would have wished that they had remove those buttons and made the touchpad bigger... anybody else who doesnt like them? They're squeecky and not so solid...

Here's what Prema told me about it :

"That's an old release candidate beta EC, the v5 EC values originated from it like a week later.."

So it would seem like it's the same as .05 EC fan-wise, too bad since it doesn't look to solve the issue for me =)

Just pulled the trigger on this bad boy today and have a couple questions:

    1. Should I have spent the extra $75 on the I7 4700qm over the I5 4200m? I'm already spending over my budget though $75 isn't a huge difference, however I'm not sure I will see much real world difference between the two. I need the laptop for gaming (mostly I phase between MMOs, recently Rift and SWtOR) and normal use. I don't often run many apps at once so I'm not sure I need the extra cores. Plus maybe I'll see better temps and battery with the I5? I'm all about bang for the buck.

    2. I went with the stock HDD for now but I plan to add an SSD at a later date to at least install Windows on. I'm not entirely sure what raid is but my understanding is you can use identical drives in conjunction for better speeds yes? I doubt I would want to shell out the cash for that and I would probably be happy with a single SSD and the stock HDD. Would a small SSD for my Windows install be sufficient or should I get a larger one to install games to it as well? Again I'm all about bang for the buck.

    3. I read some mention of Bios updates, what improvements have been made? Is or will Optimus be supported?

    4. How long from the day I order can I expect my rig to be delivered? I ordered from Xotic PC with the stock configuration and standard shipping.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. You want the i7 instead. The i5 is only dual core, now most games don't use all cores to my understanding but other applications running in the background might. Also you will get better clock speeds on the i7 which is important in cpu intensive gaming. Check out a comparison at cpu boss: Intel Core i7 4700MQ vs i5 4200M I went with i7-4900MQ which was a tiny bit overkill but it totally rocks.

    2. Get an SSD, don't bother with RAID. You'll notice a huge difference compared to a mechanical disk, get one that is at least 120GB so you can install Windows and maybe one or two large games on it. I got the 512GB SSD and I have about 60GB left after installing some games, syncing skydrive and my developer tools installed.

    3. It comes with Optimus. If you just ordered it, it should have the latest CPU.

    4. Delivery times varies a lot. It took about 2 weeks, if not a little more before I got mine. That includes building and shipping. Don't expect to get it faster than 2 weeks.

yes I have it enabled. The lack of 'fast boot' in BIOS seems to be the problem. A bios mod would solve it!

I agree. And get the quad core if you're a big gamer. More newer games are requiring quad core or perform much better with quad core. The new Watch Dogs game requires a quad core: http://www.vg247.com/2013/10/08/watch-dogs-revised-pc-requirements-call-for-6gb-of-ram/

    ;) Incoming soon. ;)

P.S. **DON'T** bug Prema if you want it released in a reasonable time frame.

Did someone of you got the issue that the psu shuts off caused by heat?
Had the problem while gaming about an hour - the psu shuts off about 3 minutes.

After repasting and undervolting my 4700 (-123mV) and gpu - my cpu and gpu are always in turbo mode - 3.3Ghz and 901,5Mhz
Could this be the reason why my psu is overheating?

My psu lays on a wooden floor.

Is it possible to use a psu with approx. 140W?

    Thx - Quas

What PSU do you have, I think that there are a couple of models being used.

Some suppliers had different PSU's based on different spec's ie the dual core CPU's could use a lower wattage PSU to the quad core cpus etc.

So today is my second day of using the Clevo W230ST. I must say, I am impressed.
What happened today was pretty funny, I accidentitly pressed FN + 1 , which results in the fan spinning 100% !!!
Took me a while to figure out what made the fan spin perminently....

    So i know:

    FN+1 = fan burst
FN + esc = clevo control center
    FN + F1 / F12 = all kind of things

    are there any other combinations?

Othere than FN + 1 and FN + esc all the FN combos are the keys in blue. I guess the only exception are the blue numlock keys. You've gotta turn on numlock with FN - Ins for those to work.

Prema brought to my attention that you can run Intel GPU at full speed (or faster) ON BATTERY if you turn off Clevo Control Center (i.e. Hotkey.exe). Just remove it from the start menu and reboot, then iGPU clocks will work at full speed.

You can also use Intel XTU (or his soon to be released BIOS) to adjust the clock speed too. Don't scoff at the Intel HD 4600 either as it is a very capable 720p GPU to be used in a pinch. You can also OC and OV the HD 4600, for even better performance. The iGPU will use considerably less power than the 765m. This means you will be able to game while on battery and for quite a long period. I will be sure to do some testing and share.

Not that bad. There should be a readme with it. Basically you make a bootable MSDOS flash drive using some tools, boot into it and run some scripts to flash the BIOS.

    Hi all,

I haven't been around since the original postings on this laptop but my W230ST died on me about a month ago when I plugged an external Bluray drive into the USB 3 port (shut off, that was all she wrote.) My reseller replaced the motherboard in the laptop and that fixed the issue but unfortunately they forgot to hook up the left speaker and I am only getting sound out of the right one. Does anyone know where the speaker hookups are inside this laptop? I am really hoping I can just pop the keyboard out or the bottom panel to get to it without having to remove the motherboard.

If anyone can help I'd appreciate it so I don't have to spend $40 to ship this thing back off for another 3 weeks.

When you open the bottom cover it is the white connector between the heatpipes and the fan...I think it's for both speakers though...

    Evening Prema,

You beat me to it (was on my way back to edit my post) but you are correct in the location, there is a white header on each side of the laptop and the left-most one was only halfway pushed in. Each speaker has their own connector in case anyone ever runs into this.

    Thanks for the help!

holy sh!t the Bios Mod is out, and no 765m OC limit. I'm gonna fry my laptop tonight :D :D Thanks Prema! Will donate by tonight

Edit: Flashed successfully, the bios time has definitely reduced. Just tried OC the GPU to +160 (+170 crashes), got an instant 100 point boost in 3DMark, gaming results coming in a bit :D. Great work, donated :).

I can't seem to OV with AfterBurner though, is this card voltage locked?

Use nVidia Inspector. I'm able to get +350 on the core with max OV (+331.5mv) and a 3DMark 11 score of 5500. :p

And +160 with stock voltage is actually great. I can only get about +130, anything above that is unstable in many situations.

So how is the keyboard and the touchpad? My sager np8130 has an infuriating touchpad that moves the cursor and text cursor around when I'm trying to type, usually in a word document. Has anyone experienced that with the 230st?

Hey guys, i know probably a noob question but i am having trouble updating my bios with premas mod, i have made my usb stick bootable using rufus and extracted the mod files to the usb stick and when i reboot to usb the curser just flashes but i cant type anything on the screen like update.bat, it just stays on the flashing curser, is there an easier way to do this, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Silly question, But how do we get to the bios screen? I've smashed the usual keys at the Sager logo, but nothing happens.

On another note, I freeze when I try to shutdown or reboot. I freeze at startup. Happens often but not always. Using Win 8 FYI.
